He married Martha (really need her maiden name) who was b. 4 December 1842 in VA. On some Census Records it states that Williams father was born in TN and his mother in VA. William and Martha had the following children: Susan Alice French b. 1861 in VA, m. Robert O. Braley 3 Dec 1879 in Cabell Co., WV Hannah Ella French b. June 1865 in WV, m. James LaFayette Jones in Ripley, TN 18 May 1884, married 2 others after this. Lemuel W. French b. Jan 1866 in Cabell Co., WV, m. Elizabeth Strickland in Lake City, AR on 19 Feb 1890. Blankenship 12 June 1910 in Craighead co., AR I have marriage records for most of these, and some other records, to share if anyone else is researching this family. Dorothy dmccarns@bscn.com

    3. Hello, I have a John C. French born in Maryland abt 1805 married Ann Nancy Baker. Their children were: John French born 1838 William French born 1842 Ellen French born 1845 Sarah Sudia French 1848 John C. French shows up in the 1850 Census in Montgomery County KY. There also was a William that showed up about the same time, also born in Maryland. I believe that they might be brothers. I have been stumped on finding any information about John or his parents. Does anybody have any information on this line? Thank you, Scott Haggard

Dot, others I have told me about John being from MD, but I have nothing to prove it. Nor can I prove that the John French in NOrthumberland and Westmoreland records is ours. Can you? What lends credence to MD story is 1850 census for the younger Matthew French in Tazewell County. His mother and sister give MD as birthplace, but his is VA and he's older than his sister. Now if we only knew if/how Matthew the younger is related to Matthew of Giles. Anyone?

    3. John, I've been told that "my" Pole's brother's H. was for Henderson, but have not personally seen any documentation on that. Hendersons were in Giles/Mercer area too, with many men having earlier served under James or John in militia/military groups of 1700's. Also, these families were big on initials and for use of the second rather than first given names, even the women. My great great grandmother Eliza Jane French Smith was head of household in 1880 Census. She lists herself as EJ Smith, occupation farming. An aunt's name remains a mystery to this day, as even the newspaper notice of her death refers to her only as M.H. wife of Allen Smith. Brothers Napoleon and William H. were pitted against one another in the election of Mercer County's delegate to Secession Convention. Pole won, voted NO on first round, then for postponement and finally YES. There were a number of later Napoleons in Mercer WV area. Also Tazewell and Giles would be good pickin's in your search for yours. Good hunting! Jackie

    3. Jaculene: MMMmmm. Maybe and maybe not. None of the names you list below are familiar with the exception of Napoleon (Pole) French. But remember, I don't know anything about him, other than the fact that he was my GG grandfather. Napoleon (Pole) French was born about 1845 and is buried in Rock Holds, Kentucky. Charlotte Cress b. Oct 15, 1849 in Wise County Virginia, died 1-14-1942 and was a common law wife to Napoleon French. Napoleon and Charlotte Cress had these children: James R, William J, Margaret, Perry, Barbara Ellen, Elvina, Sallie, Sarah, Martha, Sullie, Elliot and possibly one or two more. I do however recall hearing my Grandmother Anna Sherman speaking of a man she called "W H". I see that according to your post, Napoleon had a brother named William H. French. (Could this be who my Grandmother was referring to by W H ?) I believe this man's name was William Henry. I don't know if the "henry" is a middle name or last name, but somewhere deep down inside, I think "henry" was a middle name just from the context Granny Sherman used to use it. W H this and W H that, but this was 25 years ago if not more. Know what I mean? -----Original Message----- From: Jaculene Masters <datamine@earthlink.net> To: FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com <FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, April 06, 2000 2:45 PM Subject: Re: [FRENCH-L] Napoleon French >John, that brick wall MAY be coming down.
