    3. Hi, I have a Nelson W. FRENCH, that married Lydia STYLES. They had 3 children Elmer (b. 1887), Herbert (b. 1889) and Hattie FRENCH. I have no information on birth place for Nelson, but the children were all born in VT. I don't know if this helps, but thought I'd throw it out there. Good Luck. 1. Re: [FRENCH-L] J. C. French
    2. Jocelyn, John C. French went to Alexander University. I'm not sure where that is located. He then went to a business school in Cleveland, Ohio - it was just listed as a "Spencerian College". "John taught school for several years over a wide area", (that would be in Roulette, Potter Co., PA). In 1885, John operated a general store for three years at Larabee, PA with his half-brother Joe Samson. John then owned his own business - the Olean Hardwood Company, from 1888 until 1893, when he sold the company to BH Parkhurst. That was in Olean, Cattaraugus Co., NY. When his health failed he put a stop to his business career and retired to his old homestead in Roulette. During the last years of his life he was unable to walk and at this time became a local historian and voluminous writer. He was noted for his remarkable memory of past events and was constantly writing for local papers and had a weekly column in the Altoona Tribune. He collaborated with Henry W. Shoemaker in the preservation and publication of a large collection of native folk songs and hunting stories. He was the author of several books - two are "Rafting Days in Pennsylvania and The Passenger Pigeon in Pennsylvania. Jocelyn, most of the above came from the book "History of Roulette, PA by Robert C. Lyman, Sr. According to family stories, there was still extended family in NY, I have always assumed that was in Chemung, Tioga, Steuben and probably Cattaurugus Cos., NY. I do know that John's in laws were in Buffalo, Erie County, NY. I can remember as a child, visiting family in New York State, but for the life of me I don't know who those Frenchs were or where they were. Wherever it was, it wasn't more than a couple of hours away from Buffalo. There is a French Hill Cemetery in Cameron, Steuben Co., NY and another French Hill Cemetery in Middlebury, Tioga Co., PA. My grandfather's sister - Rosemary Willis French married a minister by the name of Irvin Edward Deer. Aunt Rose was the genealogist of the family. One of Irvin's nephews - or I guess I should say great nephew - has been researching his family and has an Ebenezer French in his family. I will write to him with your permission and see if it is the same Ebenezer French. His name is Phillip Deere. Take care. Marion Scherer

    3. Marion, Just read your post about J.C. FRENCH. My little FRENCH family starts with Ebenezer FRENCH b. 1808 - d.1876 in Monroe County, NY. Now, bear with me! Ebenezer FRENCH's daughter, Delia FRENCH married James N. HUBBARD. Their son, George Marquis HUBBARD married Sarah Jane THOMPSON. They all remained in Monroe County, NY. Sarah Jane THOMPSON' father was William A. THOMPSON b. 1834 - d. 1919. William attended Antioch College in Ohio. His "diploma" was signed by Horace Mann, the instigator of our public school system. William A. THOMPSON's father was Reverand Johnathan S. THOMPSON who was also very involved with Horace Mann. Finally, to get to the point! What school in Ohio did J. C. FRENCH attend? If it was Antioch, there is a good chance that our FRENCHs are related. My group of FRENCH, THOMPSON, HUBBARD stuck together in Monroe County, NY, but there don't appear to be any of their sibblings there. I realize this is a long shot, but that's what makes it so interesting! Thanks for reading, Jocelyn Hubbard, Gaithersburg, MD

    2. My heart skipped a beat when I read the subject line with J.C. French! My great grandfather was John Churchill French, however he was born in McKean Co., PA in 1856 and lived most of his life in Roulette, Potter Co., PA. I have been wondering though about those Frenchs in Ohio (as well as other places), as my great grandfather went to college in Ohio. I have no idea whether he lived in a "dorm" or if he lived with family. John's father was Nehemiah French, b. 1818 in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY, m. Olive Churchill, widow of unk. Samson, d. 1906 in Roulette, Potter Co., PA. Does any of this sound familiar at all? Thank you for your time. Marion Scherer

    3. I am sorry about that double message, having problems figuring out about this HTML thing. Marion, those names don't sound familiar but the father-in-law of Susan Beatrice French who married Bernard Edward England, Abraham England, was born in Bedford, Penn.. You know how all those guys traveled together, so they might be connected somehow.
