    3. Hugh I would be interested to learn of the work you mentioned concerning a Thomas French coming from England abt 1660. I would appreciate knowing the name of the person with that information so I can compare my genealogy to it. Bill French Houston TX

    2. Barbara, I know of two FRENCH lines in NJ. The oldest is that of Thomas FRENCH who came from England c1660. There is a two volume work on this Thomas which carries the line for a number of generations. See "Descendant of Thomas FRENCH", The author was a FRENCH. I'm away from my data at the moment, but will send more references when I get a chance. The other FRENCH line came to NJ from NE/NY. I have not worked this family as it was found not to relate to my line. I'm sure you will get a response from someone on the FRENCH-L. They are a very helpful bunch. Best regards, Hugh

    1. [FRENCH-L] French family in NJ?
    2. Does anyone know of a FRENCH family in NJ. On the ss application of my half Uncle Henry his mother is listed as Sara French. This is the first time the surname French has appeared. Henry was born in Warrenville NJ in 1894. His father's name was Valentine SWODY. He had at least three brothers: William born 1868 in Whitehouse NJ; Frank born 1892 in Coontown NJ: and Peter born 1895 in North Plainfield Township NJ. I am mystified. Barbara of Baltimore

    3. No, I don't believe I am related to the Frenchs from VA. Actually I don't go very far back with my French family. I am still trying to find my French roots in Indiana. My GGrandfather was Thomas French, (B ~1857 in Rising Sun, Indiana), married Nancy A. Graves ( B. 5 July 1854, North Vernon, Indiana), Feb 21, 1878. They had four children, Walter, Ralph, Edward (my grandfather), and Leora. Thomas and Nancy lived in Aurora, Indiana and are buried in Riverview Cemetary there. Anybody out there who might have some connections to this branch of the French tree?? I would love to hear from you. Richard Day

    2. Hugh, Marsha Hoffman Rising, CG FASG Is doing a study of the first 1000 applicants for land in MO. The goal is to determine where they migrated from. I think she has completed well over 700 of the names. She has a Lafford French in the pool of applicants. If you go to the Board for Certification web site you can find her address listed in the directory. How I know this is she placed an ad in Genealogy Helper about 10 years ago and I asked her about this at a conference. Margaret

    2. All, The family of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH included Lafford, William, Joseph, Simon and Sarah (m. Hugh MOORE). I am in search of the wife of William, brother to Lafford William allegedly departed SC about 1795 and went initially to KY with his brother, Simon, and, perhaps, his brother, Joseph. It is suggested that Lafford initially went to KY, but returned to SC. William may have owned land in Warren Co., KY. Simon settled in Christian Co., KY and stayed there. Wm. moved to White Co., TN about 1803 and died there in 1808. His daughter, Jane, m. John DENTON in KY (?) and moved with William to White Co., TN. By 1812 (Tax List) John DENTON is found in Warren Co., TN. By 1829 John DENTON and family were in Washington Co., AR. There is one account that said William FRENCH died before leaving SC and his widow went to Warren Co., TN. This has not been substantiated, but, if true, the William FRENCH tracked above is someone else. There are substantial records to establish that William FRENCH was married with family in SC. (USC 1790 Pendleton Distr). William lived very near the NC border with SC. I could find no marriage record in SC or NC. I would like to correspond with anyone researching this FRENCH family. Best regards, Hugh

    2. All, I apologize to the List membership. I am the one who threw the fat into the fire by questioning a part of the data presented regarding Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH through the FRENCH-L when I was addressing a specific individual. The better procedure would be to privately (non-list) question the data and then send the List the result. Personal criticism should be done PRIVATELY. Early in my life I was taught to praise in public and chastise in private. Its a good rule. 'Nough said. Over and out. Best regards, Hugh
