We MUST have some relations in common. I have a great deal of information on FRENCH family from Essex, although I do not have the particular first name you mentioned. A good part of my grandmother's family was born/lived/died on Foulness Island. Their main name is BELTON....some still live there actually. Southend-On-Sea was the birthplace of my own father....William Alfred CRANMER, bor 16 Sep 1893. Would you tell me if you have any of these names in your records?......it seems a great co-incidence that I should find this note after all this time..smile. 3. I have a John FRENCH from MD that did move into KY. Nelson and Hardin Counties. It is quite possible that we are cousins somewhere along the line too. Do you have any more info on your John? I know my William had both sons and brother named John. William was born sometime after 1765, married Mary Boone. Is there any connection between the three families? 1. [FRENCH-L] Re:MD & Tazewell Frenches and a dingaling
    2. Jaculene G. Masters
    3. Recent messages rang no bells, but there was a bit of tingaling--just a bit that sent me back to some 20 year old notes when I first began to trace my gg grandmother Eliza Jane French Smith of Mercer. I wasn't sure who her father was and also took notes on the Tazewell Mathew French. I'll try to translate them here in hopes that something may help someone. My sources were: LDS fiche, Tazewell County local history, Tazewell death records and 1850 Tazewell census. Mathew died twice. Finding two death records for the same man is what saved this info from falling into the blackhole which nibbles at my memory. I noted the facts given but NOT the source, at least one came from a local history title and author unknown now. I really didn't think these were my Frenches--that's my lame excuse. The notes with my current comments in brackets[]: Mathew son of Catherine OR Elizabeth and John C. OR John G. died in Tazewell Dec. 1859 athe age of 63 OR 69. However, Tazewell 1850 census says Mathew is 50 and born in VA, making him 59 or 60 in Dec 1859. Sister Elizabeth is listed as informant. How many Mathews do we have here?[I still don't know.] Julia French Alison d. 1859, age 42. b.1817, no source. Census lists a Julia A FRENCH, 35, b. in MD living in Mathew's household. Was she really Julia Alison? Elizabeth French d. 1859, age 83 (1776) was a death record, BUT cencus lists two Elizabeths in Mathew's household: Elizabeth, 40, b. MD and Elizabeth, 89, also born in MD. Was the elder the same Elizabeth who died in 1859 when she was 98? The rest of Mathew's household Tazewell 1850 Albert 14 [my gggrandmother named her first child Isaac Albert in 1849] Letitia 12 Darcus 11 Laura Jane 9 Amanda 7 [my gggrandfather's sister was Amanda. she married Jehu French.] Martha 7 Nicati (?hard to read) 5 Female Angelica 3 Sally 1 Isaac Johnson French18 farmer Other French heads of households in 1850 Tazewell with my notes as to their possible connections: 233 Austin --son of John 264 Catherine--Zeke 233 Jeremiah--son of Reuben? he's 29, farmer in Austin's household 234 John N. 216 Letitia--error 242 Louisa Hope this helps someone! 1. [FRENCH-L] Sally French
    2. Dean Burgess
    3. I am looking for the ancestors of Sally French, born 4 March 1776 and married Gideon Burgess in Herkimer, or Otsego County, NY, or Plainfileld, CT. She died in Winfield (or West Winfield), Herkimer County, New York 10 Feb. 1844 and is buried there. In her daughter's autograph book several Frenchs have added poems, one calling her "cousin." They are: Delight French of Plainfield, CT, on 17 August 1841; John French, Plainfield, 4 Sept 1841; Henry French, Plainfield, 18 August 1841 and Sarah French, Plainfield, 2 Sept. 1841. It is also signed by two Burgesses, both in Richfield Springs, Otsego County, NY, one of them being Gideon and Sally's son Dean Burgess. I am descended from their son Alfred Burgess of Winfield, Herkimer County, NY. One source says Gideon Burgess' father, John Burgess, and mother Urania (Mowrey) Burgess moved to New York state from Plainfield, CT. This branch of the Burgess family lived many generations in RI, as did the Mowreys, but John Burgess' father John and his wife were buried at Sterling, CT. In the Plainfield, CT, records office I found a Delight French, the daughter of Hezekiah French and his wife Olive who was born 11 April 1824. This is probably the cousin from the autograph book. I also found a Henry French born there 6 Nov. 1818 and a Sarah French who marries Johnathan Baker of Brooklyn 15 January 1848. If anyone has any of these lines please share them, as there is probably a connection. In the IGI there are three Sally Frenchs born in Mass. in March 1776, the daughter of Joseph French and his wife Ruth, of Templeton, one in Chelmsford and one in Marlboro - all born on 9 July 1776. If anyone knows who any of these married it would at least allow me to eliminate them. A cousin of mine in 1987 contacted a Naomi French Burton who lived in Richfield Springs, Otsego County, NY, but felt this was not the same French line. However, if she is on this list I would not mind comparing family lines with her again. Dean Burgess (reply through the French family list, or directly to me at redlion3@juno.com if you prefer)
