Marion, thank you. I think we once visited about him and you had mentioned the part about the college. My J. C. could have used his full name somewhere and that would have helped. I see I have to do alot more checking to find them. Tommie, John C. French, my great grandfather, was born in 1856 in Port Allegheny, McKean County, PA. He was raised in Roulette, Potter County, PA and married Effie Deans Donshea. John attended college in Ohio, but other than that, resided only in PA and for a brief while in the souther tier of New York state. Good luck with your research. Marion Scherer
Frances, I believe that the library in Coudersport, Potter Co., PA has some of the books, which ones, I don't remember. Also, the Free Library in Philadelphia has a couple of different titles from what I understand. I haven't made copies of the books myself. The books that John C. French wrote and collaborated on, regarded folklore, songs, customs, wildlife and the lumber industry. What makes them so fascinating are the little side notes and articles about the people. Thus, my post regarding the Lyman family. Marion Scherer

Marion et al, Your message: "I have recently received a photocopy of another of the books that my great grandfather, John C. French authored and have come across some information regarding the Lyman family. Would the researcher of the French-Lyman family please contact me if interested in the information." I am very interested in your message. We have corresponded before about the FRENCHs, but were not able to make a connection at that time. I have a Lyman FRENCH who died in 1883 in Monroe County, New York. He was the son of Marquis H. FRENCH 1843-1924 and Huldah E. HINCKLEY [1852-1925]. Both Marquis [also called Marcus] and Huldah died in Monroe County, New York. I would be very interested in any LYMAN/FRENCH connection that might shed some light on this family. Thanks in advance, Jocelyn Hubbard, Gaithersburg, MD johubbard@erols.com
I have recently received a photocopy of another of the books that my great grandfather, John C. French authored and have come across some information regarding the Lyman family. Would the researcher of the French-Lyman family please contact me if interested in the information. Marion Scherer

I currently have one of a little girl, appoximately age 2. I estimate the photograph to have been taken in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Handwritten on the cardboard holder are the names: Annette French, daughter of Albert and Elvira French, mother's niece. I was wondering if this may be a photo of someone in your family. I found your French-Wood Genealogy website using the Excite.com search engine. Thank you. Penny Ward >>

Hello, I have just joined the list. I am searching for information on my grandfather, John Russell FRENCH.His wife Alice (MILLER) died about 1900. He placed the children in the MOORMAN Orphange in Wayne county, Indiana. I have been told that he was a circuit riding minister. His birth date was 1859. Some stories say that he died soon after his wife but others say that he moved to another county in Indiana, married and raised another family.Any help or leads appreciated. Frances
Hello, I have the basic lineage of my third great grandfather James FRENCH born May 9, 1812 in South Hampton NH to Benjamin FRENCH and Ruth COLE. I would very much like to find out the names of his siblings. James married Betsy TUCKER--at some point around 1851 the family was at least partially broken up. I have Betsy's family but would like to see where James' siblings lived and if some of my line lived nearby. I see in the IGI an Amos FRENCH from South Hampton born to a Benjamin FRENCH and Ruth--is he a sibling? There is a Moses FRENCH born 1806 to a Benjamin FRENCH and Ruth DOLE--could this be an error--is this really Ruth COLE? On a side note--If anyone is willing to copy Chart 4.2 for me please email me privately--I have not been able to get any response from the person in the FFA who has this chart. I am not being critical, we all have other lives but I would really like to have this resource. I would be happy to pay all expenses--I know it runs many pages. Thank you. Kathy Karn
Wish I could be of help, but this Polly rings no bells for me. Hope someone else will connect. Good hunting, JGM
This sounds like my Frenches who also settled in California around that same time. Maybe we have a French connection. Some names are Noah, William, John, etc. Email me privately if you wish.
