    3. Ok, I am going to try to do this. I hope it makes sense to everyone. I got it off my animap. 1791- Herkimer, Otsego, Tioga formed from Montgomery County, NY. 1791- Otsego (OT) Founded: 1791 County Seat: Cooperstown Location: Central 1794- Onondaga from Herkimer, Tioga 1795- Schohalie from Albany, Otsego 1796- Steuben from Ontario 1797- Delaware from Ulster, Otsego, Montgomery gained from Herkimer 1798- Chenango From Herkimer, Tioga Oneida from Herkimer 1799- Cayuga from Onondaga 1800- Greene from Ulster, Albany 1816- Herkimer gained from Otsego. 1817- Delaware gained from Otsego. Herkimer gained from Montgomery 1822- Otsego gained from Delaware Apparently Otsego stayed the same from 1822 until at least 1915. There were other changes in the state but I was only looking for the area around Otsego County, NY. I forgot the years you were looking for so I hope this helps you to figure out what other counties might have your family records. If I can help anymore please let me know. 2. Hi, I'm also interested in the FRENCH family from Cherry Valley and Otsego County. Have not found anything to connect my family. My particular FRENCH is Temperance b. 1767 and Ann b. 1774 , believe to be sisters, both girls married BUNN's. Believe their father is Ebenezer and mother Abigail Goodspeed? but not sure of these facts. Any help would be appreciated Judy Also researching from same area WELLER, BUNN, WOODHULL, HULSER, WILLSE(WILSEY), ORENDORF, BASTIAN, VOORHEES

    3. to Gail Rogers Yes, I know of the Wilders in Bristol, Ontario County, for whom Wilder Creek was named. My great-great-grandfather, William Gooding, writes fondly of playing on the banks of Wilders Creek as a child, and of the school there in the first decade of the 19th century. I also have a sketch map of the creek (I think it was in the family papers) which indicates the Wilder's property. I am particularly interested to hear about the French family, however, in Otsego County. Gideon Burgess, who married the Sally French I am looking for, kept a tavern on the old Cherry Valley Turnpike (then called the Burgess Tavern, but later the Angel Tavern, which burned down in the 1960s), across from the Burgess farm between Winfield, Herkimer County, and Richfield Springs, Otsego County. All of that family are buried there (I have visited their graves) and old John Burgess (Gideon's father) had his will probate by Gideon in Cooperstown. Since you have found Frenchs in Otsego County, that may be where Gideon Burgess and Sally French met after all. If so the autograph book ties the Otsego County French family to Plainfield in Connecticut. It also means I should be looking in Otsego County for them. What detail do you know about the French family in Otsego County? Is there a good source for that family there? DEAN

    3. Yes that area is beautiful. I was born and raised in Cananandaigua and have relatives there. I am well rooted in that area. My ancestors had large families and although many moved west, many remained in the area. I am just now learning of many aunts, uncles and cousins that I didn't know about. I am familiar with the Goodings as I am related to the Wilders in Bristol and South Bristol and, I believe, they married into the Wilder family. My great great great grandfather Joseph French was born 1803 in Otsego County and moved his family to Ontario County. From what I can gather Joseph's father was named James, b. 1776/77, and according to the 1850 Naples NY census was born in MA and his wife Sarah, b. 1773 was from NH. That is all I know of the early French line. So far I can't connect them with any of the New England Frenches. There are strong French family lines in Otsego County NY, but can't connect them there either. Bummer!!! In case you don't know of these sites, here are a couple of good resources for Ontario County NY and the surrounding area: http://raims.com/home.html http://www.townofbristol.org/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyontari/ Gail At 10:44 AM 8/11/00 -0400, you wrote: >I am looking for a French ancestor, as you are (Sally French born in >Eastern Connecticut in 1776 - still no replies on this list, >unfortunately), but that is not why I am replying. 3. I am looking for a French ancestor, as you are (Sally French born in Eastern Connecticut in 1776 - still no replies on this list, unfortunately), but that is not why I am replying. I noticed your mention of Naples in Ontario County, New York, as the home of the French you were searching. Another line I have traced (the Goodings) lived in Bristol, Ontario County, and I visited the place. There is an excellent historical library in Canandaigua (which is the county seat) covering all the small towns in the county. If you are ever traveling in western New York (and it is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled parts of the country - well worth a trip) I am sure you will find something on your French ancestor in that very interesting collection. 2. Boy, I think you've hit paydirt!!! I'm still trying to connect my French line to the Lyman line, but so far have not been able to do so. However, another lady just responded to my posting to the list that descends from the same family that you do. If you don't mind, I would like to forward your email on to her. Please advise. Also, below is the response that I sent her regarding the Lyman family. From the book "The Passenger Pigeon of Pennsylvania" It's Remarkable History, Habits and Extinction, with Interesting Side Lights on the Folk and Forest Lore of the Alleghenian Region of the old Keystone State, by John C. French, Roulette, Potter County, Pa, with chapters by Samuel N. Rhoads, Dr. B.H. Warren, Henry W. Shoemaker, Charles H. Eldon, James V. Bennett, John H. Chatham and others. Chapter XXVI Biographical Data of Otis J.P. Lyman, A pioneer of Potter County, Pennsylvania, with Story of Taking Pigeons for New York Markets. Otis Jacob Palmer Lyman was born in the township of Roulette, Potter County, Pennsylvania, November 6, 1836, and has resided in that vicinity all his life. He was married, in 1860 to Rosella Sherwood, daughter of Stephen Sherwood of the same place, and raised a large family. He was the eleventh of twelve children born to John Lyman and his wife, Lucretia Palmer. His younger brother, Almeron N. Lyman, served in the Civil War, and died in Virginia, April 16, 1864. In the Lyman family, in the United States, Otis J.P. is the eighth generation, beginning with Richard Lyman who resided at Charleston, Mass. 1631-1635, and later at Hartford, conn. Tracing backward, he was preceded by John, 7; Major Isaac, 6, who came to Potter County in 1804; Benjamin, 5; Isaac, 4; Richard, 3; Richard, 2; Richard, 1; according to the chart prepared by Miss Julia E. Lyman of Harford Conn., finished in 1870, after years of patient investigation of family records and traditions. The story about the pigeons comes after this. There are a couple of other little stories about John as well. Major Isaac Lyman I know served in the Revolutionary War, I probably mentioned that before. It was I believe, Major Isaac that married a Sarah French (sometimes written Franch). Let me know what you think. I would guess that if you have Lyman as part of an ancestor's name, there might be a connection to the Lyman family. How, I don't know. But, I'll continue to keep you updated as to anything I find out. I'm looking for a connection myself. Take care. Marion Scherer

    3. Hi, My name is Gail Rogers. My great great grandfather was Freeman French from Naples NY(Ontario County, which is just south of Monroe County). I was interest in your Lyman/French connection. One of his children was named Lyman.b. 1863 and died 1880. Freeman's father was Joseph French. He had another son named Peter, whose daughter Mary A. married an E. Hinckley. Seems like we might be connected but not real sure how. I would be intersted to know what you have and will share with you as well. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
