    3. Thank you for your list of Frenchs in Otsego County, NY, arising from the question about the French-Wheeler connection. This fits in with some research I have done in the Burgess line. Just after the American Revolution the Burgesses had a farm on the line between Otsego and Herkimer Counties, NY. The eldest son of the family Gideon Burgess (born in 1775) married Sally French, and his sister Dorcus Burgess (born the next year) married James J. Wheeler in Herkimer County. I have found that families moving west often stick together. I think that is the case with the Burgesses and the Frenchs and the Wheelers. I have traced the ancestry of Sally French (I think) from an autograph book which belonged to her daughter. In that autograph book three people contributed poems, all calling themselves "cousins" and all in Plainfield township, Windham County, CT. They are Henry French, Sarah French and Delight French. On a visit to the Union Cemetery in the village of Moosup in Plainfield Township I found and photographed all three of their graves and in the town records I found their parents where Hezekiah and Olive French (also in the Union Cemetery). I think Sally is Hezekiah's sister, based on their children calling each other cousins. This is bolstered by the fact that Gideon Burgess' grandparents are buried in Oneco village in Sterling township, CT - not two miles from Moosup in Plainfield township where the Frenchs lived for three generations. If that is correct, records show Sally French's parents to be John French (born 26 October 1747) and his wife Delight (?) French and her grandparents are Nathaniel French (died before 1757 when his wife remarried) and his wife Sarah (?) French. I feel there must be other siblings of Sally (French) Burgess and Hezekiah French and I am hoping one or more of them will be among the Frenchs you list in Otsego County suggesting family members moved west together (the dates are right for this to be the case). Does anyone on the French list know who the siblings of Sally, and or Hezekiah are? Does anyone on the list know how this French family fits into earlier generations of Frenchs? As to the Wheelers: not only did Dorcus Burgess (the sister-in-law of Sally French) marry James J. Wheeler, but they apparently settled on the Burgess farm on the line between Otsego and Herkimer County, NY. I know this because quite a few Wheelers are buried in the little Burgess family plot on the farm. The Wheelers buried there are as follows: Harvey Wheeler died 11 July 1888, aged 86 years 4 months; James J. Wheeler died 31 March 1841, age 74 years; Dorcus (Burgess) wife of James J. Wheeler died 12 Dec 1855, age 79 years; Jerrauld Wheeler, son of James J. and Dorcus, died 25 July 1844 in his 36th year; Emily daughter of Jerrauld and Pauline Wheeler died 28 July 1850, 23 years, 9 months, 25 days and Harriet daughter of Jerrauld and Pauline Wheeler, died 10 Sept. 1845, 23 years. Do any of these Wheelers relate to the French-Wheelers which initiated the inquiry you responded to with the Frenchs of Otsego County? Does anyone have any further information on this line, or the French, Burgess, Wheeler connection in central NY state? Dean Burgess

    3. Hi all, I'm new to your list. I have a French/Wheeler connection, I think, but am not sure: History of Addison County, VT, by HP Smith, 1886; D. Mason & Publishers, Syracuse, NY; page 375: "Wheeler French located in Addison in 1833 and his father, Nathaniel, was one of the early settlers in New Haven {my note: CT?}. George, son of Wheeler, now resides here, one of the ex-representatives of the town in the General Assembly." Wheeler French b, 1798 VT, d. 1875 VT, married 1826 to Mary Champlin, b. 1802 VT, d. 1877 VT. They were the parents of the above George Wheeler French, Harriet, Mary and Emily French. Mary Champlin French 1834-1914, one of the aforementioned daughters, married the Hon. Cyrus Walton Strong of VT fame, which Dwight's History of the Strong Family corroborates, and they ultimately ended up in CA at their deaths. They were my great-great grandparents. I do not know who Wheeler French's father, Nathaniel was, nor where he came from. In the 1850 census, Wheeler has a George Champion (could be Champlin?) age 15 b. Canada living with the family. So there might be a Canadian connection. Anyone have any of these people in their lines or does any of it look familiar? 3. I'm trying to research the ancestry of Charles Byron French. According to what I've found so far, he was born May 1, 1859 in Fayette, WI to Will and Mary French. He was married for Janie ? between 1881 and 1900, and then to Cynthia Sugg from 1904 until he died, August 1, 1940, in Arkansas. I would appreciate any information anyone might have concerning Charles' parents. Sincerely, Miki French Hobson

    3. Dear Mara, My maiden name is French and my family line comes from Salisbury, Massachusetts. I really appreciated receiving this e-mail as I have always wondered about how to get in touch with those "in charge" of the French Family Association. Certainly you must care for your mother and I am sure everyone understands life priorities. The living are more important than those we wish to understand from earlier generations. I will keep this e-mail and try you back in a year. Best wishes to you and take care. 1. [FRENCH-L] Working on the Railroad
    2. My grandfather, William Thomas French worked on the railroad. He was b.9-6-1900, in Jasper County, IL. Do not know his date of death, but he died young. Guess is around 1930-1935. Can anyone tell me how to find info on the railroads. I believe the name was the Illinois Central. Thank you very much. Josia Greathouse

    2. Hi Mara - I have a 91-year-old mother too and have some sense of what you are going through. It isn't easy. I wish you and your mother the best of luck. We miss you and will look forward to your return to genealogy, whenever you can fit it in again. Best, Muffy Moore (Mary French Moore)

    3. I know you are all wondering what happened to Mara French and the French Family Association. I've been handling all the affairs for my 91-year old mother who has had strokes and seizures for the past year now. For the past month we have had Hospice help out. Currently she is doing a bit better, but her memory is poor and she is bedridden. She has never had an operation or threat of a terminal illness in her life. I've also been holding down a full-time job. I miss genealogy terribly, but I can't get enough time to do a good job researching and putting together the newsletter. I would like to extend the membership dues for the year 2000 to include membership for the year 2001. NOTE: Nothing was published in 2000. I'll keep you informed as to when I'm able to do more. Thank you for your continued interest in the French family. My Gr parents got and was mar there in abt 1887, Paden Cox Baldw in and Sarah Jane Pumphrey Smith. We thought this would be a memory for genealogy. I wonder if those persons with the French Charts they made couls or would be able to help you with the replies to querries abt French name as they must have the charts etc.??? A suggestion. Do you have a list of the Charts made to date with beginning person etc. with the number and maybe primary area it covers? Tell your mother that she has many unknown descendants that are wishing her well in her 9o yrs.. I will keep you in my prayers and if there is something I can do to help releive you of some French duty or do some posting for you etc. let me know.
