French List Members, Could someone please clear up something for me. I have always been under the impression that Mary FRENCH b.1634 dau. of Thomas & Mary (Scudamore) FRENCH married Robert SMITH b. bef. 1626. Isn't this couple the ggrandparents of Joseph Smith, of the Mormon church? I have been reading an article that states all the records that name have named these people as the gggrandparents of Joseph Smith are incorrect and the correct names are William SMITH and Rebecka KEAS. This is suppose to be according to Topsfield Vitals. Does anyone happen to know the truth in this matter? If the author is correct, how is it that "so many" of these other records would be wrong? Martin FRENCH, b. abt 1755 in St. Marys County MD. Died abt. Apr 20, 1804, Nelson County, KY. Son of Ignatius and Susannah. Brother of James. I was able to find him in the surnames of Valley Forge, Dec. 1777 thru March 1778 at Wilmington. Does anyone know who he married. I have a tentative 'Sarah' which I picked up from someone. Does anyone have her full name and any further documentation?
11/25/00 Hi Cousins: I have just read the digest that mentions the Valley Forge site and I have a "feeling" from reading some old court records and lists of residents, etc. that there is a link between some FRENCHes and SEALEs families. Does anyone have any SEALE (et al) in their trees w/ the FRENCHes? So you have any business transactions, etc between them. I have seen them "together" many times, so I really feel there must have been some marriages. Would love to hear from anyone w/any facts or ideas. Thanks so much. Can share my SEALE info if you wish. Nancy/ILL
Jan that was what I typed in and could not get to it. Maybe I am doing it wrong. Computer literacy is not my strong suit. What does it say about the two Samuel Frenches? Is Mason French on the list. He was the son of John French of Fauquier County and many of the folks in the unit are from that county. I will try one more time to get into these record. M
Here is the URL: http://165.83.115.136/VFMuster/index.htm I would be interested in the Samuel FRENCHs you have in Virginia but only when you have time to check. No hurry! Howdy French Cousins--- One of my g2grandfathers was Joseph P. French, b. 3-23-1812, Edgefield, South Carolina; d. 10-22-1879, Pike County, Alabama. To date we have learned nothing of Joseph's parents or siblings, so would be most grateful for any information in this regard that anyone might run across and could furnish to us. I could not bring this up. Can you check it again. Perhaps a link would help.
I have not had a chance to go to the list but can tell you I have a muster report for Capt, Peter Grants Company where my ancestor Mason French turned in the reports for several months. He was the ranking officer in camp and signed the reports. I will look to see if he is on the list as he should be. If you e-mail me privately I may be able to help with Samuel French. Off the top of my head I think I know of two from Virginia but would have to dig through my files.
Thought some of you might find this interesting...go to: http://165.83.115.136/VFMuster/index.htm Enter the surname FRENCH and give it a chance to load. Does anyone know who the Samuel FRENCH from Virginia is? Or any of the men from Virginia with the surname FRENCH. I would like to identify which families they come from. While you're there, check out your other surnames. Good luck...Jan Lund

Sorry, Lorri, there was another Micah French who married Ruth Wild. The first Micah born to Thomas French in 1720 appears to have died as an infant and the name was used again for Thomas' last born in 1726. He did indeed marry Ruth Wild, according to Chart #5. Can you provide a citation for "The FRENCH FAMILY HISTORY, researched by Jerry O'Neil Coonley". Was it published? It might shed some light on my line. Thanks Good luck on your search.
