    1. [FRENCH-L] MASON FRENCH Nov 1721

    3. 12/29/00 Dear FRENCH Researchers: I have been reading all of the messages of late and I have to admit I dont really know anything about the FRENCH organization you are talking about. I would like to join it when possible. Can someone who belongs, besides Mara, email me and tell me about it and how much it costs? I would appreciate it. Now, down to the genealogy of this. I have a court record from RICHMOND CO VA, Nov 1721 which is as follows: In Richmond County 11/1721 DAVID SEAL and MASON FRENCH of Westmoreland County were involved in the murder of JONAS ALLEN at the Tavern of WALTER ANDERSON in Hanover Parish. DAVID was accused of beating him with his fists and stomping him with his feet. MASON FRENCH abused him sexually. They were to stand trial in Williamsburg. Witnesses who testified at the trial were WILLIAM PANNELL, WILLIAM ROW, EDMOND DUNNAHOE, WALTER ANDERSON, CHARLES SEALE (DAVID's brother), JOSEPH KING and ARCHIBALD DOUGLAS. At the meeting of the council and Governor or Virginia on the 16th of April 1723, these three [?] men who had been convicted of manslaughter for the death of JONAS ALLEN were pardoned and "all the penalties and forfeitures to which they were liable" were remitted to them. My question is, do any of you have this MASON FRENCH in your line? I am interested in his family; ie, parents, siblings, children, nieces and nephews, etc. My relatives are probably DAVID SEAL and CHARLES SEALE and I am having a hard time connecting any SEAL (E S) to my last known SEAL, FIELDING SEAL. I believe that this DAVID and CHARLES are part of our family, and since DAVID and MASON were good friends (I have seen them mentioned together before, too), it is possible that there were marriages between the SEALs and the FRENCHes. Can anyone help me out on this? And just as a curious fact: My maiden name is ALLEN and my mother's name was SEALE. Could I be related to all of these folks?? :o) Any help would be appreciated. Nancy/IL

    3. FRENCH FAMILY ANCESTORS IN WINDHAM COUNTY, CT, or neighboring counties in RI and MA, or in OTSEGO COUNTY, or HERKIMER COUNTY, NY - I am hoping to confirm what I have found as the ancestry of Sally (French) Burgess for a volume of the family history I hope to finish by Christmas 2001. Please reply if you have any connections with people in the following list (or think you might). Nathan French of Plainfield, Connecticut who married Sarah (?). he died before 29 December 1757, because Sarah remarried on that date and is identified in the Plianfield, CT Records Office as the widow of Nathan French. The Plainfield Records Office identifies the following as the children of Nathan and Sarah French: 1. Lydia French born 17 December 1742. 2. Hezekiah French (the first) born 14 September 1744. 3. Mehitable French born 14 September 1746. 4. John French born 26 October 1747. He married Delight (?) on a date unknown. He is listed as the head of a household in the census of 1790 for Plainfield township, Windham County, CT. He is buried in the Union Cemetery in the village of Moosup, in the township of Plainfield in the county of Windham, Connecticut. His gravestone reads: “John French died October 16 1808 age 62 years (I have a photo of the stone and another for the same man next to it which identifies him as a Revolutionary War Veteran who served in Olcott’s Company). His wife is buried beside him with the following inscription: “Delight French wife of John French died October 20 1822 age 72 years.” 5. Isaac French born 5 May 1750 and listed as head of a household in Volluntown, CT in the Census of 1790. Next generation The children of John French and Delight (?) are as follows: 1. Sally French (this is the birth I am trying to verify) born 4 March 1776, married Gideon Burgess. Gideon is the grandson of John Burgess and Hannah (James) Burgess who are both buried in Sterling village, Plainfield township, Windham County, CT. Gideon’s father was John Burgess who married Urania Mowrey. They moved to a farm on the county line between Otsego County, NY and Herkimer County, NY between the villages of Winfield and Richfield Springs when John returned from service in the Revolutionary War (the Green Mountain Boys at the Battle of Quebec). Gideon is their first son and may have been born in Windham County CT, or in NY. His younger brother Morey Burgess returned to the village of Moosup in Plainfield township, Windham Co. CT to practice medicine. He is buried near the Frenches in the Union Cemetery in Moosup. Gideon remained in NY state where he owned a tavern on the Cherry Valley Turnpike. Sally’s granddaughter kept an autograph book in which several of the children of Hezekiah French of Moosup, Plainfield township, Windham County, CT, identify themselves as her cousins. This makes me think Hezekiah is Sally (French) Burgess’ brother, but I have no other documentation of that. Sally (French) Burgess is buried in Winfield, Herkimer County, NY. 2. Hezekiah French (Sr. the second) born in 1788 and identified as the son of John French and Delight. He marries Olive F. Hall in Plainfield, Windham County, CT 28 April 1816 and is buried in the Union Cemetery at Moosup village, Windham Co. CT. His stone reads: “Hezekiah French died October 6, 1868 aged 81 years.” His wife’s grave is beside him and reads “Olive French wife of Hezekiah French died October 8 1869 age 77 years.” Gravestones among the Frenches at Moosup, Plainfield, Windham County, CT would put the following as possible siblings as well: Nathaniel who married Rachel and had a daughter Lucy who died in 1820 age 16 years; Abner French who might be a grandson who married Betsy and died 16 May 1860 at age 69; Jonas who’s wife Elizabeth died in 1828 at 35 years. Some siblings could also have gone west into Otsego, or Herkimer Counties, NY, as Sally did. Hezekiah and Olive’s children’s births and some of their marriages appear in the Plainfield Record Office. They are as follows: 1. Emeline Elizabeth French born 8 May 1817. In another record she is called Pauline Elizabeth French. I did not find her grave among the Frenches in Moosup and so she probably married. 2. Henry French born 6 November 1818. He wrote a poem in the autograph book of Sally (French) Burgess’ granddaughter which he dated to his cousin 18 August 1841 in Plainfield, CT. I did not find his grave among the Frenches in the Union Cemetery at Moosup. 3. Sally French born 6 September 1820 (perhaps a namesake of Sally (French) Burgess?). I did not find her grave among the Frenches in Moosup. She probably married. 4. Stephen French born 21 April 1822. The Plainfield record office calls him “Stephen John.” On his gravestone in the Union Cemetery in Moosup it says: “Stephen John French son of Hezekiah and Olive French died April 23 1832 age 10 years.” 5. Delight French born 11 April 1824. She can also be found in the IGI. She writes a poem in Sally (French) Burgess granddaughter’s autograph book as her cousin in Plainfield, CT, 17 August 1841. She is buried in the Union Cemetery, Moosup. Her stone reads: “Delight French, daughter of Hezekiah and Olive French died August 4 1842 age 18 years.” 6. Susan French born 11 February 1826. In the record of her marriage (which identifies her parents as Hezekiah and Olive French) she is called Sarah French. She marries John M. Becker, a carriage maker, from the village of Brooklyn, Windham County, CT on 15 February 1848. A note says she was 23 years old at her marriage which agrees with the birth of Susan in the Records Office.. She writes a poem in Sally (French) Burgess’ granddaughter’s autograph book as her cousin Sarah French in Plainfield 4 September 1841. She is buried under her maiden name with the Frenches in the Union Cemetery at Moosup. The stone reads: “Susan French, born February 11 1826 died June 27 1890. 7. Olive French born 16 May 1828 and married at Plainfield Warren Williams of Brooklyn, Windham Co. CT on 25 November 1847. In a note it says she was 20 when she married and he was 23. 8. Hezekiah French (Jr., the third) born 28 February 1831 and married Elizabeth H. Wells at Plainfield, CT 3 October 1853. His gravestone in the Union Cemetery at Moosup reads: “Hezekiah French Jr. died August 25 1868 aged 37 years.” His wife’s stone next to his reads: “Eliza Ann wife of Hezekiah French died October 1 1861 aged 32 years and 4 days.” Two of their children are buried with them: Nella Jane French identified as their daughter and 5 years old and Willie French who died 18 October 1869 aged 18 months. 9. Edwin French born 27 November 1833 is listed as a farmer. The Records Office says he died at age 17 on 25 October 1849. His grave survives in the Union Cemetery at Moosup and reads: “Edwin French son of Hezekiah and Olive French died October 1825 age 17.” 10. Mary Jane French born 16 January 1835. No grave, and so she probably married. If you can help with any of these please reply to DEAN BURGESS through the French list, or at redlion3@juno.com

    1. Re: [FRENCH-L] Re: French Charts & Cassandra
    2. There is a Cassandra French in the line of Burgess French who married a Tarlton. He is the only one on the chart [i.e. # 36] that I have not located. He married in about 1808 so his daughter Cassandra would be younger than those indicated. His list of children I understand came from his father-in-laws pension file. Burgess himself was living in the 1830's because he received proceeds from his brothers' Reuben and George's estates. The bill of particulars says he was in Ohio but I think he may have been in Wayne County, Kentucky. Burgess was the son of John French and Margaret Burgess. John died in 1806 in Fauquier Co. VA In addition to a daughter Cassandra Burgess had several daughters and one son whom he named John a logical choice given his father's name was John. Margaret Amundson

That doesn't sound unreasonable to me, since the organization needs some income to pay for research and costs. Many family organizations do the same -- some info is free for the general public but some is only for members. I am not an actual member, although I have done a lot of referrals. <G> But someone who is a member did share a chart with me, so perhaps someone will do the same for you. Good luck on your research. 3. I do believe the charts are for sale to anyone who want to purchase one. This money helps to pay for paper and reprinting as they are ordered. and the research. I supose they are being added to until it becomes neccesary to branch out with a new and the research continues on. I have taken the newsletters for some years and have never seen anything about only for FFA members. Maybe someone else will have more to say. You have to join FFA to get the newsletters. maxine mmwaw@sprynet.com Looking for Casandra ( Keziah) French b 1795 in Va lived in Dearborn Co Ind. -----Original Message----- From: VEWhite@aol.com <VEWhite@aol.com> To: FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com <FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, December 29, 2000 8:27 AM Subject: Re: [FRENCH-L] Agusta French - Louisiana/Mississippi In a message dated 12/28/00 11:48:05 AM Eastern Standard Time, carolhar@coserv.net writes: > I understand illness in the family as well as the next person, and I do have > patience but when I see mention of the charts and FFA I too would like to be > part of it.
