    1. Re: [FRENCH-L] Petition of Samuel Greenwell
    2. Jaculene G. Masters
    3. I love these puzzles, so will take a stab at it. OK, Sam starts out easy saying Martin was brother of his deceased wife Mary French Greenwell and she was due one fifth the estate, as were brothers James and Raphael Mary French Greenwell--one fifth to her heir Samuel James French--one fifth Raphael French--one fifth Only three siblings getting fifths of an estate? NOW it becomes confusing, but I confuse more easily these days. At any rate, after listing only three siblings Mary, James and Raphael, the list concludes with a "whole bunch" -- Susanna Greenwell, Eleanor Brown, William Yates, Ignatius Yates, Eleanor French and John French, Dorothy Cissell, George Cissell and Barton Yates, "which last mentioned five are infants, his legal representatives." Five infants have HIS representatives? Let's sort the infants. Eleanor and John are later identified as heirs of Ignatius French, whom I now assume is another brother of Martin. I shall brazenly dub him so. Ignatius French--1/5, half of which to each heir Eleanor and John French And that leaves us three "infants" Dorothy and George Cissell and Barton Yates. Yates there are aplenty and Martin has another sib Ann French Yates, whose six heirs must share her fifth of the estate. Ann French Yates--one fifth divided among her six heirs Barton, Martin, Ignatius, William, Eleanor Yates and Susanna Greenwell receive 1/6 of Ann's 1/5. This is questionable as it seems to say Martin, deceased heir of Ann gets one fifth of Martin French's estate but as his namesake it might be that he was so favored; however if we remove Martin from Ann's list she has only five heirs yet each is said to receive 1/6 of her share; I vote for leaving Martin with his 1/6. Ann for some reason has named Susanna Greenwell, probably a niece, possibly a sister-in-law, as equal heir as her children. Now we have three strays left from the whole bunch of names: Eleanor Brown and Dorothy and George Cissell. Eleanor is NOT an infant, and perhaps is guardian of one or more of the infants. Dorothy and George are infants, finally identified as "of Catherine Cissell, representative of Ann Yates." My imagination has run dry. I can't even guess what they're doing here, but I do offer you this list as a possible revision of Martin French's heirs. Mary French Greenwell--one fifth to her heir Samuel James French--one fifth Raphael French--one fifth Ignatius French--1/5, half of which to each heir Eleanor and John French Ann French Yates--one fifth divided among her six heirs Barton, Martin, Ignatius, William, Eleanor Yates and Susanna Greenwell. Anyone care to explain the Cissells? jg seattle

    2. Hi Lorri, The question of a connection of Rachel French to your Springfield, Clark Co., OH. FRENCHs is a good one. You have me wondering as well if it is possible. I have nothing on where Benjamin FRENCH was born, betw. 1763-1775, nor where Deborah was born, betw. 1773-1780. The bouncing back and forth of the births of the children between Fountain Co., IN and OH are interesting. Then to throw a wrench into things is the birth of Rebecca in Maryland in 1796. Unfortunately I don't have the birthplace of James FRENCH. I have the following on Benjamin: According to Grt. Grandson, William Edgar French, Benjamin was living abt. 1780. According to the Common Pleas, Miami Co., Ohio on microfilm #1030025 of the Family History Library (LDS) pg. 108 Alexander No. 7 Benjamin French, Mordicai Mendinghall, John Hoop } In Debt $80 Damage $50 Judgement by default--- Sept 11th 1810 Paid by the Defendant--$31.11 Benjamin French, Estate, intestate estate 1811, Champaign Co., OH, Common Pleas Court Minute Book2, p117. To all my unknown French and Davis descendant cousins , I am trying still to find. Well , below is a message similar to what i posted some time back about 4 months. I hope all Frenches can check their lines and see if they have any names of CASANDRA or KEZIA+H as that is a nick name and she used it once that I have found. If you have a name of either in your line even tho it may not be her, there somewhere may be a branch from there that she could be in. 3. I posted the following yesterday in a query about Martin FRENCH, then promptly sat down to figure it out. I'll be danged if it makes any sense to me. The numbers just don't seem to add up. Can someone help me interpret. This is the best I could do: Martin left no will: "d.intestate" (this is about the only thing I'm sure of) Brothers and sisters of Martin were: Mary French Greenwell (deceased), James French, Raphael French and Ann French Yates (deceased). Each of these siblings received 1/5 of the pot (4/5ths) Mary French Greenwell's portion was passed to Samuel Greenwell (was he husband or son?). Ann French Yates portion was divided into 6ths and passed to Ann's children ??? Ignatius, William, Martin (but he got 1/5), Eleanor, Barton, Susannah. Where to Dorothy and George Cissell fit in? Also mentioned are Eleanor French and John French who received the last 5th, heirs of Ignatius (though not brother and sister of Martin??) This document would also indicate that Martin left no children, is that a fair assumption? Help me please, as this hugely impacts my siblings of Martin, son of Ignatius. "8/1/1804: Petition of Samuel Greenwell shows that a certain Martin French d. intestate on or about April 20, 1804 seized of "Twittenham", leaving your petitioner, heir and representative of Mary Greenwell (deceased) who was sister to sd. Martin French and entitled to 1/5 part; James French, a brother 1/5 part; Raphael French, 1/5 part; Susanna Greenwell, Eleanor Brown, William Yates, Ignatius Yates, Eleanor French, John French, Dorothy Cissell, George Cissell, and Barton Yates, which last mentioned five are infants, his legal representatives. Eleanor French and John French, heirs of Ignatius French, 1/5; 1/6 to Barton Yates, heir; Martin Yates, dec'd who was one of the heirs of Ann Yates, dec'd, sister of the dec'd, 1/5; the others 1/6 or 1/5 pt. to Susanna Greenwell, one of the heirs of Ann Yates, sister of the dec'd; Eleanor Yates, 1/6 of 1/5 of Ann Yates; William Yates, 1/6 of 1/5 pt. of Ann Yates, sister of the dec'd; 1/6 of 1/5 pt. to Ignatius Yates, of Ann Yates, sister of the dec'd; Dorothy Cissell and George Cissell of Catherine Cissell, repres. of Ann Yates. 3. Thelma, My John Wood married Mary T French in Limestone County, Alabama in 1844, They were about 20 at the time. John Wood's parents were born in North Carolina, Mary's in North Carolina and South Carolina. My Grandmother, Rachel Elvira Russell, told me that Mary was Indian, which sounds right since Limestone County was an Indian Territory at the time she and John were born. After marriage, they went to Marble Falls Texas, where John became a Texas Ranger Capt.. They are buried there. 3. 12/31/00 To Margaret Amundson: Thank you for the great information you sent on MASON FRENCH. I am working on "a hunch" about the FRENCH family since I have seen the SEAL(E)(S) and FRENCH name together in several documents and articles; and there was also a FRENCH SEAL in the SEAL line, so it seems logical that there were marriages between the 2 families. I just want to find the ancestors of our FIELDING SEAL b ~1770 in PA or VA, probably, and I am hoping that maybe someone on this list will have at least one FRENCH/SEAL(E)(S) marriage in their charts. I will be more than happy to share my SEAL(E) info w/ anyone who asks for it. So, thanks again, Margaret for all of your info. I appreciate it and I hope to hear from anyone else who may have some information or ideas. You all have a good New Year, Nancy/IL
