Hi, I'm new to this list. Researching Harlan Spencer French, died Naylor, Missouri, Jan 7, 1943. Married Leona Moody May of 1924 in Tampa, FL Any help will be appreciated. Jean French
Sorry Lucille, no Sylvester. The Susquehanna Company was founded in the mid 1700s. None of this history includes anyone that is of modern age, thus no SS #s. Marion
Might there be a Sylvester French listed? No nothing about this man. My Grandfather was Clarence Hempstead French and Sylvester French is listed has his father. Clarence was born March 31,1895 in Hope, Arkansas he and his father where (Farmers) so they have no SS#. Any reply would be great. Thanks and Good Hunting Lucille
Good morning from sunny yet cool Florida!! I just purchased a four volume set of books entitled The Susquehannah Company Papers 1750-1755; Edited by Julian P. Boyd. Wyoming Historical & Geological Society. Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, 1930; in order to further my research on Chart 179, Jeremiah French of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New Jersey (possibly Connecticut and Massachusetts). In a nutshell the Susquehanna Company was the large land company that settled thousands of people from New England, primarily Connecticut, to the Wyoming Valley area of Pennsylvania. A conflict arose between the New England settlers and the settlers belonging to the William Penn charter. Thus resulted the Yankee Pennamite Wars. I have not read all of the volumes in their entirety, but would like to share what I have found so far in Volume I. >From Volume I of this set are listed the following names: The Memorial of Joseph Blackleach and Others to the Connecticut General Assembly. Jeremiah French, Neamiah French and Samuel French. This "Memorial" appears to be a petition signed by approximately 350 men who are described as "... all of ye Colony of Connecticut" and are interested in settling "vacant and "unclaimed" lands in Pennsylvania (Wyoming Valley area). The document is dated at Hartford the 20th day of May AD 1752. In the same Volume, Vol. I, is a Deed From the Delaware Indians to the Second Delaware Company. Dated at Braywick, October 26, 1755. John French Jr. is one of the men listed as delivery of lands through this deed. Again in Volume I, "Deed from Indians of the Six Nations to the Susquehannah Company" , one of the men listed as receiving lands in this deed is John French. In this portion of the deed the men receiving land are "..all of the aforesd Colony of Connecticutt in New England." Samuel French, who was mentioned previously is listed again in this Volume is listed again as follows: "The following persons Were admitted by Tho Darling Esq In the year 1755 by order of the present Com" Samuel French of Darbe half a share ( the admittance was to the Susquehanna Land Company) As I read through this volume and the other three, I'll post what I find regarding Frenchs. Fascinating reading and more names than you can imagine! Sincerely, Marion Scherer Chart 179 Jeremiah French of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York (possibly Connecticut and Massachusetts)
Several people have told me that they did not receive Page 1, so I am taking the liberty of re-sending it......sorry to all who get duplicates: ******* I have tried to make a Tiny Tafel...so please bear with me, and let me know if you see any familiar surnames....I would be very glad to exchange information. Edith Bartley- Our Jeremiah French b 1712, second son of Samuel French the Joiner of Stratford CT, resided in Stratford to about 1748; res. in Southbury, Town of Woodbury, Conn about 1749-56; Beekman Precinct, Amenia & Dover, Dutchess Co, NY 1756-93. He lost by confiscation in Revolution 400 acres of land leased from Beekman Estate near South Dover, Dutchess Co, NY; his great-grandson Royal Rafe Hinman records that Jeremiah died on that farm, later owned by a Preston family. His homestead may have been the Drover's Tavern. He acquired extensive lands in Manchester Vt, now comprising the entire area of Manchester Village, and deeded to his son Jeremiah and his daughter Sarah, wife of William March. These lands were confiscated during the Revolution, when Jeremiah Jr and William Marsh joined the Loyalist and the British army. The exact date of death of Jeremiah senior is unknown. He may be buried beside Hannah (Edwards) French, his first wife, in Dover Plains Cemetery. Under date of Jan. 8, 1793 the ledger of David Duncan, store-keeper at Dover Furnace, contains the last charge against Jeremiah French senior. He may have died soon thereafter. Charges to "Jeremiah French Jur." run from Apr. 4, 1792 to Aug 22, 1796. After the war Jeremiah, along with many other loyalists went to Ontario where the British were making land available to the British soldiers. My Andrew French was born 1755 to Samuel French 3rd. He enlisted July 15 1777 as private 4th Co Queen's Loyal Rangers, Capt Jeremiah French of Manchester VT; served in Burgoyne campaign of Revolutionary War. He married Catherine Barto in Dorset, Bennington Co VT in 1788 If these match any of your Frenches please contact me. Thanks William Clifford "Bill" French Houston TX wcfrench@compuserve.com
From: Jim Church <steeples@home.com> To: VERMONT-L@rootsweb.com Hello, A message recently posted on the Vermont Rootsweb list by Jim Church <steeples@home.com> gave the names of several Frenches whose land was confiscated in Vermont in 1778. I am interested in Andrew French whose land in Manchester Vt was confiscated; Jeremiah and Benjamin French also had their estates in Manchester confiscated. Is this Andrew French a descendant of William French, b. Ipswich, and Abigail Wiggin? Does someone have his line? My husband's French line goes: Thomas 1,2,3, William 4, Andrew 5,6,7; was Andrew of Manchester one of those? Andrew 5 married Abigail MARSTON Murdoch; he was b. say 1700-1710, so he might still have been alive. Andrew 6 was b 1735 and d. Nov. 1779, but I thought he always lived in Stratham NH. Andrew 6 was b. 1761, so he was probably too young. Other Frenches whose estates were confiscated were Charity French in Pownal and (Henry) French of Wells. Thank you, Edith edith.bartley@worldnet.att.net
Very interesting... I tried logging on to this site and, for the first time, was not able to connect. I belong to several mail lists and sent this address to each. I hope we didn't bring their system down by all trying to log in at the same time!!! Maybe try again later. I'm not sure of the accuracy of this tool... but it is definitely interesting. Enter a surname (last name) into the form and you'll get a map of the United States showing the distribution of people with this surname within the 50 United States. This map is often helpful when trying to determine a starting point for genealogy projects. The source of this data is the 1850 Census, 1880 Census, 1920 Census, and 1990's phone books. Note that the Census data is a sampling of 1 in 100 names, so the 1990 data is the most accurate. It just might give you a hint where you need to look. http://genbooks.hypermart.net/search/distribution.html
