Carolyn--- If you ever run across a Joseph P. French, I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Joseph was b. 1812, South Carolina, d. 1879, Pike County, Alabama, and was one of my g2grandfathers. Ralph Banks (RafB@aol.com), Austin, TX
I am looking for information on Millard French son of Nicholas and Martha aka Mattie (Hall) French of Stanton, Ky. born around 1909. Last known residence was Terre Haute, Indiana in 1953. Nicholas died young of typhoid fever and Martha was pregnant with Millard when Nicholas died in Ky. Powell County. There is a picture of a Millard Filmore French on the site that Stan French so generously told us about. Does anyone know of my Millard French? I also have the obituary of George French from Stanton, Ky. died in the 1930's in McLean County, Illinois. He would be an Uncle of Millard's if anyone is interested. I have the obituary for Otie French Irish, also who was a sister to Millard. If anyone is interested please let me know. ~Debbie in Central Illinois~
Jack, I will try to help you with what I know, as I think this is my French family, too... First, I found a Michael French and a Nathaniel French in Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1810. Then I found Michael, Nathaniel and a Thomas French in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1820. Then in 1830 I think this Michael (who was probably the father) was in Perry County, Tennessee along with another Michael (probably a son). My Nathaniel French went on and was in Green County, Illinois in 1830 and then went on to Texas. I think the Michael French that was in Spartanburg County, South Carolina was the father of my Nathaniel, Michael, Larkin, Thomas and Oliver. My Nathaniel seemed to name his children after his brothers, Michael and Oliver. I have been corresponding with a lady who seems to know quite a bit about this family. Her name is Rose and her e-mail is Whotee1@aol.com If you all find anything new I would truly appreciate hearing about it. All, The following quotes are presented in order to focus a search in SC for these THOMASONs History of Arkansas, 1887, p. 252, "HUGH FRENCH THOMASON **** is of Huguenot extraction. His Protestant ancestors, to escape the bloody persecution of the Catholics, emigrated from France in colonial times, and settled in South Carolina, and there intermarried and crossed the fiery impetuosity of the Frenchman with cooler blood of robust English stock". >From The Encyclopedia of the New West, Speer, Ed., 1881, p. 48- "Hon. HUGH FRENCH THOMASON ***His father, Colonel Daniel THOMASON, was a native of Warren Co., Tennessee, ***His father [the grandfather of General Thomason)-HH] was a native of South Carolina. Hugh French THOMASON was born 1826 in Smith Co., TN and died in 1893 in Van Buren, AR. His father Daniel THOMASON was born in 1801, in an area that became Warren Co., TN. Daniel's father was William THOMASON about whom little is known. In a biography of a grandson William is described as "of Tennessee". Given that we are talking about grandparents of Hugh French THOMASON there are four possible families from whom to select as the those of SC origin. The known names are William THOMASON, Jane FRENCH, John DENTON and, possibly, Sarah MULLINS. It is known that the DENTONs came from NY to VA and on to NC/SC. The FRENCHs were of NJ before they came to SC, It appears that the MULLINS were of VA. The THOMASONs remain undiscovered, the comment that Colonel Daniel THOMASON's father was a native of SC seems clear enough. Since the information is from a secondary source (reference books), the accuracy of the statement is subject to question. Given the detail in the references and the dates of publication, it is likely that the authors source was Hugh French Thomason himself who was an educated man (lawyer). Hugh French Thomason was a prominent man in a regional sense, as he was elected to attend the early sessions of the Confederate Congress as a representative of Arkansas. He was against secession, so ultimately was over ruled. and returned to Arkansas where he remained active in politics in Arkansas until his death. Little else has been uncovered that helps with the ancestry of this THOMASON family. There are THOMASONs in SC during the late 1700s and the early 1800s, but a link has not been established. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who can add to this saga. Best regards, Hugh

Someone else mentioned to me about a month ago that there was a French man who married a woman with the surname of Spencer and maybe that was where the Spencer middle name came from. If I can find her post, I'll send it to you. A lot of Richards, Roberts,Eugenes, Spencers, in this family, isn't there? Carol, I know that Robert Harlan French's father's name is Harlan Spencer French and his mother's name is Leona Ann Moody. They were married in Tampa May 14, 1924 and Robert was born in Lakeland May 1 or 2, 1928. I'm still trying to find out why Harlan was in this area as his family was from Missouri and he is buried in Naylor County, MO. Leona's family migrated to Bunnell, Fl from Appel Co., Georgia and I have information on her family back pretty far. Thought the Eugene/Lakeland connection would help clear up this mystery! Maybe that was a cousin of Robert's or a brother of Harlan's as I don't know anything yet about Harlan's family. Let's look at it and see where it goes. Good hunting! Hi Jean, To tell you the truth I have no idea if we could connect or not. The only information I have on Eugene is what I found in a book written by a family member for a reunion several years ago. I will quote it for you: "John Richard French was born July 7, 1873 in Georgia, probably Macon, Georgia, to William Richmond French and Susan Elfira Moore French. It seems they lived there but moved to Louisiana some time later. William R. French died in Big Sandy, Texas when John R. was only 10 years old, probably in 1883.Susan M French remarried three times, once to a Mr. Slappy, once to a Mr. Thomas and to a Mr. Deaton of Pittsburg, Texas. John R. had three brothers, Will French, Eugene French, and Amry French. Amry died at 16 years of age in 1896. Eugene French loved in North Carolina and Lakeland Florida. Will French lived in New Orleans before and at the time of her death. (Susan's) John R. French's uncle, Uncle Frank French, William Richmond's brother lived in Mount Pleasant, Texas. There were relatives there at the time. A cousin Jack French lived in Paris." This is all the information I have on Eugene. I do know that it is a family name. My father's name is Eugene as well. If you have the information on your husband's father (is he still alive?)t his original application for Social Security. It will have his parents names on it. That is how I found my husband's great grandparents name. From his grandfather's SS app. This is the first lead to any possibility of my family I have found on the list. I would like to see where it goes. You never can tell. Carol
Carol, I don't know if there is a connection, but there are enough similarities for me to want to contact you. Do you have any more information about Eugene French? Here's what I know about my husband's family. His father Robert Harlan French was born in Lakeland. My husband's brother's name is Steven Eugene French. Robert had one sister - her name is Patricia Ann (French) Durrance. - she lives in Bunnell, FL. Do you think their might be a connection? If so, let's talk more.
