What county is/was Cape May in? Have some information on Sussex County Frenchs that I will share. Marion Scherer
I am looking for family information on Lydia French (1774-1850) who married a John Van Gilder on May 28, 1794. They married and lived in Cape May County, N.J. Her parents were supposed to be a Thomas French and wife Hannah Peasner or Rosner (depends which book you look in, but I am sure he did not marry them both on the same date of Nov.14, 1774 at First Baptist Church in Cape County, NJ) . Lydia was born in Jan of 1774 or 1775. I feel like the 1775 date is correct. Thomas French was single when the 1774 tax rattables were done in Cape May county. I got that information from the NJ State Genealogical magazine. That is all I know about Lydia's parents. They just disappeared after Lydia was born. I found Lydia's history in the Vangilder files. I have not had any trouble following Lydia French Vangilder and John. Their children were Sarah, Hannah, John, Thomas, and Lecitia Van Gilder. They are all buried in United Methodist Church cemetery in Petersburg, N.J. Would anyone have any info on these French's? There is a Thomas French from Burlington, NJ but he is not Thomas's father because the dates are not right. Besides the North Jersey Frenches know nothing about my Thomas.. Any help is appreciated. Anyone familiar with an A.D.W. FRENCH or any of his writings? There is apparently a compilation he made of County Records in England 1100-1350. It's suppose to have almost 600 pages? Published abt 1896. Also wanting to know an email, telephone or address for a Wayne French in the (Detroit?) Michigan area who has a great deal of French family information. (over 60K French names?!) thanks Bill French Houston TX wcfrench@compuserve.com

I also posted this to the French Genforum. George Washington French born October 20, 1823 Fayette County, Indiana d November 08, 1915 Pretty Prairie, Kingman County, Kansas m Caroline Clark b January 11, 1829 Maryland d June 16, 1910 Pretty Prairie, Kingman County, Kansas m March 21, 1847 Union County, Indiana, he is in the 1850 and 1860 census of Ripley County, Indiana. I have his parents as Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson. Someone said that he was not the son of Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson, that he is the son of Jonathan French and Eliza Swift. John French and Eliza Swift were married January 15, 1826 in Dearborn County, Indiana. George Washington French was born three years BEFORE the French/Swift marriage. So I don't believe that George Washington French is the son of Eliza and John French, since he was born three years before that marriage occurred. I did find a George French age 22 b Indiana in the 1850 census, he is living with Henry Swift and his wife Mary in Center Township, Dearborn County, Indiana. I suspect this George French is the son of John and Eliza Swift French. I have the children of Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson as: Mariah French b July 15, 1821 m Squire Davis George Washington French b October 20, 1823 m Caroline Clark Samuel French b May 08, 1825 m 1st Mary Clark m 2nd Mariah Lowe Mary Jane French b November 07, 1826 m Robert Clark Jonathan French b December 17, 1827 m Mary Judd sister of Joseph Judd Jackson French b October 01, 1829 d August 02, 1840 Female French b February 01, 1831 d February 01, 1831 Hannah French b April 22, 1832 m Joseph Judd Oliver French b 1834 d 1834 Drucilla French b April 02, 1835 d March 22, 1855 Francis French b February 11, 1837 m Mary Eliza Mansell James French b January 01, 1840 d 1842 Lewis French b 1842 All born in Fayette County, Indiana. I did find another George French in Ripley County, on the 1850 census he is born in 1818 in Indiana, two years BEFORE Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson married. So I don't believe he is the son of Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson... I also think that Caroline Clark, Mary Clark and Robert Clark are brother and sisters. Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson were married August 4, 1820 in Franklin County, Indiana. I am looking for the parents of Jonathan French and Elizabeth Johnson b PA . Jonathan was probably born in PA (some records say NJ and some PA)
