FRENCH Genealogy Book by Howard Barclay French, pg 116 of Vol 1. - Joseph FRENCH [s/o Thomas] born 1698 pg 136 Joseph FRENCH probably marries 1722 [abt 24 yrs old] States: Joseph French died in 1752 [abt 54 yrs old]. He died intestate and the estate was administered by James Farrell, who had married Joseph's daughter Mary in 1751. Why was his son-in-law, James Farrel, the Administrator? Had all of his other sons and son-in-laws moved from the area or died? Joseph FRENCH was quite young when he died. Did he have young children still at home? Could it be his property advertised for sale in 1765?
Thought I should send out the Source information. My maps show Craven Co. is in NC One county over from Onslow Co. NC. I'm wondering if the person presenting was living in Craven County at that time. from: "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772" Reproduced on Genealogy.com's Online Data Set #352 (Immigrants to America, 1600s-1800s). They do not list Craven as a county. Perhaps it was a District. I seem to remember that it included part of NC. Spartanburg and Union were formed in 1785 from District 96. This couple had a son, Joseph, also. The 1773 date is 24 years later so it is possible that the Joseph in the survey is of the son, but my feeling is that it is the parent. I have a publication which addresses the progression of district/county areas in SC. It is a convoluted process for SC in particular, but it can be done. Pacolet River is the key. Here is what I have -- South Carolina was organized into 7 Districts in 1769 and to nine in 1795 The 9 Districts were expanded to 24 in 1798 Beaufort District- Beaufort Ninety-Six District- Abbeyville, Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens, Spartan burg Washington District- Pendleton, Greenville Pinckney District- Union, York Camden District- Chester, Lancaster, Fairfield, Kershaw, Sumter Cheraws District- Chesterfield, Darlington, Marlborough Georgetown District- Georgetown, Marion Charleston District- Charleston, Colleton Orangeburg District- Orangeburg, Barnwell District became counties in 1868 (after Civil War). In 1773 Camden District existed, but Spartanburg and York Districts were yet to be organized. I haven't found the Pacolet River in NC. It is shown on the map in SC, I have the sensing that it has changed names. Still looking. As a matter of interest there is a French Broad River in NC. Does it have anything to do with the FRENCH family? Best regards, Hugh

David, Thank you for your reply. Daniel French came to the Great Swamp, NC after arranging a contract with the Pontell's (who owned the land) in Philadelphia in December 1806. Daniel, in New Haven, was deeply in debt and setting up a shingle mill in NC was his attempt to pay those debts. The attempt was a total failure and Daniel returned to New Have., CT There is no "line" for Daniel French. Despite years of search the most I have found is his parents: Daniel, Sr., (1746-1784) and Eunice Hubbard (1746-1831) French were married in Kensington Parish (Berlin) CT 20 May 1765. Daniel Sr. was born in CT as nearly as I can find. Daniel Jr., is listed in the 1790 CT Census as head of a household of five females. A suggestion of brother(s), without a name, has led nowhere. Daniel Jr., lived, worked, and invented in CT, NY, PA and IN. Daniel Jr, married Sarah (unknown), no records available. Daniel Jr., son's: William, George and Henry built steamboats at Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN 1829-1865. A search of French descendants in IN has led nowhere. Maybe I haven't tried hard enough; would be glad of any assistance. Al.
If I understand the NJ History in colonial times, East Jersey was settled by the Dutch and West Jersey settled by the Quakers (mostly English). The significance is that Joseph FRENCH, Sr. (1698-1752), although of English Quaker extraction, was of East Jersey (Shrewsbury Meeting) in 1736. As has been pointed out, he was in Dutch country. The Dutch kept great records, so maybe something will turn up in that arena. Best, Hugh
Hi Al, Thanks for the information about your Daniel. I had always wondered who he was and from whence he came. I assume he is the same Daniel that is listed in the 1790 U.S. Census, Beaufort County, Newbern District. It lists him and one slave. Did he remain in North Carolina or did he return to Connecticut? Also, has anyone from your line participated in the French Surname DNA project? I am in search of C. (Cornelius?) SMOCK who disappeared (apparently died) before 1816. He was from Cave in Rock, Pope Co., IL Terr. He left a widow and a large family. He and his family are in the USC 1810 Randolph Co., IL Terr. It has occurred to me that he may be one of the soldiers who lost his life (drowned) while being transported to or from New Orleans on a river boat. Is there any record of these losses? Best regards, Hugh

I came across this while looking for something else and thought I would pass it along: Olin A. Kennedy, engaged in the real estate, loan and insurance business in Ogden, was born in McDonough county, Illinois, on the 11th of September, 1861. His father was the Rev. Benjamin B. Kennedy, a native of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and a representative of one of the families of New Jersey of Scotch-Irish lineage. The family was founded in America when that country was still numbered among the colonial possessions of Great Britain, and in the maternal line Olin A. Kennedy comes from ancestors who participated in the Revolutionary war. His father was a minister of the Methodist church, one of the circuit riders of the early days, and devoted the greater part of his life to preaching the gospel. He came to Ogden in 1890 and continued a resident of this city to the time of his death, which occurred on the 5th of June, 1892, when he was sixty-eight years of age. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Rose Patience French, was a native of Virginia. Her father was Isaac French, who served in the war of 1812, and her grandfather, William French, fought for the independence of the colonies in the Revolutionary war. Mrs. Kennedy passed away in Ogden, March 31, 1915, at the notable old age of ninety years. By her marriage she had become the mother of seven children, four sons and three daughters, of whom three are now living: Olin A. of this review; Clarence K., who resides at Puente, California; and Leota S., the wife of E. H. Hutsinpillar, a resident of Ogden. Utah Since Statehood: Historical and Biographical. Volume III. Source Information: Ancestry.com, comp. Utah Since Statehood, Volumes 1-4. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Stella Ruth REASONER and Anna Gertrude REASONER which was taken at the Dowe Studio. Stella's age is noted as 3 years and 7 months, while Anna is noted as 1 year and 10 3/4 months of age at the time. There is no location noted on the photograph, though with the assistance of a REASONER Family researcher I know that Stella Ruth REASONER was born 23 May 1891 and Anna Gertrude REASONER was born 4 Feb 1893 both to parents Royal Froman REASONER and Christina Ellen MCDONALD. Royal Froman REASONER was born 17 Dec 1857 in Scappoose, OR to parents Rev. John Stout REASONER and Tryphena Tryphosa NORTHWAY and died on 29 July 1930 in Winters, CA. Royal and Christina were married on 26 Dec 1889. Christina is believed to have been born 24 Dec 1869 in Elmira, IL to parents ? MCDONALD and ? GRANT. In addition to Stella and Anna the couple also had 4 additional children, Jennie Mabel b. 1895, Rev. Donald Turner b. 1897, William Henry b. 1900, and Dorothy Christina b. 1906. Rev. Donald Turner REASONER married Dorothy FRENCH in 1925 and had three children, Ellen May b. 1926, Mildred Olive b. 1928, and Albert James b. 1932. William Henry REASONER married Helen FOX in 1926 and together had two children, Robert William b. 1928, and Edward Alan b. 1931. Dorothy Christina REASONER married Dr. Arthur C. HUNTLEY in 1929 and had 4 children including, twins Dorothy Isabel and Marie Ellen b. 1930, Barbara Louise b. 1933, and Dr. Arthur Clayton b. 1944 I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
