    3. I also found an earlier census for 1840 Ohio: Name: French, Moses Township: Rush County: Tuscarawas State: Ohio Year: 1840 Roll: M704_430 Page: 344 Image: 165 It shows males: 1 1 1 _ _ 1 which means 1 male child under age 5 years, 1 male child between 5-10, 1 male child between 10-15, then skips two columns to 1 male between 30-40. Then in the next part for females it shows: 2 1 _ _ _ 1 which means 2 female children under 5, 1 female child 5-10, skips 3 columns then 1 female between age 30-40. Possible conclusion: Father and Mother born between 1800 or 1810, have 6 children between ages 5 to 15. 2. Interesting presentation of life in the 1700's Raritan Landing -- mentions name of Lafert Sebring and Phillip French but gives no information on them. One write-up does imply that baptism might occur at any of several churches since this area didn't have its own church- - http://www.raritanlanding.com/voices/voices.htm Example of the 1st person presentation that is used. MARGARET DEGROOT FIELD I MARRIED BENJAMIN FIELD at the Landing and we inherited his aunt's house along the causeway when she died in 1784, but I had my own land, too. My father, Jacob Degroot, didn't believe that only the oldest son should get all the property. When he made his will in 1749, it said my younger brother, sister, and I were to divide equally among us the meadows in Somerset County joining the Bound Brook and also the meadows of Lafert Sebring. . . .

    1. Interesting-Joseph Reade of NY m. Anna French abt 1720
    2. Posted by Hugh: --The New York Gazette and Weekly Post Boy, 11 Apr 1765. NJ Archives, First Series, Vol XXIV (Newspaper extracts vol V 1762-1765)., p 576-- "To be let---The Mill and houses at the Landing on Raritan River which formerly belonged to Joseph FRENCH. Inquire of Joseph Reade in NY" I looked for Joseph Reade at rootsweb and there is a tree there that shows a Joseph Reade married Anna French. Lists 6 children: Joseph Reade, Jr., Laurence, Mary, Sarah, Anne and John. Also shows daughter Anne b. 1726 married Gerrit Van Horn on 22 Mar 1751 in NY. This Anna FRENCH (m. Reade) would be about the same age as Joseph I and wife Allee.

    1. William FRENCH s/o Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH
    2. There are two accounts of William FRENCH (above). One is that he died in SC before or as the family was moving to KY about 1795 and the other is that he went to KY and died in TN in 1808. William was one of six known children of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH. The others were Lafford, Sarah, Joseph, Simon and Mary. His wife is unknown. William held property in SC until 1795 when he and brother, Simon, sold their land apparently in preparation for removal to KY. It appears that all four brothers went to KY and that Lafford returned to SC. Simon became established in Christian Co., KY. There is little to show that William died in SC except the account in William S Bryan and Robert Rose, "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri", p. 329 which is an account of the family of Hugh, son of William FRENCH of SC and his wife, Sally, daughter of Simon FRENCH, who were early settlers in Callaway Co., MO. This book states that William died in SC and his brother, Simon, went to KY about 1795 and took William's family along. It does not address Joseph. It says that William's wife went to Warren Co., TN after William's death. William's brother, Simon, was located in Christian Co., KY and William French, John Denton, Whitefield Elledge, and Joseph Elledge were on the 1797 Warren Co, KY Tax List and later in Wilson Co., TN (tax lists). John DENTON married William's daughter, Jane, presumably in KY. This William died 1808 in Wilson Co., TN (estate sale). John Denton and Hugh FRENCH, as well as the ELLEDGE men, are found next in 1812 in Warren Co., TN. The data that DENTON and his wife, Jane, along with Hugh FRENCH were in Warren Co., TN gives credence to the story that William's widow went to Warren Co., TN after William's death. The problem is where William died. Based on research the evidence seems to indicate that William died in Wilson Co., TN rather than earlier in SC. Looking for anyone with additional data on William or his family. Best regards, Hugh

    1. John French, died in 1713 at Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ

    3. The Cambridge connection is certainly a possibility that I have worked on, but without success either way - can't be accepted or rejected based on what I have found. So is a connection to Newbury or Salisbury, MA. Also no success but a majority of early (prior to 1690) Woodbridge settlers moved down from Mass. The Woodbridge founders were from Newbury as was the name of the community, for a Rev. Woodbridge from Newbury but who never actually set foot in NJ. I studied the 5 other Woodbridge settlers who were granted land at the same meeting as John, brick mason, hoping that I would find they moved together from somewhere to Woodbridge. 3 of the 5 were from Salisbury (across the river from Newbury) but I could find no further connection. I THINK that there are already 1 or 2 yDNA tests that destroy these potential connections, though. I'd have to say that there is a 50/50 chance for a MA connection. The other 50/50 would be England, including Scotland where several other Woodbridge settlers originated. Ultimately, it will be yDNA testing that clears this mess up, I think. The testing so far is just too limited. Land settlement in the late 1600s in NJ was pushed very hard by Cartaret for the King of England who needed the tax revenue for his coffers. So they took folks from wherever they could get them. The original goal for both Woodbridge and Piscataway was to recruit up to 100 families for each site. They advertised heavily both in England and in New England to tempt folks. You bring up an interesting point, but Monnette's records are not documented well enough to re-trace his steps. June 29, 1711, JAMES LEITH, (vide, ante, PART THREE, pp. 249, 256-7), and dau., Margaret, b. Feb. 6, 1712-3. From will, (ARCH., Vol. XXIII, p. 173), of JOHN FRENCH, of W., dated 1711-2, January 31, proved Mar. 20, 1713, wife, Susannah, it is very evident that he was the father of the last above, "Anne, wife of James Leith," and Richard, with JOHN FRENCH, Jr., (supra), omitted from the will. It also appears from the same and similar parallels that John French, Sr. was a son of the first RICHARD FRENCH, of N. J., of which there is important genealogy, (AM. & ENG. GEN., p. 433). The latter was that RICHARD FRENCH, first of Cambridge, Mass., who left in 1654, brothers of WILLIAM and JOHN FRENCH, of the same, and evidently rem. to N. J., and SAVAGE credits him with a son "certain JOHN," etc. (Vol. II, p. 207), and (CAMBRIDGE, Paige, pp. 551 and 2). They were playmates of the FRANCIS Family from the same place, (qui videt, supra).

    3. Your e-mail regarding the IGI equating the Middlesex Co., NJ, John French with John b 1651, son of Thomas and Sarah of Nether Heyford, was forwarded to me by a fellow NJ French researcher. There is no proof connecting these 2 lines - in fact, evidence is to the contrary. As a long time NJ French family researcher and descendant of John French, brick mason of Woodbridge, I am on a campaign to keep separate the W. Jersey line of Thomas French of Nether Heyford from that of the E. Jersey line of John French who first appears in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., on 20 August 1669 when the Woodbridge Town meeting granted him a 10 acre house lot and 5 acres of meadow, requiring that "he is bound here to live and to furnish the inhabitants bricks before strangers." The W. Jersey line (the "Nether Heyford" family) does not appear in New Jersey until 1680, when they came up the Delaware River to Burlington between Philadelphia and Trenton some 50 miles overland from Woodbridge (an unfriendly wilderness at that time). Woodbridge is much more distant by boat. The Nether Heyford family did have a son, John born 1651, who is listed by many as the same as John, brick mason, of Woodbridge. But, at age 17 or 18 in 1669, he was too young to have been granted land. I wish the connection would prove out because it would provide a great extension to my family line. But for the above reasons and more, I have to reject the connection. Barring solid yDNA matches (only mis-matches so far), those of us from the Woodbridge French line (John "Jr." and Richard - my line, the 2 sons of John, brick mason) will have to keep struggling with the origin of our family before Woodbridge. The early church records for the Woodbridge line are Presbyterian, none were Quaker. The next few generations of the Woodbridge lines mostly stayed in Middlesex, Essex/Union, and Morris Cos. of NJ or migrated to Steuben, Ontario/Yates, and Wyoming Cos. of NY. I have traced some 2000 descendants of a son of Richard and a fellow researcher a like number from a son of "John Jr." Jim Gunderson -----Original Message----- From: J. Is the IGI correct? If so, what is the proof of this relationship?

    1. John FRENCH, died in 1713 at Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ
    2. I wonder why it was assumed to be an error when a record listed John FRENCH and wife, Anne. Is it possible that their were 2 John FRENCH's living there in that time period? "In 1709-10, JOHN FRENCH and wife, ANNE, (err. for Susannah), were in the recs. at W., (vide, ante, PART ONE, p. 91), for (idem, p. PART TWO, p. 268), JOHN FRENCH, Jr. Aug. 4, 1705, m. Jan. 15, 1707; Mary, b. June 4, 1710; Sarah, b. Nov. 25, 1712, et al., (as later W. recs. show)." And below, our writer makes two questionable assumptions: 1) The John FRENCH of W. 1670 is the same John FRENCH of Staten Island mentioned in 1688 with wife Susannah. 2) Assumes Richard FRENCH and Thomas FRENCH of Burlington bef 1700 are "Apparently allied" [JOHN FRENCH] "First Settler of W. French of New York in WJ9S-X3 lists Thomas French AFN: GK6J-VX and Sara Wood AFN: GK6J-W4 as parents of John. Information from Charles Newton French says John is the brother of Thomas French/Jane Adkins. 1. Charles Newton French gives some hypotheses on the lineage of several unknown New Jersey Frenches. Thomas (A) b. Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire, England Thomas (1) m. Jane Atkins Thomas (2) m. Mary Allen Joseph (3) of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ Joseph (4) who m. Hannah Horn in 1749 and to include Francis (4) of New Gretna, NJ, and also son Aaron French (4), b. 1739, d. 1905 in PA. Charles writes about Aaron, and we quote: "It is said that he had two or more brothers, one of whom removed to NY, and another went south. The compiler believes that the latter was Francis of New Gretna, in south NJ [near Little Egg Harbor, and that Aaron and Francis were sons of Joseph of Shrewsbury], however, Aaron may have been son or grandson of John of Middlesex Co., whose descendant, unlike those of Richard, the other son of John of Woodbridge, have not been traced." (John of Woodbridge was the brother of Thomas (1) and Jane Atkins, Chart #20). Charles Newton French says the descendants of John (1), and Richard (2) have been traced. Does anyone know where? The information above gives more information that John is more than like a son of Thomas and Sara French. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2004 3:15 PM Subject: RE: [FRENCH-L] John FRENCH, died in 1713 at Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ > The IGI information may be in error. > > Based on information found in a document of East Jersey Deed records, dated > 12 Dec, 1687, John French, mason, and wife, Susanna, are from Staten Island. > There are 3 separate entries for this date and it appears he was setting up > his affairs in Staten Island, where he was selling his property, in > preparation for a move to East Jersey. (idem, p. 22). Myles Forster, then of N. Y. was the heir, suggesting kinship. Apparently allied, in the same records, sev. ref. are RICHARD FRENCH, and THOMAS FRENCH of BURLINGTON, bef. 1700. In 1709-10, JOHN FRENCH and wife, ANNE, (err. for Susannah), were in the recs. at W., (vide, ante, PART ONE, p. 91), for (idem, p. PART TWO, p. 268), JOHN FRENCH, Jr. Aug. 4, 1705, m. MARY BOWNE, (dau. of Judge James Bowne, and) sister of ELIZABETH, who m. JUDGE HENRY FREEMAN, (vide, ante, this PART, p. supra). Children: Susanna, b. June 11, 1706; William, b. Jan. 15, 1707; Mary, b. June 4, 1710; Sarah, b. Nov. 25, 1712, et al., (as later W. recs. show). A sister to the last above, JOHN FRENCH, Jr., was Anne, who m.

Based on information found in a document of East Jersey Deed records, dated 12 Dec, 1687, John French, mason, and wife, Susanna, are from Staten Island. There are 3 separate entries for this date and it appears he was setting up his affairs in Staten Island, where he was selling his property, in preparation for a move to East Jersey. He sold a Staten Island property to Peter Dassigney of Woodbridge, surgeon, and also gave him power of attorney for the management of his affairs on Staten Island. -----Original Message----- From: J. Michael Frost [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2004 1:00 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [FRENCH-L] John FRENCH, died in 1713 at Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ According to the IGI, the John FRENCH who was in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ as early as 1670, and who died there in 1713, was the same person as the John FRENCH who was the son of Thomas and Sara FRENCH, and who was born in 1651 in Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire, England. Is the IGI correct? If so, what is the proof of this relationship?
