Mary, I failed to list the source of Hannah who married George P. Lee. It was, most likely, Jenny LaMore who has been the source of most of my material on this line. She is a very experienced and thorough researcher and was the one who helped me when I first began many years ago. She is a descendant of Gideon's brother, Samuel C. French. If you have been following the discussion in the US, you would note that we have the line of Thomas FFRENCH from Nether Heyford, Northampton, back to the early 17th century. Should you come across references to this line a note would be most appreciated. Cheerio, Hugh

Hmmm, I wonder where I got that. I am not at home so don't have my "family" with me. I will check it out later. Mary, How did you indentify this Hannah? How do you know that she is a French and a daughter os Samuel and Molly? I don't think that I have this data. She was a widow by then, George had died between 1870 and 1880 in Henry County. All the census from 1850 to 1870 listed Hannah as being born in Tennessee and George as being born in North Carolina. After George died and on the 1880 Census, she was listed as living with her daughter and son in law. He was listed as being born in North Carolina, but that might be wrong. It listed her parents (Samuel Jr and Molly) as being born in North Carolina.
Yes, Beverly, my question was "Has anyone ever seen his Pension record from the NARA to indentfy him?" Thanks for posting it. Julia, I found Hannah French who married George P. Lee on the 1880 Henry County, Tennessee Census. I do believe that is correct. I am wondering something though, on one of the Census it listed Gideon French as being as 87 when he should have been 79 or 77. I am not sure about the age on that census, but if he was born somewhere between 1781-1786 then he would have been born in Georgia. I am not sure. But I did find that about Hannah French Lee. Thank You Mary
Julia, I found a tax list for 1785 in Wilkes County, Georgia, it has Samuel French on it. [WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA] EARLIEST TAX DIGEST (1785 REMNANT) Samuel French, 1 poll, 100 acres Wilkes Co. Page 171--CLARKE, ELIJAH and wife Hannah to Samuel French 100 acres on Clarks Fork. Mar. 18, 1786. Thank you Mary
I don't have my papers in front of me, Garland. 1783 sounds a little early, but may be correct if you say so. And, yes, this is Samuel, Jr. and wife, Molly. I told you that they owned a jet plane. <g> Samuel, Jr. was most likely born in Anson Co., NC about 1755, moved to Rutherford Co., NC then to GA then to SC then to Montgomery Co., TN then to Stewart Co., TN. I'm just starting to play with the matching FRENCH's from the DNA testing. This is what I show for Samuel To NC/SC: The earliest white European settlers began coming down the Great Wagon Road around 1740. They were predominantly Scots-Irish and German immigrants, who had come to America in search of land and opportunity. There were also a few English settlers, descendants of earlier New England colonists, who moved southward where land was more plentiful. Stalwart and hardy, these early settlers had a hard life to forge in what was then known as the Backcountry. Early roads were few and hard to travel, making communication and trade in and out of the region both erratic and unpredictable. Travel that did occur was often stymied by wet weather. IMIGRATION: related FRENCH family/families arrive in North America before 1748 FRENCH --Generation 1. Great Wagon Road migration begins Samuel born abt 1727 - found on Anson Co., NC tax list in 1748 Joseph born bef 1737 - found on Pacolet River; NC/SC Survey/deed in 1773 Unknown(s) - remain in NY/NJ area -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, July 29, 2004 7:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [FRENCH-L] Samuel French and Sons of Anson, Rutherford, NC, SC, TN Julia or anyone, Which French's (Samuel Sr, Jr, went to SC and where and when.
