    3. There are several Moore's listed on the same 1790 census I mentioned earlier along with what I posted too. One was a John Moore but the others I could not read very well. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2004 12:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FRENCH-L] William French/Sebring You know, Judith, you keep sending this stuff and, finally, something rang a bell. When I first began researching my MOORE line I only knew my ggrandfather, William Co. Moore (whose mother was Mary French sister of Lafford). At that time, of course, I didn't know who William's mother was. All I had was the family bible which gave William C. Moore's birth and marriage and says that William C. Moore's mother, brother, wife and sister all died in Cape Girardeau Co., MO in the year 1839 and all buried in the same place. Afterwards, William took his children back to TN. In searching the court records of Cape Girardeau Co., MO, I was able to find that William C. Moore was executor to the estate of Morgan MOORE and figured that he was the brother, however, no mention of the female deaths. However, William C. Moore was guardian to Seabring children. I could never prove the connection and if William's sister, Jane had married a Seabring, but it just now hit me after all those years. This is the French / Seabring connection that has followed them all that way. I must find time to dig out all those files. Julia

    3. Scott, they are definitely related, but no proof yet. Richard's and William's names are on various land deeds as joint owners. Also, when Richard was put in jail in about 1654, William cared for and brought up Richard's son Samuel from age 1 to adulthood. The relationship hasn't been determined yet. On another issue: So, you're wondering if William was the grandson of Jacob of Assington. Jacob had 5 sons: William, Jacob, Thomas, John, and Robert. The William in question was b. ca. 1603. His father could have been William, could not have been Jacob because he died before 1603, could not have been Thomas because Thomas didn't have a son named William, John's child was born much later than 1603, and Robert was too young. The only possibility then is William who could be the father of William. The dates and places make this a real possibility. The William in question even named one of his sons Jacob, presumedly after his grandfather. Records in the Assington, Twinstead, Halstead area in England need to be researched. 1. THEORY on Naming of Lafford FRENCH
    2. All, The following is a theory and not substantiated. PROBLEM. Find the source of the name, Lafford, in Lafford FRENCH, b. 1753 NJ. ASSUMPTION. Lafford was the first born son of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH therefore would most likely be named for a family member. First searching back on the ancestry of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH we find: FRENCH, Joseph (Sr) and wife, Allee. paternal grand parents Thomas and wife, Mary ALLEN, paternal great grand parents ALLEN, Judah and Mary WOOLEY, paternal great, great grand parents HORN, Simon and wife, Sarah OLDEN, maternal grand parents Simon and wife, Rebecca REA, maternal great grand parents OLDEN, William and Elizabeth GILES, maternal great grand parents REA, Jushua and Sarah WATERS, maternal great great grand parents GILES, James and Elizabeth TIDD, maternal great great grand parents There does not seem to be a family connection to the name Lafford for a first son among the names shown above. There is one obvious area that is unsearched and that is the family of Allee, wife of Joseph FRENCH. Allee would be a grand parent and a logical source for the naming of a grandchild. The problem is to connect Allee to a SURNAME which has a first name of Lafford (sp.). We know by earlier research that there was a Leffert SEBRING (sp.) associated with the FRENCH family in NJ. At first cut this possibility should be explored by examining the SEBRING surname. Best regards, Hugh

    3. Descendants of Noah French 1754-1843 from updated file located on Ancestry.com updated Sep 6, 2003 Entry 1629 by Jan-Marie McCabe. Taken from Jan McCabe 10-23-03: We're still trying to identify the parents of Noah. Per his military records, at the age of about 16, Noah served as an express rider during the Revolutionary War. In these records, Noah's father is listed as John. However, one of Noah's grandsons, Zerah French (1827 - 1890), identifies Noah's father as William French. Perhaps Zerah was actually referring to Noah's grandfather, rather than his father. Because of information that connects Noah to Essex County, Union County, and Morris County, NJ, we've been trying to work back from Noah and down from John French (the brick mason) and his wife, Susannah of Woodbridge, who were in Middlesex County as early as 1680. John (c.1650 - 1713) and Susannah were from Staten Island before being in Woodbridge. Many of John and Susannah's descendants were in Essex County and Union County (including David French (1747-1838) who fought during the Revolutionary War. Other male descendants of John and Susannah also fought during the Revolutionary War. Because this military connection seems at odds with a Quaker heritage, it appears that this family is a completely separate French line, distinct from the Quaker line of Thomas (b 1611 in England). At this time, I'm particularly interested in William French, who married Antie Sebring in Middlesex County, NJ in 1742. Antie Sebring had a brother Leffert, who posted the marriage bond with William French when he obtained the marriage license in Middlesex County. I believe this William is descended from John (the brickmason) and Susannah French. Lafford (born in 1753) would fit nicely into this family, as he would have been named for his uncle. Also, Lafford names his son William. This theory would then resolve what seems to be a strange DNA connection from the "military" Frenchs to the Quaker Frenchs. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a male "French" descendant of Noah French to participate in the DNA project. I'd gladly contribute to the cost if one could be located. I'm still looking -- I've found many descendants -- just no direct male Frenchs. But, even if I find someone, this won't help to prove or disprove the above theory.

Lafford's pension application reveals a birth in NJ. NJ records substantiate this fact with date (1753) and parents, Joseph (II) and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH. The 1749 marriage of Joseph (II) and Hannah is also recorded in NJ. It is the link to Joseph (I) and Allee as parents of Joseph (II) that is the weak point. Best regards, Hugh

    3. Al, YES!! William was the son of John "J." French and Mary Ackerman French. His siblings were Jefferson A. French, Indiana French, George Washington French, John S. French, Lafayette Porter French, James French, Loring French, and Mary French. There were probably at least two other daughters of John and Mary that I have not found. This is the family I have been researching for several years. John "J." French was my Great Great Great Grandfather. I have not been able to located his family back in New York, Vermont, or New Hampshire. The reason for the quotes around his middle initial is I'm uncertain whether it is an "I", or "J", or "T".
