    2. Both Samuel and Samuel, Jr. had a son named John. The elder John died about 1796 in Montgomery Co., TN which is right over the state line. 2. In reading this website I see two names that tie my Samuel French line to this area. One being Lessenby, as Samuel's grandson (son of John), Joesph married a Lessenby and the Capt. Berry as both Lafford and Samuel, Jr. had a son named, Berry. 2. This is amazing that I thought that I had looked at all records of Anson Co., NC and I never saw Joseph there. If I had, it wouldn't have taken me 9 years and DNA to prove that Samuel was related to Joseph. 1. NC/SC Joseph FRENCH clues found in deed records - - -
    2. Twelve Mile Creek deeds were shown in Ninety Six District in 1790. A Twelve Mile Creek deed in 1815 is shown in Pendleton District. Since the first 2 land deeds reflect the same date -- 1790/02/09 -- it is probable we had a father and a son, both named Joseph FRENCH. To own land, the son is probably at least 21 and born no later than 1769. If we assume the father was at least 16 when this son was born, the father was born no later than 1753. Conclusions: 1) This is not Lafford's brother Joseph & his son [or] 2) The birth order for Joseph, brother of Lafford is in error [or] 3) This is the Joseph French's claimed to be Lafford's father & brother. 4) There is a 2nd Joseph FRENCH family living in the Pendleton Dist And, based on the info in the 3rd deed below, a Joseph FRENCH may be living in Pendleton Dist as late as 1816. ============================= 1790 - Joseph French on Twelve Mile Creek, 72 acres Series Number: S213190 Volume: 0025 Page: 00036 Item: 02 Date: 1790/02/09 Description: FRENCH, JOSEPH, PLAT FOR 72 ACRES ON BRANCH OF TWELVE MILE CREEK, NINETY SIX DISTRICT, SURVEYED BY ROBERT PRINCE. 2. J. Michael Frost
    3. Here's some information from Colonial New Jersey Source Records, 1600s-1700s [database online], Genealogy.com: "1670 Dec. 30. Do [Patent]. to John ffrench of Woodbridge mason for: 1, 10 acres of upland on the West of Vaquellins [Vauquellin's?] Hill, along Israel Thorncum's meadow; 2, five acres of meadow, not yet laid out. Marg[ina]l Note: 'This pattent is transported [?] to Robert Vauquellin.' "1670 Dec. 31. Affidavit of John French, that he has conveyed land and meadow, mentioned in his patent to Robert Vauquellin." I have never before heard of a land patent being "transported." Does the marginal note mean that the land patent was transferred? Why did John FRENCH convey the land to Robert VAUQELLIN so soon after John acquired title to the land? What was the relationship, if any, between John FRENCH and Robert VAUQUELLIN, other than that of grantor and grantee of 15 acres of land in NJ? Mike Frost

    2. The location on the Peedee River is where my Samuel French was and Tryon County is the part that later became SC. However, I scanned all the names on that petition and didn't find any that looked familiar as being those who were in NC in all the documents that I have read of the time that Samuel French was in Anson on the Peedee River. The only names that I recognize are all from the Isle of Wight, VA area, and then to the Bertie, Nash, Edgecombe, Craven area. Like Culpepper, Braswell, Thompson, Wright, and Theophulis Williams (who is one of my ancestors). Julia In a message dated 8/15/2004 6:34:44 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I have reviewed a transcript of NC Regulator Petition of 1769 and find only two FRENCH names, Neal and Joseph, as earlier reported. The names are listed early on the petition and Neal and Joseph are within a line of each other but not adjacent. There are three columns of names. Neal is in the first column and Joseph in the third. There is no county identification among the listed names. Because Anson was a forerunner of Rutherford Co. which later (1779) became the home for some FRENCHs, it is reasonable to think that the area was in Anson and was considered to include what later became the North part of South Carolina about 1815. What I am suggesting is that the FRENCHs of the area may well have been considered North Carolinians. Why then did some serve in the SC militia (Roebuck's Regt.)? It may well have been which recruiter visited this ill defined area first. Some thoughts, Hugh

    1. URL for transcription of Regulators Petition on Anson County, NC site
    2. I believe the Regulators Petition, signed by a Neal FRENCH & Joseph FRENCH was from the citizens of the "old" Anson County. URL below for those who want to read the entire document. David's Joseph FRENCH, lived in Onslow County on the Atlantic and their migration was northward to Jones & Craven County. It is doubtful that this Neal & Joseph FRENCH were the Onslow FRENCH's. As I understand it, the NC east coast residents rather viewed the NC "back country" citizens as near savages. Onslow, Jones nor Craven would not have been part of the "old" Anson County. In 1750 Anson County was formed from Bladen County. At that time, it reached all the way to the Mississippi River. . . . The following counties were once part of Anson County: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Graham, Guilford, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Montgomery, Polk, Randolph, Richmond, Rockingham, Rowan, Rutherford, Scotland, Stanly, Stokes, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Tryon, Union, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, Yancey. 1. Some parts of SC were in NC - border not fully surveyed until 1815
    2. Samuel FRENCH and James FRENCH shown in 1763 - on tax list of Anson Co. SOUTH CAROLINA - REGULATOR PARDON - 1771 -- no FRENCH name included. Area later known as Rutherford Co. was once part of Anson County -- The northern areas of some SC counties that border NC were once considered to be in Anson County too. When the NC-SC line was later surveyed, (after 1771) these areas became part of SC. ". . . . the territory began to be known as North and South Carolina. The northern territory was made a separate colony in 1712 and had its own governors until 1829. This boundary begun in 1735, but was not established, nor fully surveyed until 1815." By: Paul R. Do you have a Province where this petition was originated? The counties seen to be the same as those found in NC. This was just before the Regulator Revolution which was put down by Gov. Tyron at the Battle of Alamance (Orange Co.), NC in 1771. Apparently the FRENCHs moved to SC after this incident. There was a group of Quakers who organized Wrightsboro, GA (on the South Carolina border) about this time. Best regards, Hugh
