    1. Samuel French - NC, SC, GA, TN
    2. For anyone researching Samuel French of North Carolina (FG103, French DNA) : 1785/05/24.....plat for 276 acres on branch of Saluda River, 96th District, SC. 1786/03/18.....deed for 100 acres on Clarks fork, from Elijah and Hanna Clark., Wilkes, GA 1790 Census, Greenville, SC, Samuel French males +16 males -16 Females slaves 5 1 7 2 1798-1800...Samuel, Sam, Thomas and John are in Montgomery County TN.Tax Lists. Does anyone have information or theory about who is who in SC and GA? Note the five males over 16 in the 1790 Greenvile census. Who might they have been? Also, assuming these are the subject Samuel(s), is there a SC connection because of relationship with Joseph French? It appears that Thomas French, son of Samuel Sr., brother of Samuel Jr. went to Tennessee about 1785 ( Thomas in 1787 Davidson Co. TN Tax List) and was involved in surveying middle Tennessee areas for North Carolina military reservation. Father and brothers followed in the 1798 time frame. Correct? Appreciate your response. Garland French

    1. 1790 census - Joseph Jun & Joseph Sen -- curious
    2. 1790 Census: Pendleton SC Listed together Joseph Land Jun 1 1 1 Joseph Land Sen 1 1 3 1790 Census Greenville SC Baylis Earle 2 1 1 - 4 [slaves] Baylis Earle is mentioned on the 1790 Twelve Mile Creek plat for Joseph FRENCH Sr. Curious -- I wonder if the enumerator failed to enter the surname FRENCH on his entries for Pendleton SC -- Could the enumerator been at their "land" and finding them not home made the entries anyway since he knew the family? Also noted that the Greenville County Census wasn't subscribed until 10th day of April 1791. I wonder if the Pendleton Census was also this late.

    1. a little off topic -- 'Directions of the Road' - from NC to IN early 1800's
    2. Directions from Surry Co., NC to southern IN -- early 1800's Originally posted on another list - - - Copied from "Gone But Not Forgotten, An Anthology Of Fact & Folklore" by Mildred Uland. Page 50 The History of the Burcham Family "In File 20/1 on the 3rd floor (court room) at the Bloomfield (Indiana) Courthouse the following information was found by Jean Cain. Two receipts for inheritance from John Burcham's estate received by Hannah Burcham (daughter) and John Denny (son-in-law) are on file. On the back of these receipts, which are torn in two (maybe due to scarcity of paper at that time) are these directions which were probably used by the Burcham family when they came from Surrey County: 'Directions of the Road from hear to Indiana first to Grason Courthouse (This could be Independence, VA. Grayson Co.) thence to cross at Joneses ford thence to Blue Spring thence to Abbington (Abingdon, VA.) thence to the Boat yeard (evidently came part way by boat - down the Holston?) thence to Grinsville thence to Bean Station (near Tate Springs, TN.) thence to Clinch Mountain thence to Cumberland Mountain thence to Rock dafel (this is Rock Castle County) thence to Mount Virling (Mt. Vernon, KY, Rock Castle Co.) thence to Crab Orchard thence to Standford thence to Danville thence to Harodsburgh thence to Shelbyville (Shelbyville) thence to Middletown thence to Lewsville (Louisville) thence to Albany (New Albany, IN.) thence to Greensville (on US 150 Floyd Co. - direct route to Orange Co.) thence to Beeks Mill (Becks Mill SW of Salem, IN in Washington, Co.)'

    1. RE: [FRENCH-L] Three Joseph FRENCH families identified in the NC/SC area 1775-1800
    2. "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose was published in 1876, compiled by Bryan from notes made on "scraps of paper" by Mr. Rose as he rode about the counties and visited with the residents. The information it contains is what elderly children, grandchildren and g grandchildren recalled about the older family members. I believe the path of migration was Kentucky, then into Tennessee and on into Missouri. Why would a widow move with her children? Perhaps because her father and brothers were moving and she went with them. Perhaps she had remarried and moved with her new husband. The following are listed in sequence on the 1790 Census, Pendleton, SC: William French 2 2 5 Isaac Gregory 1 1 2 Cap't Benj. Clark 1 1 3 - 3 [slaves] Henry Clark 2 2 1 - 7 [slaves] and listed later we find Simon 1 1 1 1800 Census - Greenville, SC listed in sequence are Henry Clark Jun., Joseph King, Henry Clark Snr and a few names later we find Isaac Gregory with numerous EARLE family members also listed in Greenville SC. The younger William FRENCH was included in the Pendleton, SC enumeration in 1800. Henry Clark died 1823 in Christian Co., KY --his will mentions daughter Mary FRENCH and was witnessed by Pinkney FRENCH. Names wife Sarah Clark, Other daughters: Susannah Wheeler, Mary Ann Whiteside, Sarah Davis also names Hester Finley, daughter of deceased son Benjamin, and her husband John P. Finley. Other sons: Isaac, John, Henry, -- grandaughter Jane Clark. Administrator, son John. Simon FRENCH settled in Christian Co., KY and some report he married Mary Ann CLARK, b. 1773 in Tryon Co., NC. His first entry on the Christian County KY land grant record is 1799: French, Simon 180 [acres] 3 page 311 3-26-1799 Christian [county] W Fk Red R [West fork of Red River]. Henry's son Isaac CLARK turns up later in Montgomery Co.,MO and other CLARK-FRENCH marriages are mentioned in the Bryon/Rose book. Henry Clark [reported by a Clark researcher] was b. 8 Oct 1732 in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ and in Bryan & Rose we learn the CLARK descendants believed he had immigrated from Scotland. The CLARK family may belong to the group of Scots who went to Ireland and from there immigrated to North America. Did William's widow remove to Warren Co., TN? Perhaps. Perhaps she stayed in Christian Co. KY -- perhaps she married again -- perhaps she died. "Goodspeed, History of Tennessee, Warren County" lists Hughs FRENCH among settlers who settled in Warren County between 1810-1815.

    1. Re: [FRENCH-L] Three Joseph FRENCH families identified in the NC/SC area 1775-1800
    2. In a message dated 8/17/04 7:16:01 PM, [email protected] writes: << 1800 Census-Spartanburg SC: Betsey FRENCH, age 26-45, is listed next to Lafford. Appears to be a widow. With 5 children under 10, her husband died 1798-1800 timeframe. Lafford's brother William reportedly died in this time period and his wife moved to Warren Co. East Tennessee some time after his death. >> __________ J. This report of William's death and his widows movement to Warren Co., TN is carried in William S. Bryan and Robert Rose, "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," p. 329. It was in a discussion of the origins of Hugh and Sally (French) FRENCH (children of brothers, William and Simon) then in Calloway Co., MO after 1820. I had found a William FRENCH in Warren Co., KY and later in Wilson Co., TN (died 1808) whom I thought to be William, son of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH. This appears not to be the case, since Betsy FRENCH, widow, has been found in SC in 1800. The 5 children she is enumerated in the census is consistent with the known minor children I carry in my data. I also carry two adult children, Jane and Hugh. It is known that Jane m. John DENTON, but where is not known (prob. KY). Hugh m. his cousin, Sally, daughter of Simon and Mary (Clark) FRENCH in KY in 1814. Hugh and Sally were in MO by 1820. It now appears that William's widow, Betsy, came to Warren Co., TN with her family including Hugh after the 1800 SC census. Hugh, the oldest son, was by 1812 the head of household as he is listed in the 1812 Tax List, Warren Co., TN living near the DENTONs. It can be assumed that Betsy was resident in his household with the rest of his minor siblings. For Hugh to go to KY and marry Sally in 1814 must assume that Betsy, his mother, probably died, thus releasing him to move away and marry. Unfortunately, no 1810 USC TN exists for the area. Your thoughts. Best regards, Hugh
