The IGI (International Genealogical Index) can be found on-line at the Morman (Latter Day Saints) Family Search.org website. A while back there was a short discussion about whether something found in the IGI index could be in error. I have noticed that some of our FRENCH researchers regard an IGI entry as a primary source, apparently believing anything found in the IGI index can be regarded as an acceptable "source" requiring no additional research before adding it to their family tree. Although the IGI is a very useful tool for the genealogist, it is an index only and should not be considered a source which "proves" an entry on one's family tree. The IGI includes Private Patron submissions (Individual's family tree information) and extracts from the films of Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts. Quoting from TAMESIDE LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY "Those entries from private patron submissions are to be viewed with extreme caution. The rules governing proof of ancestry for church members are not as rigorous as those required by family historians, and were indeed interpreted with a considerable degree of licence, especially in the early days. Be especially careful with entries that say 'Relative' or 'About'. In the past church members went about collecting as many entries of the same surname in an area as possible, without proving any relationship between them. Also having found a marriage of their ancestors in a certain place they could assume that he/she had been baptised in the same area about 25 years previously, again without any real proof at all."

Okay, Freda, but to remind everyone that this is the Family Record of Lafford French, and not the Samuel French line, although, Samuel and Lafford are related. I happen to be descended from both, Samuel French of Anson and Lafford's sister, Mary French, who married William Moore in Rutherford Co., NC in 1781. BTW, the Moore DNA has proven that they were Scottish and came from Ireland. First of all let me say that the Bible record is not a copy of the original, but typewritten, but was accepted by the DAR. They didn't have copy machines so readily available back when this was done. Mable Clark's application was submitted in 1942 and the Bible sent in by her when she obtained it in 1960, as she wanted her application to be correct. The DAR sent me more than the Bible record and one thing is a certified transcription of a letter from James French in Marshall Co., AL to his daughter, Love Ann Berry, written in 1861. And a narrative, from Mable Clark, of the French family which states in whose possession some other family bibles are. Everyone who wants a copy of all this, let me know and I will divide the $30.00 cost among all of us. It is a total of 8 pages, including the letter to me from the DAR. Good job, in finding him. I agree that the Colonial Dames application should be very interesting. It appears that Mable was very careful about documenting everything. I have a friend who may be a member, I will see if she can order this application for us. There are three Colonial Dames Societies.
