Still very frustrated. The more information posted here, all the blogs, etc. and I get more and more confused. My sites, one for my local Genealogical Society, and one for my county Cemetery Preservation Group, have been up for quite some time. I have had passwords for both sites approved, and I still get message that I am not authorized to access them. What gives? For some of us old fogies, we were very spoiled by using the defunct on line editor, and when those went away, tried learning the ftp protocols, and even with personal local webpage techs help, could not even get file zilla to work. Then the sites were down for almost 7 months, and now downloading the latest updated file zilla, still stuck. Surely there is a better online file manage that could be part of rootsweb again. Seems even the techy people are having difficulty with their websites, and they know way more than I do! What IS the problem???? Sent from my iPhone
Wilma, All your pages will need to maintained or created "offline" using a text editor such as Notepad, or a more user friendly (and free) one such as Notepad++. There are also free WYSIWYG text editors available - Kompozer is one that has been mentioned on this list in the past week. Alternatively, the SeaMonkey (Firefox derivative browser) has a maintained WYSIWYG editor known as Composer included with it. Most text editors will provide a means of checking files opened in your text editor in your default browser when working on them. FileZilla is the File Transfer Protocol utility that is used to upload/download your files to/from the server. I can assure you that FileZilla will work, provided it is set-up correctly, and the following pages should be used to do that:- https://sites.rootsweb.com/~pasher/ http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html NOTE: If you receive a password from RootsWeb, you have a limited time to activate it in your FTP utility, e.g. FileZilla. Check the details in the above listed pages. Barry On 18/08/2018 13:39, Wilma Fields wrote: > Still very frustrated. If you could give us a few more details we may be able to help further What is the new url of your sites - that is the restored ones? It should be something like this: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~yourusername/ - similar to the one Barry gave in the previous answer. Are you sure the pages you want have actually been restored? If you could also copy what exactly you have put into Filezilla to make it connect. And then what exactly the error reply from Filezilla was. Reply to my email if you wish. I have tried and gotten access to my smaller site. After editing and saving our meeting date, and both showing in file zilla and getting the successfully uploaded, it still does not show in the public view— just the old one from 2017. How can I find exactly where on my rootsweb site this update was uploaded to? What program are you using to do the editing? You do know that you can't edit html with Filezilla, don't you? Patricia :) will give you an idea of a html editor. Page Breeze (free) I use. Wilma, when you have Filezilla open and ready to publish the new page, make sure the old page shows in the right hand pane of Filezilla. Make sure the new page is showing in the left hand pane. DO both files have the same name? If so when you right click the new file and select upload, you should receive a message that gives you a choice of having the new file replace the old file. Select OK and the new file should overwrite the old file. File names are case sensitive so Meeting Dates.html is not the same as meeting dates.html or meeting-dates.html. I would also avoid file names with spaces. Use a hyphen to separate your words. I see where I copied the wrong updated code and repeated the original code. I am not home as my oldest grandson will be leaving for his 2nd year of College in the morning, and family is having a get together. So, I cannot give the correct code for the update. Yeah! I do have front page and one link updated!! Now any ideas why link would not work for a .pdf file? This one needs updated monthly. Do I need to change the url? For example my original file was named 2017jul. The new file would be 2018aug. Now both files would have to have the same name, so did I mess up when I renamed the original file to 2018aug in the option in File Zilla, and if so, if I rename it to the original name, would the link work again? Or is it easier to change the url by changing the part with the year and month? Any links to your pages need to be made in Notetab on your page. Change the name of the link on YOUR page then publish/upload the new corrected page AND the file in links to. Changing the file name using FIlezilla only changes the name of the file itself on the server. It does not change the path to the link on your page.
I have it fixed and working. Thanks to everyone for all their help. Appreciate it so much!
