Okay, I'm trying again. I'm skittish about moving or double-clicking anything, since I don't want to mess it up. Here's what I have on the filezilla screen: Left side: Local Site: 13 files and 32 directories (By the way, while I'm typing this, I get "network error. Software caused connection abort." But both sides, local site and remote site are still there, showing files and directories.) Right side: 4 files and 8 directories, including index.html and neil.html. The last two, under Filetype, say Firefox. So, what should I do to proceed? Does any of this indicate that something is wrong? What should I click on and what should I avoid? -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com] Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2018 10:30 PM To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 171 Send FREEPAGES-HELP mailing list submissions to freepages-help@rootsweb.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to freepages-help-request@rootsweb.com You can reach the person managing the list at freepages-help-owner@rootsweb.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of FREEPAGES-HELP digest..." You may or may not have done a download, which you may or may not have wanted to do. A few suggestions if I may. 1) Always keep a relatively current copy of your entire site on something other than your local hard drive. A flash drive is my external media of choice. 2) Never double-click on *anything* in Filezilla. Use right-click followed by Upload or Download or whatever. That way you will always know exactly what is going to happen. I second Charlie's congratulations on the progress you have made. Remember the difference between download and upload. download = you are copying files from the server to your computer. upload = you are copying files from your computer to the server (so they will be displayed on line.) >On the top of the Filezilla log on the left side, part way down it >first said Connected to sitesuser.rootsweb.com >I tried double clicking on site line near the bottom and it said >Starting download of (boyerlinks, etc.) >Then it said Skipping download of the same >Then File transfer skipped >Then Disconnected from server >Then network error: software caused connection abort > >So, wait: Did I want a download? >I now have all my files listed in both places: Local Site on the >left, Remote site on the right, but now nothing is happening. Those of us on the list can't answer your question. Are there files on the server that you don't have on your computer? You will need to download them so you have archived copies. Have you updated files on your computer that you need to copy to the server so your most recent updates will be displayed on line? Then you will need o upload those files. Whether you need to download or upload a particular file, make sure that you are looking at the same (sub) directory in both the local and remote sides in Filezilla, so your files are copied to the place you want them to be. Several things still need to be included to complete the full installation of SSL encryption. First is to automatically switch URL entries such as http://sites.rootsweb.com/~websiteid<http://sites.rootsweb.com/%7Ewebsiteid>, sites.rootsweb.com/~websiteid, to https://sites.rootsweb.com/~websiteid<https://sites.rootsweb.com/%7Ewebsiteid> when entered as a URL in the web browser. For now unless you enter the https:// when you enter the URL to view your website the web browsers are showing the websites as UNSECURE. Next I noticed that the https:// is NOT being carried forward to sub-directories. Each of my different family pages are in a sub-directory under my main ~websiteid directory therefore these sub-directories are being shown as UNSECUREs. I’m sure both of these are possible as I manage several other web sites on different hosting services and they both work as suggested above. Still not able to access my military web site under military_html sub-directory but the last I remember was that this would come later. Again I do appreciate Rootsweb getting my genealogy web site back on line. Other then the SSL encryption items above my ~wlsetzer web site is back on line and updated. Tom Pick's site contains data on births and marriages that was collected from microfilms of church records in the Eifel area of Germany. Tom Pick passed away a few years ago, but the data remained at his freepages site until RootsWeb was taken down. Before RootsWeb was taken down this site was used extensively by genealogist studying the Eifel area. I have an ~eifel site that was restored, and it contains a few links to other Eifel sites. However, the bulk of the ~eifel site is a name index into Tom Pick's ~pick site. I requested that Tom's site be restored, and I explained in my request that the owner is no longer living and that the site contains information used by many researchers. The site has not been restored, and I have not receive an email from RootsWeb acknowledging that they received my request, nor have I received an email indicating whether my request has been rejected. I ask that RootsWeb please restore this site. A couple of years before Tom Pick passed away he sent me a letter expressing his concern that his data might disappear after he dies. Please don't allow that to happen. Mixed Content means a combination of http and https. From research I did on this last month, it is not as horrid as they are making it sound. It is not truly unsafe. It only means our sites have http pages, while the host has made top level into https (e.g. www.rootsweb.com). ------------------------------ Subject: Digest Footer -To contact the freepages-help list administrator, send an email to freepages-help-admin@rootsweb.com. -To post a message to the freepages-help mailing list, send an email to freepages-help@rootsweb.com. __________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to freepages-help-leave@rootsweb.com with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and the body of the email with no additional text. ------------------------------ End of FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 13, Issue 171 ***********************************************

Neil, to upload or download files, the left and right hand panes must match. You don't want to upload walthamCems.html to the boyer military subdirectory or visa versa. We (and I mean all the people on the list who have tried to help) have explained to you everything you need to do to upload your updated files to the server, or to download files from the server to your computer so you can update them for future uploading. At this point, you are going to have to test the waters yourself, and then report back to us whatever errors you may have encountered. The members of this list are a wonderful resource, but none of us are there, looking over your shoulder and able to correct you. You have to do it yourself, then tell us what error message you receive. Hopefully, if you review everything you have been told, you will be able to update your site without any problems at all.
