I think I'm making good progress with the good help of many people. I am now at the stage where I on the right side of the Filezilla screen. This shows: /boyerlinks/genealogy_html/boyer_easton Inside are 20 files and one directory. On the top of the Filezilla log on the left side, part way down it first said Connected to sitesuser.rootsweb.com I tried double clicking on site line near the bottom and it said Starting download of (boyerlinks, etc.) Then it said Skipping download of the same Then File transfer skipped Then Disconnected from server Then network error: software caused connection abort So, wait: Did I want a download? I now have all my files listed in both places: Local Site on the left, Remote site on the right, but now nothing is happening. Advice needed: Did I skip some vital step? Should I double-click the files on the right to download them? Or should I now Upload the files on the left side? I'm confused about there I am. You must judiciously substitute your names for hers in order to be able to see *your* directories and files. Just one example of what I'm talking about is in her first thumbnail image. Where it says "gearyfamily" you must substitute your own "User:" text. The "Host" field however applies to anyone's site. And so on for each case - two places on the next thumbnail (Default local directory and Default remote directory), etc. And I agree that a new computer would not help you. In fact, it would likely complicate things for you because you would then need to first get all your current local website files moved to the new computer in addition to coping with Filezilla. And BTW, Pat Geary's very last thumbnail illustrates the "File Explorer-like" panes above both the local and remote lists of directories and files that I droned on about earlier. Have you been able to enable those in the View tab yet? You should go back to Patricia Geary's - http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html ... and examine her gearfamily directories - top right FileZilla pane. Well, Barry, on my computer, I don't see what you see: "I don't see this, as you wrote: "The first directory is genealogy_html, which leads to all her sub-directories." No, on my computer, I just see Pat's red-border heading : "publishing your Rootsweb Site with Filezilla." The top right box that I see says "Geary Family Directories," and the right-arrow takes me not to computer directories but simply to a Google list of websites, including phone "directories", of all things, and the Geary family pool schedule. No, I don't want that. I would like to see "boyerlinks" in that box, which you said I should find, but it's just not there. I think my computer has some crossed wires. Should I get a new computer? Neil You wrote: When you open FileZilla, you should see boyerlinks in the top right pane. Clicking on that should open up genealogy_html and subsequently your boyer, jackson and waltman directories in the pane below. Clicking on the appropriate directory will reveal the files in it. Should I get a new computer? No, as Barry said, you don't need a new computer. To clear up any confusion, there are two Pat's who respond frequently on this list. One is me -- I am Pat Asher, and I respond to questions when I think I can help. Second is Pat Geary, who is one of our list experts on Filezilla. She has an instruction page on connecting to your restored RootsWeb site at <http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html> On your computer, set up Filezilla to connect to your account at usersites.rootsweb.com following her instructions. Note the host/server name for your FTP connection using Filezilla, is not the same as the server name you connect to when viewing your site using your browser (that is an http:// connection). The http:// URL for your site starts with sites.rootsweb.com/ Test your setup to see if Filezilla connects you. Ignore your local file pane for the moment and verify that you have connected to the server using Filezilla. If you are connected HOORAY, you are half way there. If the connection is not successful, go back to Pat Geary's instructions, review and double check your settings and try again. In the right hand pane, you should see the files you have uploaded to boyerlinks/genealogy_html/ These will include the directories containing your various family files, e.g. /Waltman /boyer_orwigsburg etc. Once you have verified you are able to connect to the server with Filezilla and see the files you have already uploaded, you can change your local directory so the files you want to upload appear in the left hand pane. But you should do that while you are NOT connected. Close your connection in Filezilla then follow the instructions I sent previously to identify your local directory so it shows up in the left hand pane. I will repeat them here: 1) Open Filezilla, but do not connect to your site yet. 2) Click the Site Manager icon in the upper left hand corner on the toolbar. 3) If you have more than one, highlight the name of your Freepages site in the left hand pane. 4) Click the Advanced tab. 5) Under Default local directory, click the Browse button. 6) The Browse button opens Windows Explorer. Navigate to the directory where you have saved your web site files on your computer. Click the Select Folder button. 7) The location of your files on your computer should now appear in the Default Local Directory box. 8) Click OK. I'm going to add one more suggestion. Since you have directories for various family lines, create one directory to hold all the directories for all of the family lines you have researched. You can call it anything you wish, e.g. MyWebs, Websites, Families, whatever. Just put them all in one place so when you browse your directories to find the one you want to open in Filezilla, it will contain all of your family subdirectories: C:\Users\Jake\Documents\Websites will contain the Waltman subdirectory, the Boyer subdirectory, the Jackson subdirectory, etc. Then, when you connect, you double click (for example) the Waltman subdirectory in the right hand pane to open it (so you will be uploading to that directory); then open the Waltman subdirectory in the left hand pane to find the file you want to upload/update. Those of us on the list can't answer your question. Are there files on the server that you don't have on your computer? You will need to download them so you have archived copies. Have you updated files on your computer that you need to copy to the server so your most recent updates will be displayed on line? Then you will need o upload those files. Whether you need to download or upload a particular file, make sure that you are looking at the same (sub) directory in both the local and remote sides in Filezilla, so your files are copied to the place you want them to be.
