    3. Hi Neal, I think everyone who responded has given you some good advice! I thought I would just mostly ask a few questions in the hope that you may find the source of your problem by trying to answer them. I think you are on the very doorstep of success! For some of the questions, I've copied what you said and added my questions interspersed with your text. "I have in my Filezilla program the Local Site on the left pane, including genealogy_html, with a dozen web pages underneath it. On the Remote site, right pane, under genealogy_html, I have basically the same list." 1. When you say "a dozen web pages", do you see file names that end with either .htm or .html? You *can* upload whole directories, but you don't really need that complication right now. 2. Above the list of (hopefully) .htm or .html files, do you see a directory structure? If not, go to the View tab and click on "Local directory tree". This allows you to see above the list of file names exactly where you are on your local hard drive. Same thing applies to View and "Remote directory tree" for the host side. "Now what? I open Kompozer, pick a file and make minimal changes (e.g., today's date in the upper right corner), save the page. Then I close Kompozer." 3. Sounds like exactly what you should be doing! "Go back to Filezilla, highlight the same files on left and right panes. Right click the file on the left, and file names scroll by, but nothing seems to happen. Is it uploading?" 4. Nothing should "scroll by" when you right click on a file in the left pane. It should pop up a small window with a list of choices. The top choice should be "Upload". When you left click on Upload, assuming you are editing a file that already exists on the host side, another window will pop up that says "Target file already exists". In the window, it will show you both the local and remote file sizes, dates, etc. To the right are a list of check circles. The top one, which should be checked is "Overwrite". Click OK in the lower right hand corner of the window. When the upload is complete, a smallish blue message box will pop up that says "Transfers finished". That will go away by itself eventually, or you can click on it to make it disappear. Your modified local file now has a twin on the host. Any visible changes you have made to the local html file will now be visible in your browser. (I realize that is not the case for you yet, so I'll address some possibilities as to why not below.) 5. You might have multiple local copies of your web site. If the file you edited is not the one in the path you uploaded, then you have uploaded your existing html file again with no changes. Make sure that the entire path to your html file in Kompozer is identical to the path you see above the left pane in Filezilla. 6. OK, I'm on shaky ground here because I have not yet tried to do anything with my old Freepages site. Here is what I know: when I type https://sites.rootsweb.com/~boyerlinks into the Chrome browser I see your site. I do not however see genealogy_html in the path to the site. I actually suspect this may be your final remaining problem that is not allowing you to see the changes to your site that you have made. I went back to a copy of an email from Anne and followed this link to see what she said about using Filezilla. https://www.ancestry.com/academy/course/connect-rootsweb-filezilla The thing I noticed as I watched the video is that when she connected to the remote side, the directory was public_html. I'm thinking that for now anyway this may be a requirement! If so, that explains why changes to genealogy_html don't show up in your browser. So, with some degree of ignorance on my part, I'm going to suggest that you navigate to the public_html directory on the host side and upload your modified html file to there. Then check with your browser to see if the page changes. If this works, hurray! Also, if it works, I would strongly suggest that you rename your local side directory from genealogy_html to public_html as well. It will save a lot of hair pulling, which I can ill afford. :-) 7. So why were all my files in genealogy_html but they are now in public_html you ask? My theory is that it is due to the Freepages kerfuffle. Back in the good old pre-kerfuffle days, there were like 9 (ISTR) different directories available in Freepages. You could put your content in any or all of the 9. I don't believe that structure is available now, at least not yet. It may actually still exist, but I don't think Freepages is not going to allow you to view it with your browser. I don't remember all the categories but I'm pretty sure besides genealogy there was one for churches, one for cemeteries, one for computers/technology and so on. My guess is that you (logically and wisely) chose genealogy back then and that is why your original site was in the genealogy_html directory. Sorry to ramble on so, but I just wanted to try to give you some things to check and ideas to try. 3. Charles, I think you are confusing the issue here. My files are also located in the genealogy_html directory BUT you do not see any part of that in my site url http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/ I know genweb sites are uploaded to the public_html directory but not freepages sites.
