FreePages are not for uploading a gedcom, they are for creating webpages about your families where you can include narratives, images and other information that can be linked to a Gedcom at WorldConnect and serve as an enhancement to the Gedcom. Nothing is more boring then visiting a set of webpages that is nothing more than a list of names and a computer generated report. Using your webpages to personalize your research on your family is what makes your pages compelling and interesting for someone to visit. To give a good answer to the OP's original question- Most genealogy programs have a function to create a website from the database. Some are better at it than others. For example: A program named Gramps creates a very nice site, but it is impossible to edit it after it's created. The only thing you can do is create a whole new site and upload it. PAF creates a nice site that is easy to edit after it's created. Look in categories in your genealogy program under something like "Tools" or "Reports". Might take a bit of looking to find. On the other hand there are some programs that will create web sites directly from a GEDCOM. The one I used when I created my original site years ago was called GED2WWW. The site is simple and easy to edit and add material to with any web page creator software. It appears that GED2WWW is no longer being "supported, but it can still be found if you Google around a bit. There are many others available. Google is your friend. Most of these programs are free to use. On 05/23/2011 07:54 AM, Heidi Utley wrote: > Hi Carol, > > You should upload your ged file (family tree) to: > http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/. I agree, up to a point. Freepages is not for uploading a GEDCOM. _BUT_, that wasn't the original posters question. The OP wanted to know how to convert a GEDCOM to HTML to upload to Freepages. After a GEDCOM is converted you can go back and add all the information you want to each family/person. Pictures, narratives, whatever [ IF the webpages created are human editable ]. Over the years since I first created my site I have added tons of other information than just names, dates and places. As I learn more about each family member I add it to my site. I'll admit that I know very little about World Connect. It's my understanding that every time you add or change information on your family you have to upload a new GEDCOM. You can't just add new information as you find it. It also seems that I have seen that uploading a new GEDCOM does not necessarily "overwrite" you old information. It creates a different tree. Personally, I would much rather be able to make changes easily and quickly on my genealogy pages as I discover new information. I just recently found out where my G3Grandfather died. Took two seconds to add that to my site and a minute to upload just that one page. I also found a picture of his headstone on Find-A-Grave. That gave me his birth date. Another two seconds to add that and another minute to upload the page again. Your free to do it anyway you wish, just as I am. But to make a statement like "Your Freepages are not for your family tree,....." is just wrong. They put a section in just for that purpose. It's called "genealogy_html". If the OP wish's to convert her GEDCOM to HTML and upload the resulting site to her Freepages account that is completely up to her. No one on this list should tell her how she HAS to do it. My family tree has been on my Rootsweb/Freepages site for something approaching ten years and Rootsweb apparently has no issue with it. I would say it's a perfectly acceptable use of Freepages.
