Even before the newer smart phones I saw young people talking and sending text messages at the same time. "Typing" on the number pad with one hand without looking at the phone. I think it's a matter of familiarity. As you become more familiar with something you find it easier to do things. Then you have that segment of the population that just has to have the newest "toys".
