(The Civil War Units File is a list of more than 3000 people who are willing to help others research specific units in the U.S. Civil War. I have maintained this for about 20 years but up to now I have sent the files to someone else to upload.  That option no longer exists so I got web space on rootsweb and am climbing a steep learning curve.) The Rootsweb new user instructions page says "When you upload your first page (usually your main homepage) call it index.htm or index.html."  So I saved the list of files as html with the filename index.html and uploaded it.  But the file names come out as text, not links.  I uploaded a file with the same name as the first one in the list but still there are no links.  What do I need to do? A lesser problem:  The NeoOffice files are single spaced (with carriage returns; they're lists) and have spacing within lines to make items line up.  After I upload them, they are double spaced and wherever there were several spaces within a line, it has been reduced to one space.  I made sure I set the transfer mode to Text. The Fetch FAQ does not help with any of these problems. I need to get this site into decent shape in the next few days, so I would greatly appreciate help.  adTNAKSvance! ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2011 19:50:08 -0400 From: Carol Botteron <botteron@alum.mit.edu> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Newbie needs help setting up index etc. To: FREEPAGES-HELP@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <a0624080fcaa6be47022e@[192.168.1.47]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Following up on my own post -- a list member sent some suggestions. Long story short: I couldn't find "add link" or "create link" in NeoOffice so I tried TextEdit instead and that lets me do what I want.  Guess I just needed the right phrase to search for. So http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~acwunits/ works now! If anyone wants to look at it, I'll appreciate any suggestions.
