Presumably, you downloaded the documents' images from one or more websites and the images had been intentionally "optimized" for Web display -- i.e., reduced to the resolution of computer monitors, a typical max of 100 dpi. Think of the missing pixels as information discarded from the original; it's been sent off to the trash dump and isn't there for you.
