freepages - http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~deblack/genealogy/index.htm by mistake I go my Cole family mixed in with my black family - Is the a way to delete my black webpages and start over again ? thank you -DeAnne --- DeAnne, Make sure you have your COLEs and your BLACKs in their websites (or right folders) on your PC (local). Next..... Sign into Filezilla. Look on the LEFT side after you are in the "genealogy" website. Make sure both sides are "genealogy". On the left, you can highlight and delete any item or items you don't want. Do NOT delete the top folder structure, though. NOTE: Deleting your made files or folders within Filezilla is permanent. Double and triple check what you about to delete before actually deleting it. NOTE: It is good to practice. Make a folder called "test". Put something in it, a test picture or test page. Upload the folder with its contents. Next, refresh Filezilla, locate the "test" folder... Open it.... Delete just 1 item from that folder. Refresh. Then go back so you are sitting on the "test" folder. Delete the folder with all its contents. From your local PC side, you can upload "test" folder to inside another folder. Refresh.... go find the other folder, and find "test". Again, practice deleting "test" without touching your good folder. The practice is good. When I updated my sites, I had to bite my lip and delete the entire old site.... then upload the new. It was stressful, but Filezilla did a perfect job. :-D Again, don't touch the very top folder. Judy .
I assume you have the web site on your own computer. So make the changes there and then use Filezilla to upload changes and also delete any pages you do not want. To help with deleted pages Filezilla has a button on ribbon bar with a magnifying glass that says Toggle directory comparison. This will show files on web with a yellow highlight that are not on your computer http://sites.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/publishing-your-sites.html from Ron Lankshear http://sites.rootsweb.com/~lankshear On 8/12/2018 4:52 am, deblack@juno.com wrote: > freepages - http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~deblack/genealogy/index.htm by mistake I go my Cole family mixed in with my black family - Is the a way to delete my black webpages and start over again ? thank you -DeAnne > >

Eve, There is nothing different about the procedure for Freepages. If Anne changed the email associated with your account(s), then the email you receive from the change password site will include a link for all of the accounts associated with that email. Did you miss one of the links in the original response? If you did not update your password within one hour, that original link expires. The next possibility is that because of the volume of mail originating from rootsweb.com, they periodically appear on suspected sp*m (black) lists. Have you checked your sp*m folder to see if the email landed there? Greetings again Wise Ones, I have regained 7 of my Rootsweb sites, for which I thank all of you, especially Anne Mitchell! But the last one, which was my personal Freepages site, still eludes me. (original URL) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~eve368g Anne changed the email connected to it for me (pgva368.hotmail.com). But I have been requesting a password-change email repeatedly, and it never comes. Is there something different about the procedure for the old Freepages? Can someone help me with this? Thanks! Eve Gregory

We discussed this before they decided to bring all sites back up. Many people uploaded their sites to rootsweb expecting the sites to live on after they were no longer able to maintain them and for after they passed away. At first, rootsweb was only willing to bring sites back up that the webmasters requested be brought back up, and those that were genweb sites. But there were a lot of complaints about prior promises. Nobody can promise rootsweb and ancestry will be around forever, but we can hope they will be around after we pass away - at least, those of use who want our work to live on after we are gone. You certainly can request your site be taken down. But I would suggest you not do that, so that if there is a worse case scenario with the genealogy society, your site can live on at rootsweb. Ann has made it clear they are not going to be allowing new sites, and I understand about traffic going to your outdated site. I would like to suggest that you delete all the pages except the index page, and then make that page one that refers people to your new host. That way, you have the option later of restoring an updated version. I set up a backup site during the last outage, but never expected it to be my primary site, as I know that after I am gone, it won't stay around very long, and I want people to be able to access my work. My pages are almost all archived at the Wayback machine, but who would know to look there? Not many people.
Randy, I'm in the same position as you -- I created five separate sites with their own urls to hold my freepages data. It's no big deal financially -- only about $100 per year in total for web hosting and name registration fees. An added plus for me is that my data is all physically stored in Canada so isn't subject to any current or future American laws. None of my stuff is subversive, or even controversial, but who knows what tomorrow's crazy army of righteousness will come up with? But it still leaves a major problem -- does your genealogical society have the expertise to maintain your website? Or if they're just going to leave it sit there, would anyone notice, if for example, the data became corrupted? And would anyone there be able to fix it? At least the good people at Rootsweb will be able to keep the data visible on the internet until Rootsweb itself disappears, as it inevitably will. This is a subject which I'm starting to get worried about. And I fear that the many months of Rootsweb down-time was only the writing on the wall. Charlie Dobie. Like many people I moved my freepages content to my own new URL and things are fine. Google has indexed it and I have put up new work. My old Rootsweb freepage site is still around and interferes with google searches. I have access to it but have intentionally not brought it up to date. I realize there will be a day when I can no longer keep up this work. I have an offer from a genealogical society to archive my site for years to come at no cost. What about Rootsweb - do they have plans like this?
I doubt that Annie is going to check webpages for email addresses. And the topic of changing passwords and requiring new ones has been discussed for some time on this list. If your email addy had changed, Ann is the only one who can help you with the problem. Pat, Thank you, but I have done that already without a reply. My guess is she is busy and has not gotten to me yet. I have been trying to access my site since it went back online and only just found out last week that a new password was required. It seems to me a better way to do this would have been allowed access with the old password one time and a requirement to change it that time. This has become an exercise in frustration.
