No, it was all saved in File Manager. Yes, I did. She said the page didn't exist. I can find it, however, on the internet archive, do I know it did exist. 2. Ancestry is NOT charging us to see our pages! To clarify, ancestry is NOT charging anyone to see ANY websites on ANY of the various areas (Home sites; Rootswb county sites; Freepages with all of those directories; etc.) Nobody pays. Ancestry gives us free hosting. Be kind to them. Smiling.
There are so many fallacies in what started this thread, I don't know where to start to answer. 1. Rootsweb has been "owned" by Ancestry for years. 2. Ancestry is NOT charging us to see our pages! 3. Ancestry is expensive for their databases, especially for low incomes.. Our websites are NOT their databases. 4. Security issues forced them to take down Rootsweb while they fixed coding. 5. The old WYSIWYG Editor had security issues-- like your RW and Freepages passwords! There are better Editors. Try Expressions Web. 6. The rest is conjecture. You can't say that Ancestry is busy buying up every gene site. :-( 7. Everyone MUST keep a copy of all pages on their PC. 8. You can copy a copy of your pages from your site or sites. (Every freepages directory is a 'site'.) If you have questions, someone here will answer.
I have lost my genealogy page. It could not be restored. It consisted of 100+ "sub pages." ---- Did you talk to Ann about that?

Rootsweb being owned by Ancestry is old news; it's been that way for years now. When it happened, there were almost no changes to Freepages. The way I see it is that the recent Rootsweb changes -- to enhance security -- were occasioned by the European Union's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) taking effect last May. Every company holding individuals' personal information scrambled to get into compliance and that required major systems changes. Google and Facebook are perhaps the primary GDPR targets, but I don't think Ancestry wants to join them in the bullseye. GDPR places restrictions on how companies (and others) treat the personal information of people living in EU countries. But practically, it's more cost-effective for companies to comply with GDPR for everyone in the world than identify which people are EU residents. And besides, GDPR set a new standard for data management which other countries may soon adopt. -rt_/)

I do agree that Ancestry.com is way overboard with their pricing, but you should not have to lose all of your work if freepages suddenly becomes paypages. Keep a copy of EVERYTHING on your own home computer. There are other hosts out there where you can put your web page that are not too expensive. I have a web page at Simply Hosting, a site that caters to genealogy. It's about $48 a year and there are no ads. Anyway, keep a copy of everything that you upload on your own computer, and get a backup drive in case your computer dies. John, You don't have to try any other Host, sitesuser.rootsweb.com - is the only one. Ensure the Protocol is selected as Pat stated, and if you still don't have any luck, leave the Port empty. The password you receive from RW needs to be used within the time stated, else a new one should be requested. My password meets all the requirements listed. I am following the settings from Patricia Geary's web page with exception that I am using host freepages.rootsweb.com I've tried a number of different settings but every time I get the connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity. Show us the address you are trying to connect to. That could be another issue, all it takes is one wrong character or period in the wrong place to be unable to connect. And make sure to remove the tilde (~) from your username. If following those instructions cause the same problems again, maybe the list can figure out the correct parameters to use, if you provide a link to your site.
