Hi Vicki, I would say yes to using the WORD, although I guess you need to put a background colour on it like your original one. You mentioned you could not see a page when you first put it up and I wondered if you had saved that page first as that has to be done before you can successfully upload it and expect to see the results how you wish it to be. Think I read that in Dreamweaver MX for Dummies. Also, you can go to your local Library and ask the Interlibrary Loans Officer to interlibrary loan a book from another Library. It costs nothing and allows you to obtain books that you would not normally buy yourself. I did that with the Dreamweaver 4 and later Dreamweaver MX for Dummies. Those books provided a CD to use and learn how to make a website. One thing I note is you have the page, and have links to other pages ..... disregard that .... I went and had a look .... you have many pages behind those links in pdf so I guess that is how you want them. You have done a real great job of the pdfs .... I guess it would have been harder to do than make a website. Take a look at our POWER et al DNA Project in case you can get some ideas from it. To move around I have the word NEXT at the bottom of the page, as an instance; have access to other pages by clicking on a number/word, or on a photo that may have other photos and/or paragraphs beneath. http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dnapower/genealogy/ You simply click on the pictures until you get to the Contents page (index2.htm). On the second page is a drawing of the map of Ireland and below that an URL to take you to that guy's website in Ireland. This is one of two set of pages on the Y-DNA, in this case the I1a3a1* haplogroup guys; http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dnapower/genealogy/dna/iresults.htm Another thing we used was paternal family trees, attached by the person's personal number that I created for each. For instance I am PP00018P and clicking on that gives you my family tree. Here is one of a guy who has lived his life and gone Home. http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dnapower/genealogy/dna/p69.htm Clicking on his number at the top of that page takes you to another page on his Obituary. I actually think you could make a real beautiful website with all the information you have Vicki. Kia ora. Don't fret! You've done marvels. The last link you gave in your posting https://sites.rootsweb.com/~barronfamily/ [https://sites.rootsweb.com/~barronfamily/] which has your index.html that Rootsweb automatically goes for, is perfect. I would say you're done. But ask the Pat "girls" on this page what they think. It all works from my point of view. Regards. I figured out why I couldn't view online the draft webpage file I had successfully uploaded to the remote site in FileZilla. So, apologies, and please disregard that question. But now I have a new one - thanks for your patience! Viewing the notepad html version online, I can see the vast additional formatting changes needed if I use that platform for my homepage. See http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~barronfamily/genealogy/Barron/notepaddraft.ht ml. (I have not yet looked at Note Tab light). I also tried changing the Word version that I have of the homepage into a webpage. It looks great online, all the hyperlinks work, and even all the Rootsweb footer information was (magically) added - I didn't include that in my draft upload. Here is the link to the Word document changed to webpage: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~barronfamily/genealogy/Barron/genealogyhomepa geofvickibarronkruschwitz.htm. So my question is this: Can I use this Word-to-webpage file to replace my current home page: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~barronfamily/ (known as index.html on the FileZilla remote site)? I don't recall anyone ever mentioning using Word, though most Rootsweb webpage creators are light years beyond what I need or want to do. The one issue I see is that when I create a webpage from Word the suffix is htm rather than html. Is that a problem? Many thanks for everyone's help. Just for clarification -- Your first sentence is correct: Filezilla "copies" files from one location to another. It does not "move files". The original remains where it is and Filezilla creates a copy in the second location. If you upload (copy a file from your computer to the server) with the same file name, it will overwrite the file with that same name on the server. Pat A.

Hi Tony, Also to add to what Ron just told you Rootsweb want the exact email address you had when you were with them before. I still have mine but also another four which are more modern than the previous one. Still I think my old one will work when the time comes eh. My website user name has not changed and I just have to make sure I pick a good password this time as it has to be over 10 or more letters, numbers and some special additions like the # ( ) etc. They will no doubt let you know which ones those are. Thanks. Guess it is patience that I must abide by. Meanwhile I will refrain from going to Adobe to look at what I could do with the other website too. Patience it is. Thanks. Yes to transfer files to Rootsweb freepages is a different password. Hello all, I know this has probably been covered many times before. I am new to the list, so perhaps someone could direct me to an archived thread on this. I downloaded FileZilla and am attempting to upload some corrections to my site, but every time I try to connect, I get the following message: Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server I am using the Site Manager feature in FileZilla, Host: sitesuser.rootsweb.com, User: buccella (that's the name of my family site), I enter my updated password and Port:22 and every time I get the same message. One question I have is about the password, I updated my Ancestry.com password, is this the same as my Rootsweb password? Maybe there's a Rootsweb password out there that I am supposed to use, but I don't know how to find that out. Any assistance would be most welcome. Thank you, Tony Buccella
Yes, Anne is "it". Yes, be patient. Yes, she will help you.
Hi All, I am wondering how busy the rootsweb people are, or if there is only one person to assist in obtaining a new password. I emailed Anne 21 hours ago, as suggested, but have not heard back, and also two other emails well before that to get a new password for my FREEPAGES website, dnapower. My concern is I that have a been given seven free days by Adobe, to try out their Dreamweaver CC. I have already managed to download my other FREEPAGES website, mokurai and it went off like a dream once I had the new password. Although it took three tries at getting the link to the password, because I was thinking this email address to FREEPAGES-Help would also be accessible for the password. Suddenly the penny dropped and I used my old 2002 address, which I still have access to. Well ... at least I can receive mail on it but not send out on it .... courtesy of gmail whom I now belong to. So, now I am after a new password for my FREEPAGES website dnapower ...... Power Et Al DNA and History Project. Two groups of DNA R1b and I1 haplogroups giving us 173 participants . Since then though, there are many more as ladies have joined us with their MtDNA Full Sequence and Family Finders too. Originally there was just the Y-DNA of the male. I guess if I were to check Adobe price it might not be as dear as I am expecting and all this will be but a drop in the teacup .... or is that ocean? I know Dreamweaver is a great program but if it turns out to be too dear then I will just have to go with the new program FileZilla. Actually the name sounds familiar. Back in 2002 everyone was talking Microsoft Frontpage, I think it was called, and were having all sorts of hassles. Appreciate it if I can find an easy method of getting my new password. Have two email replies with a given number for each stating they will get back to me shortly. Forget what day that was but it is certainly more than 42 hours ago. Perhaps it is because I am in Australia and everything is happening in America. I am sleeping when they are awake and vise versa. Thanks for any help I can get. Haere, Warren. There are only three steps involved. 1. A one-time set up of the site manager to make connection with your website. Once you have set that according to all the directions that have been given you never have to worry about it again. 2. In the right window of Filezilla are all the directories that are on the website. You may have to go up or down the directory tree to get to the location of your website. All your website files are then displayed in the right window. 3. In the original setup of the Filezilla site manager, you will have specified the location on your computer where your copies of files are located. All the files stored on your computer are displayed in the left window. If necessary to change to a subsidiary folder, you do that the same way as in Windows Explorer. From then on you can upload copies of your computer files to the website, or download copies of files on the website to your computer. In either case you click on the file you want to move and then choose "download" or "upload". All Filezilla does is move files in one direction or the other. Any manipulation of data on a file or other editing is done on your computer using whatever program you choose.
Hi Pat, Thanks ..... have just sent an email to Anne but have stayed with the old email address of mokurai@powercrt.com (didn't see the part in your sentence that Anne would allow my new email address ... which I have had for some years too). Have five counting the original, but can not post from the original, as gmail will allow emails in but I must post on gmail. Hope this sorts it all out. Haere, Warren. ps I recognise your name from many years before. Vicki, Filezilla is only a tool to copy your pages from YOUR computer to the RW servers. It has no editing capabilities. If you need to make simple edits to your page, you can use a plain text editor such as NoteTab light which is free. It does require you to have some knowledge of how to create a link to the file you want to reference. Or you can download one of the free editors, of which there are a number. There is no one program that is going to let you edit your pages and copy them to the server at the same time. With trepidation, I have read over the past months the adventures and difficulties experienced by individuals trying to access and update their websites. I waited until I had a block of time and just requested my new password, which seems to have taken, and have been reading Pat Geary's instructions about Filezilla. Before I tackle that, even with Pat's step-by-step, I thought I might gain more insight by asking a few questions. First, my freepages site is very simple, and that is how it will remain (if I ever access it again J). It consists only of a homepage with descriptive text and links to pdf files that I have uploaded. For future, all I want to do is update the text occasionally and add a few more links on the homepage, plus upload revised and new pdf files. Nothing more. While I am sure that Filezilla is wonderful for those of you who are creating more ambitious sites, is there nothing less complicated for those of us with very modest plans? I do understand that the File Manager was considered a security risk, but without something simple like that available, the complexity of Filezilla certainly discourages us from updating our sites. I can certainly upload my pdf files to my Ancestry account, but over the years, with the files publicly available, many people have contacted me to exchange information. While not badly out of date yet, at some point my pdfs will need updating. But I truly dread having to go through a major process just to try to upload revisions, not to mention adding files. Thanks for any suggestions - and if it is to just get over it and learn Filezilla, I'll see whether that is a worthwhile option.

I just thought I would share that I recently became aware of an excellent software tool for doing just that. It is called "Agent Ransack" and is free for the downloading. https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/download/ Depending on how many picture files you have it might be a bit tedious to find the specific files you are looking for if you search for file names ending in .jpg, .gif, etc. but at least it provides a way to find all of them. If you know other parts of the file name of course that could help limit the scope of the search.
