Hi All, I have a list numbering problem. What I am trying to do is have an ordered list of children and within that, another ordered list of their children. And, to have a little heading that says "Children" I've used list-style-type:none to stop the number appearing in front of the word "Children" - which works fine. But, it means that the next child is numbered incorrectly. The code is as follows: <ol> <li>Frederick WIGGINS 1806-1831</li> <li>Mary WIGGINS 1808-1877<br /> Spouse: John HEDGES c1808-1850</li> <li style="list-style-type:none">Children: <ol> <li>Mary Ann HEDGES 1837-</li> <li>William HEDGES 1839-1877</li> </ol> </li> <li>Elizabeth WIGGINS 1812-1832</li> </ol> Which appears as: 1. Frederick WIGGINS 1806-1831 2. Mary WIGGINS 1808-1877 Spouse: John HEDGES c1808-1850 Children: i. Mary Ann HEDGES 1837- ii. William HEDGES 1839-1877 4. Elizabeth WIGGINS 1812-1832 How can I make Elizabeth number 3? I found it was easier to have my family tree software first create the tree and then i copied that file to web page /view source/ copy the source and then publish that. But here is a tuturial on how to change the number on your list: *http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/lists.html* *, it is not possible to continue list numbering automatically from a previous list or to hide numbering of some list items. However, authors can reset the number of a list item by setting its value attribute. Numbering continues from the new value for subsequent list items. For example:* <ol> <li value="30"> makes this list item number 30. <li value="40"> makes this list item number 40. <li> makes this list item number 41. </ol> On Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 3:38 AM, Rosemary Probert <rosemary@rprobert.co.uk>wrote: > Hi All, > > I have a list numbering problem. > > What I am trying to do is have an ordered list of children and within > that, another ordered list of their children. > And, to have a little heading that says "Children" > > I've used list-style-type:none to stop the number appearing in front of > the word "Children" - which works fine. > > But, it means that the next child is numbered incorrectly. > > The code is as follows: > > <ol> > <li>Frederick WIGGINS 1806-1831</li> > <li>Mary WIGGINS 1808-1877<br /> > Spouse: John HEDGES c1808-1850</li> > <li style="list-style-type:none">Children: > <ol> > <li>Mary Ann HEDGES 1837-</li> > <li>William HEDGES 1839-1877</li> > </ol> > </li> > <li>Elizabeth WIGGINS 1812-1832</li> > </ol> > > Which appears as: > > 1. Ronald wrote: "I should have known better but I was lulled into believing freepages were safe. No harm done to me but the link it to a malware page." He included the offending message. Our excellent list admin has addressed this before, but this is my understanding of what she's said. These messages break the rules governing the list and are not allowed. It happens from time to time that an unwitting list subscriber doesn't have good and current anti-virus protection. A virus infects their computer and sends out such messages to addresses in their contacts list -- one of those addresses being this list. It may also happen that spammers sign up on the list, hoping to take advantage of sending to vast numbers. Often, they are caught in advance; sometimes they slip through -- briefly. It is almost impossible to catch the first bad message before it's posted to the list; posting is mostly automatic. The admin's best -- but time-consumptive -- course of action is to put the unfortunate on moderation and review the messages before allowing them to be posted. If she's convinced the problem is resolved, she can reinstate the subscriber. Or if it continues, ban them completely. We serve no good purpose by reproducing the bad messages. We only propagate the problem we complain about. IMO, this list is safer than most -- good rules, well-administered. But nothing on the Internet is so safe that one can ignore security precautions, including: 1. Good and current virus and malware protective software; and 2. Vigilance and good habits. -rt_/)
True, it was a computer that uses a Yahoo! email account that was infected. Freepages is not involved, the email list run through RootsWeb transmitted the spam email. While I'm curious just how much spam the server does filter out, I believe RootsWeb does a good job keeping the lists clean. -----Original Message----- On Tue, Jun 19, 2012 at 7:21 AM, Ronald Mesnard <ron_mesnard@hotmail.com>wrote: > > I should have known better but I was lulled into believing freepages were > safe. Have you contacted the RootsWeb HelpDesk about this? They should be able to help you update your email address on the Zombie tree so you can remove or update it. Thanks Pat that's good to know! I use RootsMagic as my main program and it does keep the ID numbers for each person. Where I might run into trouble would be if I merged people. I think the second ID number gets dropped. That is not normally a big problem though. Kim On 06/15/2012 08:15 PM, Pat Asher wrote: > Post-ems are linked through ID numbers. And I followed Pat's excellent example and advice and have my trees on WC and links to those from my website. http://www.muirfamily-genealogy-online.co.uk/ I too used to use Freepages and still use Freeps for one of my websites for a Welsh Mailing List. If your genie program maintains the same ID numbers for individuals, the post-ems will remain linked. If you are one of the unfortunate few who use (or used to use) a program that reassigns ID numbers every time you export a new GEDCOM, the post-em links will be scrambled. I haven't heard a complaint lately, so hopefully most folks are now using a genie program that assigns an ID number permanently to each individual in the database :) The only other reason I can think of where the ID number might change is if your program has an option to "pack" the database, removing all unused/merged/deleted numbers. That will result in changes to some ID numbers in the database. Pat Asher
Billie, When you log into World Connect, click on your account. Then find the tree you want, click EDIT. Then the Tree Admin page comes up. Click the tree name again. That page is called Manage Tree. In the menu on the right side is an option, Replace Tree with New GEDCOM. Click that and upload your new file. It will have the same tree name and I *think* the postems are kept. I posted a reply to myself before I saw your reply. For almost a year now I've been trying to upload a gedcom and something has always prevented it. It seems that whatever has been blocking me from making the necessary changes on Worldconnect is "fixed". After a year of off and on trying to upload a new gedcom I did get one up just a few minutes ago. I can see Pat's point. I think a bit differently, but....... My issue with World Connect is that I have information there that is wrong. I can't change it. All I can do is put a post-em note on it that someone might read, and then again, they might not. The wrong information is now there forever. On my genealogy pages on Freepages I made the necessary change.
