Admittedly the page was written in the easy standard way using Publisher; which I use on all my websites ... and I even added an extra "Title" line to be double sure the HTML was ok. Perhaps it is not listed in the correct directory? Is there a delay in updating the directory? William Barron Www.w1wab.com sent via iPad

    3. I would like to disagree. Even with a good HTML editor that can create all the bells and whistles, it is still necessary to know HTML. I find this to be very true when I am using FrontPage 2003 or Nvu. 3. Most everyone uses one family tree software or other [ PAF, Family tree Maker, etc. ]. I don't think there is a modern program that won't export a complete family tree web site that just needs to be uploaded. 3. With the greatest respect to those here with much greater web skills than myself I would point out for the benefit of 'newbies' that learning HTML is NOT necessary to publish basic web pages. There are numerous programs available that will allow you to build a page in the same manner as you create a document in your word processor (in fact most wordprocessor software provide a 'save as html' just for this purpose). It is NOT necessary to actually create the page manually in HTML. Other software is more elegant and allows for more 'bells and whistles' to be added but is still a WYSIWYG type operation. A basic understanding of HTML is helpful and how to insert links (be it manually in HTML or via the particular software you use) is essential. As a former dial up user I tend to keep my pages very simple and have had no problems using this method, it may not be fancy but it provides the information which is after all what we are all trying to do. And yes, I know using 'Word' is not recommended due to it adding a bunch of extra header stuff but it works for me! >From the scenic Klondike Hills, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. I think Pat Geary, Barry, and everyone else who offers suggestions here, would agree with me that it is important to remember that none of us were born knowing how to write HTML. Like any "second" language, it takes some study and practice. Everyone who gives advice on this list (or anywhere else, for that matter) started out feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of making and publishing their first web page. We made our first attempts, were less than satisfied, asked for advice, tried again, asked for more advice, tried again, and again, and again. The wonderful thing about this list is that there is almost always someone who has discovered an answer to a particular problem, and is willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us. 3. Dan asked ".. how do we get to the wonderful website stage that you've achieved. I am still very confused as to how to put things on a rootsweb page." Dan, your confusion is normal. Making & publishing Web pages sometimes seems like an alternate universe with too many dimensions. It's best to pick out one thing at a time to focus on. The more specific your question, the better the answers will be. Both Pats are too modest to say so, but they've done wonderful jobs of creating their websites and providing helpful materials for newbies to Web design. Also, they've been generous in allowing their materials and techniques to be freely borrowed. The most essential topic to learn is HTML, the language of the World Wide Web. HTML files are plain text, with special tags to format text. Tags are enclosed in angle brackets, "<" & ">". For example, "<.p>" begins a paragraph and "./p>" ends it. (A convention on this list is to add leading dots to the tags so they don't take effect.) There are many online resources for learning HTML (including www.w3c.org) but I think Asher's and Geary's are best to start with. The next important topic is CSS, for "cascading style sheets". CSS adds special styling to the HTML defaults. It's a way, for example, to use more color & font sizes in the pages, add sidebars, etc. Again, there are online resources; begin with the Pats'. You can produce a basic Web page with only HTML. If you want the impressive effects that Pat, Pat & Barry have achieved, you'll need CSS. I'd recommend either (1) Creating the pages on your own computer, then uploading it to your Freepages site OR (2) Using Freepages' online page editor -- be sure to save before exiting. If the latter, save the page later to your computer. There's no getting around it; you'll need to do some work. And the first part of the work is learning. -rt_/)

If you let the list know the area you are interested in, then the appropriate pointers or help will be forthcoming from this list. Barry
