Are you asking about the file upload utility that is part of the Freepages File Manager?  I just uploaded some files and didn't have a problem.  That is not to say there was not one last night or earlier today, but everything seems to be working now. ***** Thanks everyone. It's the Freepages upload utility that's been giving me problems for at least two days now. I usually try around the same time every day. I haven't tried yet today. My modem only gets 46.6 kbps if I'm lucky. It was a cheap one...You get what you pay for huh? Paul

    3. Could be dial-up. Even with DSL it can be slow some time, especially when the Internet is extremely busy. I just uploaded some files and didn't have a problem. That is not to say there was not one last night or earlier today, but everything seems to be working now. If you are referring to a stand-alone FTP program/client on your computer, we'll need more information, i.e. What program are you using? What error message did you receive when you tried to upload files? Are you aware that the internet itself can be the source of some problems. For instance, if a major hub between you and the server you are trying to access is down, your connection to that server may fail. This is true whether you are trying to access the server via HTTP or FTP. If a hub is down, traffic is rerouted through other hubs, but that can sometimes overload those servers. I remember an instance several years ago where my connection to the RootsWeb/Ancestry servers kept failing. Normally routed to Cleveland, then Chicago, Denver, and Salt Lake, when a Chicago hub went down, my connection was rerouted to Cleveland, Washington DC, somewhere in Tennessee or Georgia, then Texas to San Diego and back to Salt Lake. It had nothing to do with my system or hardware; but because all those hubs were already busy with their normal traffic, they couldn't sustain the additional load represented by my attempted FTP connection. If I am having a problem connecting or sustaining a connection, I do a trace route to see where the problem is occurring. Here is one set of instructions: http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/troubleshooter/traceroute.html I also will check the Internet Traffic Report at http://www.internettrafficreport.com/ Pat Asher

    1. [FreeHelp] Heads Up! Changed "reply to list" setting
    2. List Admin FPH
    3. When Freepages and this Help list were established way back when, unlike many RootsWeb mailing lists it was set up so replies would go to the poster -- not the list. There were a number of reasons for this, the primary one being that when the original poster received an answer they didn't understand, they would often send their password, hoping the responder would help them make the suggested changes. The list has evolved over the years. Even people who are new to Freepages are more sophisticated about the Internet, and most now realize that passwords are to protect their work and their information, and that passwords should not be shared willy-nilly, or posted on a public mailing list. So to make it easier for those list members who regularly respond to questions, I have changed the list settings so ALL REPLIES WILL NOW GO TO THE LIST. This won't affect those of you who ask questions on the list. But responders will no longer have to change the email headers to send a copy of their reply to the list. They will only have to be changed if it is necessary to send a private reply. Hope this change will help everyone. Pat Asher List Admin
