    3. With the current requests for WYSIWYG Editors appearing on FreeHelp, it is probably a good time to mention that not all of those editors are as user friendly as one would expect. As HTML is a "structured language", there is obviously a limit to what a simple user friendly editor can do. Personally, I don't even remember constructing a page using a WYSIWYG Editor, though I have had occasion to review constructed pages in them. For what it is worth, my recommendation for new-comers to HTML is to try the SeaMonkey browser which contains under the Windows menu in the toolbar, "Composer" a WYSIWYG built in editor. The Help Menu should see you on your way. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ The SeaMonkey Browser also contains its own Email Client - similar to that of ThunderBird. The SeaMonkey Gecko Engine is essentially the same as that in the Firefox browser and is nearly as up-to-date as that browser. A more sophisticated WYSIWYG Editor is the W3C Amaya, which is an open source development of a very high standard - supported by W3C. http://www.w3.org/Amaya/ Current stable downloads are available at the bottom of the page for Windows, Mac and Unix Operating Systems. Finally, there is a "learning curve" involved in getting to know how these editors work, but once mastered the creation of webpages should be "plain sailing". Barry

For my use I use a text based >> editor. > Well if you are comfortable writing code direct > that is good..... I learned to write pages back in the dark ages I guess. I think there were maybe a couple dozen tags to do everything with. There was no such thing as a WYSIWYG editor back then. Notepad was the editor of choice. My first dedicated HTML editor was HTMLED. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It had "buttons" I could click to insert code instead of typing everything. Still had to manually add whatever modifiers I wanted. If there were special tags that I used all the time I could make custom buttons. By the time WYSIWYG editors came along I didn't need one. To me doing a web page is like drawing a picture. I see the page in my head and then write the code to draw it on the screen. > > I used FrontPage2000 for years and found > transition to the Free SharePoint Designer 2007 easy > I am sure you would find it ok > > > Ron Lankshear -Sydney NSW (from London-Shepherds > Bush/Chiswick) > try my links > http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lankshear/ > -- “The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets.” — Will Rogers _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._

    3. Has or does anyone here use the Amaya software? I have to admit, I never use WYSIWYG software. It bumfuzzles the heck out of me how to do anything in a WYSIWYG. For my use I use a text based editor. I do, when I hear of a "new" one download and give it a try just to see how well it works. I also don't use Windows veryday. I use Linux, kubuntu to be exact, for everything every day. I do have Windows available in case of need or I have to help someone with their system. I down loaded both the Linux and Windows versions of Amaya. After playing around for a bit with both I think it is just about the worst I've seen. The user interface is horrible. I can generally do something with a WYSIWYG that approximates a web page, very badly, after a while. Not with this one. The tool area on the right side needs to scroll and doesn't. I don't think I would recommend this one to anyone. 3. Barry, WOW! --- http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ Side bar - Down load and releases then center on page the type for your computer. I took English US, 2.12.1 down load under windows... I just figured out where composer was.. I took about five minutes and figured most of it out, even saved and posted to the web file I already have on my computer.. Thank you.. This is easy and Much much better then the one connected to the freepages in the file manager. It did not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.. Yes I already have experience with FP2000, but that can be a hindrance when trying to figure out something new...you expect it to work the same. The project I'm working on could have two or three different people working in the pages and we needed something easy and free.. as long as we don't use the same names (webpage name or html file name) all of us can work on the site.. This does solve some of the problems.. I need to go back to see how it handles cuting and pasting of text to the page... Again thank you... It isn't a freepages account but I know this group and I like the "Free help" I get here... the site I'm working on is ... http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/ Nelda Bobbi and Sandy, I'm going to try doing the Oct newsletter with this free software... The IE Conditional Comments approach for tackling discrepances between valid W3C code and IE proprietry code from the past is till the easiest and preferred means of delivering the same content to Grandma and Grandpa's old computer. My approach is to use HTML5 so that the code renders in Standards mode in all browsers, and just be aware of layout problems known to exist in older browsers, while being prepared to adapt to the lack of transparency when rendering .png images, differences in opacity and transistions etc.. Rounded borders, text/box shadows and the like, just degrade gracefully and your layout is maintained. Separate stylesheets for (gte IE 5) & (lte IE 9) is another way to go, but at the end of the day, another 10 years will pass by quickly and the issues of today will be history. If then you want to view the "historical pages", IE Old Versions pages will be viewable with "addons" or "plugins". Your point is valid, though I'm sure that a full reversion to pages of tables is not on the cards, but those decorative borders created by many that use FreeHelp will always be viewable in the browsers of the future. 3. The MicroSoft Development Network (MSDN) has just published details on issues that may affect webpages designed for older versions of Internet Explorer, detailing what can be done to alleviate problems when those pages are viewed in IE10. A number of IE only features available in the older IE browsers, e.g. Conditional Comments, XML Data Islands, DX Filters etc.. will no longer be supported. For those that have pages that include XML data islands, it would be wise to have a look, as the resolution is relatively straight forward. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/hh801219%28v=vs.85%29.aspx Internet Explorer 10 for Win 7 and 8 launches in 4 weeks.

    2. I think MOST people use more than one browser. I use Firefox 15.0.1 for most things but I also have AOL and use the integrated AOL browser which employs IE for a few sites. I never bothered to upgrade IE from version 7 simply because I don't USE IE...but I hadn't realized how heavily the AOL browser "borrows" from it and "looks" to a Web site to BE IE 7. Recently I was doing a Google search with the AOL browser and got messages at the top of the pages as they loaded that they were ending support for IE 7...YouTube among other sites. But it isn't making me upgrade IE...just making me use Firefox now for more sites. :) I suppose there are some out there with old computers who don't have the luxury of installing multiple browsers but I'd bet most people do. So if one doesn't work with a site --- we just switch to another browser that DOES. Joan In a message dated 9/28/2012 7:13:55 P.M. Barry, as always, we appreciate your letting us know about browser changes or idiosyncrasies, and what can be done about them. But as someone who personally believes that designing genealogy web pages in particular should gear to the lowest common denominator, i.e. assume your visitors may still have a dial up (slow) connection, and software (a browser) that is two or three or more generations behind the latest upgrade, that any genealogy site that announces "Best Viewed with XXXX" or uses any browser specific coding is bound to limit accessibility by its TARGET audience.
