    1. [FreeHelp] Windows 8 - Navigating the "old way".
    2. Barry Carlson
    3. I've found this interesting little article that is probably a "must read" for those that have somehow acquired a Windows 8 O/S PC, or are thinking about having it installed on their existing PC. For those that don't know, Win 8 is essentially designed around being a "touch screen" O/S, but for those that don't like the idea or feel out of their depth in coming to terms with this "touchy-feely" world, there still is the old established way of getting around your PC. It is all detailed in this NY Times article. http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/25/a-windows-8-cheat-sheet/ Barry

    3. Hi Ron, Not too sure but here is a great HTML site for Monumental Inscriptions. Alan wrote this himself and you can click on the plan and go to the gravestone. I don't know if you can manipulate it for what you need? I know Alan wouldn't mind you asking. http://www.shotover.clara.net/micd/index.htm Pat G has a tutorial on tables but the one I am looking for I cannot now find, it was an example from one I had, done by Pat and others. I can upload tomorrow for you, but otherwise maybe look at this on Pat's site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/frontpage/exce l-tables-in-frontpage.htm Cheers, Jill -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ron Yates Sent: 21 October 2012 03:01 To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Drawing schematics I am in need of a program that I can use to lay out a cemetery showing the respective burial locations on an HTML page. I recently mentioned it when inserting a data base .txt file into a web-page, and the following page describes its use for browser detection and the insertion of vendor prefixes to experimental CSS properties, in order to reduce the multiple CSS coding required to cater for prefixed styles in all browsers. http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/fade-images.html <http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Ebristowe/fade-images.html> Barry

I've noted your comments about not being able to create a Surnames only tree. I suspect that can be overcome, provided you make a separate Gedcom file in that format. The HTML output files can be easily edited and the overall CSS can be customized to create an original looking site. Barry

    3. Idon't want to produce output from gedcom files. My program already produces what I think are good trees that allow the visitor to move around within the family (an example <http://gdavis.id.au/family/trees/d00084.htm#i01088>). What I want to do is draw an overall representation of the big picture that only shows surnames that are linked to each other and visitors would be able to see connections between different family names. If you click on the example link you will see Emily CHAPPEL at the top of the web page and two columns across you will see James ROGERS. I would like to show that there are other families connected to the ROGERS name and the MERREN name just to name a couple. It would be done in a freestyle mode where I can add new boxes with a surname each time a new family name is added to the tree. Like a road map of the whole family. 3. Greg asked, "I would like a piece of software that you can place a box on the screen and maybe able to move it later to accommodate other boxes as necessary. Of course it would be nice if it produced HTML output." And then: "What I want to do is draw an overall representation of the big picture that only shows surnames that are linked to each other and visitors would be able to see connections between different family names. If you click on the example link you will see Emily CHAPPEL at the top of the web page and two columns across you will see James ROGERS. I would like to show that there are other families connected to the ROGERS name and the MERREN name just to name a couple." It seems to me very much like a graphic image night be the solution. One can do boxes with HTML/CSS, but it's a pain -- especially, if the layout will be changing. How about software that produces SVG (scalable vector graphic) images? SVG images are not (strictly speaking) HTML, but they can be displayed by browsers. Their big advantage is relatively small file-size as compared with raster graphic images such as GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc. Or -- for the other suggestions -- make a scaled-down GEDCOM containing just the surnames to be displayed in their relationships to each other? This could serve as the input to the GEDmill or Genmill programs. -rt_/)

    3. Greg and list, What Greg describes below is something I've wanted for quite a while -- to draw a "tree" with branches and twigs representing different families which are connected to the main "trunk". I've seen artistic representations of these family trees done by artists and I think they were popular in the 19th century, but I don't know of any software which will do this. Charlie Dobie. 3. @ Caroline & Barry, I am running an HP x64 machine with Win7 Home Premium and installed GEDMill software first by right-clicking and installing as administrator. "DO NOT OPEN AT FINISH" Unclick the check mark, click 'Finish' and closed the program. Once installed, I then right-clicked on the short-cut and clicked on 'Troubleshoot Compatibility'. This launched the software, adjusted settings for Win98 XP Service Pack 2 and I just followed the instructions. I use Family Tree Maker 2012 software for my family tree because I have all of mine on Ancestry.com and it auto-syncs with my desktop software. So I exported a .GED file as 'Other' (non-FTM UT-8) GEDCom 5.5 file, loaded it into GEDMill and went right through the instructions. The software generated the pages with no problem whatsoever. Give it a try. You will probably like it.
