In my page at http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~oxtonnewengland/ See the section 'PREFACE to the Edition of 10 December, 2012' . The bullets in front of each generation-child's name are from the MSword character set 'Wingdings2' where for instance 'w = a black dot enclosed 3'. Problem is: These Wingding characters render just fine in browsers IE7 and Seamonkey but are rendered invisible in Chrome and Firefox. What to do? The line of code for a typical example is: <p align="JUSTIFY"><font face="Wingdings"><font size="3">?</font></font> o Their children</p> where that '?' is the black dot with a number 1 in it. similarly <p align="JUSTIFY"><font face="Wingdings"><font size="3"></font></font> - Their grandchildren</p> results in a black dot with a number 2 in it. What should I change the code to in order to make these bullets render properly in all browsers. Or what global style instruction might do the trick. 3. I don't use Windows so I don't have the Windows Wingding font. What I see when I visit the page in Firefox is an "o", a "-", a ">" and an "~". It's exactly the same for both preface lists. When I use a different browser I get some Greek letters in the specified preface. That's the problem with using a non-standard font. It may not render right even if the font is installed on the computer. If you want to do something with a non-standard font it's best to create a graphic from the font and use the graphic. It will render properly every time. I seriously doubt you have the Cherokee Syllabary font installed, unless your on a MAC. To see an example of using a font as a graphic you can visit http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~itchertp/index.html . All the Cherokee language is as a graphic. On 12/11/2012 08:05 AM, A. J. 1. [FreeHelp] GEDMill version 1.11.0 - revisited
    2. Barry Carlson
    3. Recently there was a request for help when the FreePages bottom banner attached itself to a self-closing <div /> used to create a horizontal rule in the free GEDmill version 1.11.0 program. http://www.logicmill.com/ At the time I suggested that the simple remedy was to change the gedmill-style.css file to make the banner place itself at the bottom of the open window, but also commented that opening up each of the generated tree files and editing the offending <div class="hr" /> by replacing it with <div class="hr"></div> could also be an option - though a tedious one. Well, as things often go, the penny dropped when I later realized that I have the free PSPad Editor installed, http://www.pspad.com/ ... and amongst its many useful options there is a multiple file Search & Replace feature. There's nothing like tackling the original problem head on, so I download all the .html files associated with the GEDmill tree created by the original poster and saved them to a separate folder. After opening PSPad, I clicked on Search in the top menu bar, and from the dropdown menu selected "Search/Replace in Files". In the "Text to Find" field I entered <div class="hr" /> , then checked the "Replace With" checkbox and entered <div class="hr"></div> in the associated field. Ensure the "Whole Words Only" checkbox is checked, along with the "Clear previous search results" checkbox, then move down to the "Search Scope" section. Select the "Selected Directory" radio button and navigate in the associated field to the folder in which the download files have been saved. Move now to the "File masks" field and enter *.html. Double check the data you entered in the top two fields, and if correct click on OK. 2904 files and about 1 minute later the whole operation was over, and the FreePages bottom banner can now reside where it wants without any additional help. In summary, though the GEDmill program is no longer being supported, there are definitely possibilities for restyling the generated pages and by using the PSPad editor it is possible to modify the generated HTML to allow substantial layout changes. That is actually where the problem with the bottom banner starts, as that div effectively closes the #userContentFP div, which is why the banner is attaching itself there. As you are probably not keen on modifying the HTML on every page that is created, the solution I have already given you is most likely the best one, but it is possible to get the bottom banner to position itself correctly by - (a) Removing the #fp_ftr style from the gedmill-style.css, and (b) Removing the padding-bottom:40px from DIV#page style. (c) Open the gedmill.js file and add the following javascript to it :- window.onload = function() { document.getElementById('userContentFP').style.position = "relative"; document.getElementById('fp_ftr').style.position = "absolute"; document.getElementById('fp_ftr').style.margin = "8px 0 0 -8px"; } ... then save the file and load to the server. Alternatively, you can open each of the generated HTML files in your editor and locate the offending <div class="hr" /> and replace with:- <div class="hr"></div> Any questions? Just ask. Barry

    3. Roger, Yes, the GedMill program can be used on FreePages, with the proviso that the FreePages bottom banner needs to be helped to know where to go as the mini tree inserted by JavaScript at the top of the page is absolutely positioned. This causes the bottom banner to lose its position in the relative flow. Somewhere I have a small piece of JavaScript I created to measure the depth of the rendered page and then place the bottom banner in the correct position. I will dig it out and check it, but in the meantime the following addition to the gedmill-style.css will place the offending banner at the bottom of the open window. #fp_ftr { position:fixed; bottom:0; left:0; } Also, modify the DIV#page style by adding - padding-bottom:40px; ... that is to allow extra space at the bottom of the page for the W3C validator image. Both these modifications are done in the CSS, and consequently they apply to all the GedMill linked pages. On testing, I have discovered an anomaly with the rendering of the GEDMill generated pages. My first question is can GEDMill generated pages be used on the Freepages Website, if not, then I will delete my work and look for another approach; otherwise, I need to know what is causing the anomaly which can be viewed via the following link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rogerhendrix/hendrix-james -descendants/indiI108.html Many thanks in advance for any help and/or suggestions concerning this anomaly. I never submitted my site to Google but it is the top listed selection for my g-grandfather 'Luther Baker" even though it is relatively new compared with the rest of the sites with his material. The rating is mostly due to links and traffic. I only took about 2 weeks to be listed in the search results and only a few months to climb to first place. You worrying about submitting your site map is a waist of effort Google routinely checks your site now that it is on their radar. Submitting it again will not influence your score. If you want a better score think about links link to other relates sites and have them link to you. That will also increase your traffic because people can find you other than a search engine. Ron

    2. Taking a step back, and re-examining the issue ... While the robots.txt is an interesting issue, how is a member page related to the workings of FreePages? Given the dynamic sub-domain addresses FreePages uses, and the virtually non-existent robots.txt limitations on the main Rootsweb domain (not effective on the FreePages sub-domains) what is the specific FreePages issue that needs to be worked out, as opposed to the Rootsweb issue the server techs may need to look at? -----Original Message----- <snip> On the www server, it is blocked, i.e. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/robots.txt If this is a recent change, that may be what is causing the error message for you. 3. Hi Jill, I didn't know that you used a robots.txt file for this purpose. Don't you add this in the head of your index page, so that the whole site is indexed? Can you not copy this back to your computer and open it and check it is correct? Does this help you? http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/website-design-search-engines.html OR http://www.robotstxt.org/ Cheers, Jill -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of chris dale Sent: 25 November 2012 14:21 To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: [FreeHelp] inability to submit sitemap due to fileproblem Hello again I tried to resubmit my website site map today (I had 1303 pages indexed before this) and it was rejected.  The error message read "couldnt access my site map- network unreachable, robots.txt unreachable.  Found a robots.txt file at the root of your site but were unable to download it.  Please ensure that it is accessible or remove it completely.  This robots.txt issue is driving me insane.  I have quite a few pictures/graphic images on my website so I have this in my template code for my website (should it only be on the pages with pictures or graphic images?) It has been like that for over a year on all of my pages. but I don't think I have changed or done anything different since googlebot starting having trouble accessing my site Nov 14 because of this robots.txt problem. <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" /> <meta name="Description" content="County Mayo, Ireland Major Market Towns Map." /> <meta name="Keywords" content="Mayo, Ireland, Market, Towns, Map" /> I want to be able to continue to resubmit my site maps and have them indexed. Do I need to remove the <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />  or ? to clear up this problem or is there something else you would suggest that I do.  I really haven't had time to do much work on my website since mid Nov when this all started so I have no idea where the problem stems from Any suggestions would be appreciated.
