Pat, yes, that looks similar to what I am trying to do, except mine is just a simple color background. I will read the article and hopefully learn more how to do it. Thanks for the links. Nelda, I do not want page borders, only the background image behind the title at the top. I was able to upload a test page for you to see. The azur banner should appear at the top behind the title, but does not. You can see the test page here. Since this is only a test page for the banner, I did not bother to get all the other links, images, etc, loaded. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~okgs/ogs/index.htm On 1/5/2013 3:02 PM, Nelda Percival wrote: > Under format - shared boarders: > > check all pages -pick the boarder you want- then click ok ' your page will show up - put your picture file there and save this will activate all pages . > > Insure when you upload the website you get all the folders. Under format - shared boarders: check all pages -pick the boarder you want- then click ok ' your page will show up - put your picture file there and save this will activate all pages . Insure when you upload the website you get all the folders. I had to go to rootsweb.com's file manager to upload mine..by hand.. Not all bells and whistles of FP are recognized by Freepages. There is a FrontPages mailing list ask the admin here for the addy to it.. To me easiest way to have a boarder on all pages. the picture file (your boarder) will save in the folder marked private. Sorry I don't do CSS ?? But if you would copy paste the entire html for that page I'd look to see if I could find your prioblem. Problem being <.html> is a html command and if you don't put the "." period at the beginning it will activate in an email. <what ever is inside is the command to start > and </what ever is inside is the command to stop> nelda Today well lived - makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. I want to put a color background banner across top of all web pages and am trying to add it using an existing external CSS file. I made a 140 px high x 20 px wide jpg image and set as background image with horizontal only repeat. Using FrontPage 2000, it looks good in Normal view, but when I change to Preview, the banner is not there. Can someone tell em what is wrong? My external css file is below, the banner info is in bottom paragraph under body. Is this correct? h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6 {font-family: verdana, arial, 'sans serif'; text-align: center; color: #000000} p,td,th,tr {font-family: verdana, arial, 'sans serif'; color: #000000; margin-left: 10pt;} ul {list-style: disc; } ol {list-style: decimal; } p,li,th,td {font-size: 100%;} a:link {text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; color:#003300} a:visited {text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; color:#009999} a:hover { text-decoration: underline; font-weight:bold; color:#0000ff} a:active {color: #990000; font-weight:bold;} hr {color: sienna} body { background color: #ffffff background-image: url(azur2.jpg); background-repeat: repeat-x;}

Excuse me, but I believe GEDMill (and GED2HTML) are for generating family tree pages. If these family trees are to be loaded to RootsWeb FreePages, you will be in violation of the rules you agreed to when you requested the pages. RootsWeb made it very clear that FreePages could not be used for family trees. You are to use RootsWeb WorldConnect for family trees. Hendrix I had not heard of it or looked at it before. It says it takes a GEDCOM generated by your family tree program to create pages. If that's the case I wouldn't expect it to ever stop working, at least as long as you can generate a GEDCOM of standard 5.5. All that it says for now is that there will be no more updates from the creator: <quote> Regrettably I no longer have time to support GEDmill and add new features or correct bugs. If you wish to file a bug, or a feature request, please create an account at BerliOS <http://developer.berlios.de/account/register.php> (GEDmill's new home), and submit the bug <http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func=addbug&group_id=11047> there. (Please also encourage any software-savvy contacts of yours to get involved with the GEDmill source code!) <unquote> As it now stands any person with programing skills is free to take the source code and maintain, modify or whatever they want to do. Berlios says there is supposed to be a page for GEDMILL but so far one has not been uploaded. That's the place you will want to keep an eye on in case there are any changes. http://developer.berlios.de/projects/gedmill/ Many years ago I sued a DOS program, GED2HTML, to create my pages from a GEDCOM. Out of curiosity a year or so ago I decided to see if it would still work for another project I was working on. It worked just fine in XP. As another option, beside GEDMILL, I believe all modern family tree programs will generate websites. -- "The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets." --- Will Rogers _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._
Does anyone know of a GEDMill look alike program that is currently being maintained? I have been informed that GEDMill is no longer being supported. Roger P. Hendrix
The original posters request for help came about due to the him converting a MS Word document to HTML. That part of the deal happened relatively easily, but the outcome was that a number of bullets in the document were using the MS Wingdings font, which is shipped with some Windows Operating Systems and/or browsers, but not others. My suggestion was to use the Unicode equivalent characters to address the problem. That worked in most situations, except in IE7 and IE6. A work round was possible, but I felt that if a suitable free font could be found that included the bullet styles similar to those in Wingdings, then that font should be used in the @font-face style in the webpage. As luck would have it, further research only located one such font and it wasn't free.:-( On reflection, I thought that CSS could probably be used to do what was required by creating an independent entity that could be placed in the relative HTML flow and deliver what the Wingdings black disc with white numerals did. The HTML mark-up used is as follows:- •10 The CSS is a little more complex and has been placed in a file named bullets.css. So how do you use it? In the
of your page place the link to the bullets.css file, e.g.
Place the •10 anywhere you want in the HTML, and if you would like a red bullet with a yellow number, then add two separate classes to the tag, e.g. and add the additional styles to your general stylesheet or in the
section of the page, i.e. That's it; the default colors are white numerals on a black bullet, and it has been tested in all IE browsers back to IE5.5 and works equally well in all other modern browsers in Windows, Linux and Mac Operating Systems. An example page is at:- http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/test/wingdings-alt.html ... and it does use an @font-face font to generate the bullets and numerals, as this ensures that only the supplied font gets used as opposed to say "verdana" which isn't normally available in non Windows operating systems. Re: ".. a number of bullets in the document were using the MS Wingdings font, which is shipped with some Windows Operating Systems and/or browsers, but not others." This would be a problem. Special fonts must be supported on the viewer's platform in order to be rendered properly. It's probably better to find an alternative bullet symbol within the character set defined in the head section. Speaking of fonts, it's best if the character set definition is consistent with the intended fonts. Not to do so can cause rendering problems. This should be in a line directly under "
": <.meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> (Comment: UTF-8 is a standard Unicode set; others can also be used; default for Microsoft products seems to be windows-1252. See http://www.w3.org/International/O-charset.en.php.) One could use Billie's suggestion for an image as the bullet symbol. It avoids getting an entire font set for one or two symbols. Be sure to size the images appropriately. I like Barry's suggestion to put the bullet styling into CSS, either in the head section or in a separate file called in the head section. This allows steps like this: 1. Create or get the images to be used as bullets. (You're not limited to any font; I used anchor images in one page, houses in another.) 2. Create class(es) and style it (them) in the CSS -- ul.bullet1 {list-style-image: url(path/bullet1.gif); } ul.bullet2 {list-style-image: url(path/bullet2.gif); } 3. Use it in the HTML -- <.ul class="bullet1"> <.li>text <.ul class="bullet2"> <.li>text>

(Dots precede HTML statements to deactivate them here.) The above is a nested list but you could use the symbols for two different lists. Each item will inherit the symbol for the list its contained in. -rt_/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2012 15:47:12 +1300 From: Barry Carlson <barrycarlson@vodafone.co.nz> Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] need help with bullets please To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com, oxtonaj@escapees.com Message-ID: <50CA9330.8030301@vodafone.co.nz> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed The original posters request for help came about due to the him converting a MS Word document to HTML. Billie, Billie, If you really want to use Wingdings fonts, all browsers will render them provided the font is provided on the page using @font-face. In the case of Wingdings you would need to pay for the font, but there are many similar free fonts available that could be used as a substitute. http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/list/style/Dingbat ... has a few available, and they can be downloaded as a font-face kit. For Alfred's case, the Unicode substitute is the easiest way to go.
