If you installed every toolbar included with program downloads, you wouldn't have a screen left! <G> I had a program that wouldn't install unless another program was installed with it. There are a few things you can try. Open your computer in Safe Mode, then try to uninstall Ask.com which sounds like a toolbar you've installed with another program. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the program that it installed with, then shut your computer down completely, go and have a cup of coffee (or tea or chocolate). When you 've finished it, reboot your computer and reinstall the program again but go to Advanced mode, NOT the "Recommended" alternative. That should give you the choice of what components you install. Uncheck any and all boxes for items you don't want, like toolbars, home pages and search engines. If that doesn't work either use a search engine to find a program that will uninstall the Ask.com toolbar. Remember to scan any and all programs with your anti virus and anti spyware programs before installing them. Once you've removed it, do a search to find all the left over bits. There could be dozens scattered in a variety of places. Manually remove them and use your firewall to block Ask.com from connecting to the net, if it gives you the option. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Thanks, Joan.  I think I should upgrade to latest version of Java as well; Java automatically downloads and upgrades on this puter, but I choose whether or not to install/upgrade.  A lot of things require having Java.  Not sure about 'disabling the 'plug-in', as I'm not truely 'tech savvy', but I can usually find an answer on the I-net.  I've begun to email my writings as attachments to my other email accts. too.  That works as a pretty easy backup for me.  (Especially if a computer breaks, and I don't have an external HD.  And, without programs to 'run' downloaded/installed on a new computer, 9from my broken puter),  the path is broken to run anything from a USB jump, or external drive, or any disks anyway. (My PAF file for example on a USB Jump .zip which I'm working on re-downloading the software.  But misplaced the stupid USB jump and my new Legacy software. (I've been injured badly since Oct. '12, so things are a mess here.) I just can't lose my writings by updating and uninstalling the old Java version though.  My Norton does backup my files too though.  Will check to see if the 6 WORD docs I see as dependent on Java 6, are there in Norton.  Thanks again! I need to get back to work on my rootsweb pages.  I got so frustrated when I used their "WYSIWYG" editor and lost all of my work (hours of work), while trying to publish it.  I can't write in HTML  (had written a basic program in college, but that was so long ago).  Stupidly, I never got a "template" as Pat had suggested.  Always willing to learn though! Or, is that always forced to learn?! <laughs>  I'll be back for help! 3. My objection to Ask was the way it took over ALL Searches, leading me to an overabundance of advertising. Had to manually enter www.google.com, for instance, to do a Google search. Thanks to you folks, it is now gone. Also, my computer did remarkably well (totally passed) on the Test link that was listed. Thanx! I found the same: start in blue, briefly shows red when clicked on but turquoise when a link's been visited. The difference with the visited link colour is because I've changed it. I wonder if the history has been cleared. Perhaps a refresh of the page might revert the links to blue again - unless they've been changed to be red. The only comments I'd make is the names and titles need initial capitals and paragraphs would be useful on longer sections of texts. 3. Maybe uninstall and reinstall Java?  I noticed that Java has that "Ask" box checked on upgrades,  But, I have a question too. Java wants me to upgrade from Java 6 to the newest version, and it will uninstall all previous versions of Java. In a search of my computer to see what programs relied on Java, I found that at least 6 of my WORD docs relied on Java (from when I was using the "professional trial version", unbeknownst to me?)  I can't seem to find an answer to: if I upgrade to the new Java version (7.2, I think) and Java uninstalls Java 6. I'm surprised that your unchecking the box on your download, (assuming it was a Java update/installation, if I recall correctly that it is Java), added the ASK toolbar.  You can "Hide" the toolbar, if you can't uninstall  it.  But, you should be able to uninstall it.  This link might help you with Ask and Chrome (with Java): http://www.zdnet.com/a-close-look-at-how-oracle-installs-deceptive-software-with-java-updates-7000010038/ We are in a "Browser War" with these companies.  And, do note that some browsers do not support or have 'fixes' for problems you might encounter, and may even not support your anti-virus programs.  I've been thinking of changing over to Chrome myself.  It is the number 1 Browser being used by more than 30% of users, but does have it's own vulnerabilities, (mostly imposed my Microsoft!) If you are using Silverlight, or Adobe plug-ins, you are also dealing with Microsoft on some level.  Updates and downloads, as well as 'auto updates' play into this as well. (How do you keep your computer safe without updates, or does Chrome have their own 'vulnerability fixes, auto updates, patches, etc. What kind of computer do you have?  That's the first question.  Because if you have any programs running which show as iexplore, explorer.exe, you have Microsoft's IE running in the background. (Stopping some of these programs/"PROCESSES" can really screw up your computer if you don't know what you are doing (I have to look up everything myself, and still end up w/ questions!)  To see what procesesses are running on your computer, use your "Task Manager" (CTRL+Alt+Delete) but don't hit that twice as it will shut down your puter!  Then, you should be taken to "Task Manager". (I have an HP Win 7 laptop, so these features are sometimes a bit different on earlier and newer versions.) Click that "Task Manager" link,  and check what is actually running on your computer.  I'd almost bet that you have some kind of Microsoft Product running in the background, regardless of what Browser you are using, if your computer is a WINDOWS of any version (which is Microsoft's product).       One poster here gives a 'walk-thru' of how to disable/uninstall ASK: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/ynSDZC_QdYk[1-25-false] Unwanted toolbars are usually caused by a 3rd party software that you may have installed. To summarize steps that got rid of the Ask toolbar: * Check that there are no extensions installed that may be causing these changes. Go to Chrome menu (previously Wrench icon) > Settings > Extensions > if you see any unfamiliar extension that you do not remember installing, try disabling/removing the extension to see it was causing these changes. To disable, uncheck the "Enabled" checkbox next to the extension. To remove, hover over the extension until you see a trash can icon appear, and click on the icon.  * Check Control Panel > Programs for any suspicious files and remove them. * Go to Chrome Settings (chrome://settings/) > Settings > Search > Manage Search Engines > In the Default search settings box, make sure Ask.com is not selected as the defaultI also suggest performing a malware scan to make sure that there are no other suspicious programs remaining that could have installed the Ask toolbar.  There are other, simpler answers on that forum which is a recent posting.  I use Foxfire, so check out that forum for your Google Chrome questions. Yes, you'd need to re-load the page to make it like a 'fresh page', but some browsers like Internet Explorer, might still show your links to you as being already seen (for you).  You looked at the links/worked on them, and the computer 'remembers' that you looked at them (just as the computer will show that you searched for something else and already saw the page (link) by darkening the blue color of the link, and even 'tells' you how many times that you "visited the page").  I agree that you should use capital letters for words and names, (such as "I", instead of "i"; You type a lot in 'lower case' where you do need capital letters). Conn family bath county kentucky shows a good example.  I'd Capitalize the "Place Names".  I might even change the above to: The Conn Family of Bath County, Kentucky This link has some good grammar and punctuation guidelines for free.  Don't buy the book, just click the links needed; example: Apostrophes (link), which might help you with any errors as you also use quite a few words in 'your language' that have apostrophes w/ errors.  Periods where they don't belong, and without capitalizing the next sentence word, as well as few other little things, also distract from your GREAT STORY! Don't change too much, just 'clean it up' a bit.  Don't worry too much about small errors though. I wouldn't change the way that you tell the story though, except for the above suggestions. I like your site!  It's nice to read a good story.  Most sites are just names, dates, links, but no story.  Yours is a refreshing change from that 'cut and dry' kind of usual site we see. Good Luck, and if you need help with the grammar, punctuation, spelling,  give me a holler.   (I'm in a writer's group and had taught English for grades 7-9 (And, I had to learn the books I used, since I was a Social Studies teacher:). I had also taught English to "Home-Bound" students.   I'm not opposed to your 'sound' of your story, that you present by using what is referred to as 'colloquial' language (informal language), or the way that you speak, which is also the way that you write. I feel that your 'language'/'sound' adds to the site! Again, check for where "Capital letters" are needed, and some of your punctuation.  I also like the 'feel' you give to your  writing!  Your 'story-telling' style  is very good, and refreshing!  I can feel the passion, as given in your memories about your lines and your life experiences while growing up with your family.  To me, this kind of writing is often even better than having everything all 'perfect'.  You tell and show a good story!  I was 'there'.  (I could 'see' and almost 'smell' those cedar shavings, and more.  That is good writing.  ('Show' when telling a story) Nice site & layout.  You'll get there with the small issues/corrections.  But, DO keep your 'language/sound' in this work! I'd be happy to help you 'edit' the story, on some level, via email.  It wouldn't take long to make the minor corrections, while maintaining the integrity of your great story.  Write to me privately if you'd like to have some help. I could correct some of the errors and you could just copy/paste them into your page, but you'd still need to add the links. (And, the links would be 'blue', until someone looks at them, presumably you, as you are working on each page.  Then, the links would appear 'red', since you looked at them. I'm not too active on here, and my page hasn't been updated in a long time.  I found it hard to use the "Online Editor" and can't write 'computer language'/HTML.  I lost hrs. of work once, and pretty much gave up on my site.  I probably shouldn't 'weigh in', but I wanted to tell you that I like your site, and why I like it, as well as help with the 'link' question.  I hope that I may have helped in some small way.  Good luck, Anthony!  Don't become discouraged! It makes it easier to read.

    3. Have you installed a new program from the web recently? This happened to me before and a search program had been included as a add on in something I had installed. go to add/remove programs and sort by date installed and see if this happened to you. If so uninstall it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony Conn" <dconn5207@yahoo.com> To: <FREEPAGES-HELP@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2013 5:38 AM Subject: [FreeHelp] links > Why is there links all over my conn family web page they are highlighted > in red? > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > FREEPAGES-HELP-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. ALL Windows machines come with Internet Explorer, so YES, you have IE. You must have IE open some place,. Do a shutdown, NOT standby, sleep or hibernation, wait a couple of minutes, then start up the machine. Once it is started, go and try to uninstall Ask.com, before you do anything else. Once I have clicked on the link to move to a different page then return to the home page, the link then shows purple (normal). If I click on the link it briefly shows red. I don't see anything (at least on the Home Page) that displays in red in Firefox. Did not check other browsers. pat
