It's a free HTML editor. Comes with many bells and whistles. Supports editing many different "languages" [ php, for example ] natively. It's customizable, but you have to use XML to create custom tags [ that's the part I'm not so crazy about - it should be easier ]. It also has a CSS editor, but you have to know style elements to use it. [ for style sheets I prefer CSSED http://cssed.sourceforge.net/ - but it is not so easy to install in Windows. ] It supposedly will upload directly to your site but I've never used that feature. I prefer a separate FTP program. -- “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._

    3. Being an old codger who learned markup language from the old DOS Word/Wordperfect PC word processors, I have never really been satisfied with the wysiwyg html editors I have tried, inserts way too much useless garbage that must be waded through when later editing the file. I have used free Blue Griffon and have found it to be somewhat usable, although as far as I can tell it cannot be set to use more than one external browser to check you work in various browsers. I believe addons are available but you must pay for them. If you stick to the text editor when coding and then use the wysiwyg editor as a way to check your work and make minor changes you can come up with rather clean, light code for you pages. Conversely, use the wysiwyg editor to create your code and then use the text editor to clean up the garbage also works. 3. Thanks everyone, I haven't had a chance to read all of the replies yet since so many emails are buried; been off here a few days.  Yes! These were the links, tutorials and such that I had been wanting again.  (bookmarked on my broken puter!)  Great!  I hope to have time to work on my freepage again sometime soon! So many great people here, and others helping me now, (just when I don't have a lot of spare time though!) Someone helping me "shared" about 30 censuses & more documents!  So, all is not lost!  Just a lot to do, and learn.  It's wonderful, but definitely overwhelming!   But, I know that if I have any questions or problems, that all of you will help me:)!  I'll study all of the links from both "Pat's", and read all of the other replies asap.  And, no, I don't want my pages to be too complicated or have a 'different look'.  You are all wonderful!  Thanks again!     Kathie Buchanan ________________________________ From: Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 6, 2013 8:22 AM Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Cannot Access my freepages website/& more questions >Kathie, You are probably feeling a bit overwhelmed with information right now. 3. Kathie, I wont repeat your original questions. Before you go any further, you will need to go to:- http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ - and enter email addresses you have ever used, and attempt to retrieve your passwords by checking the appropriate website boxes. If you believe that some of the email accounts may well be defunct, then you will need to follow the the "email address is dead" link for further assistance. Once you have retrieved your PW(s) we will be able to help you in setting up your ftp utility. Barry

    3. >Kathie, You are probably feeling a bit overwhelmed with information right now. Once you get the password situation straightened out, here are three resources to get you started: Working With Rootsweb FreePages Accounts EBook which is free http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/rootsweb-freepages-ebook.html Planning a Genealogy Website EBook which is also free http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/genealogy-website-ebook.html You can certainly design a website using a WYSIWYG editor, it is difficult to troubleshoot problems without a bsic understanding of both html and css. I encourage you to learn at least the basics. A good place to start is Pat Asher's site. Help for the Beginning Web Author http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/ While the Rootsweb editor is available, I would select another program to create your pages with. Some of the free ones are listed here: http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm the free ones are listed at the bottom of the page. There are lots of learning resources listed on the page. Quite a few folks will design a site with every page having a "different look." To my way of thinking, this is NOT a good idea. First it makes it much more difficult to update and maintain a site. Secondly, the same look throughout your site lets the viewer know they are still on your site and gives them an idea of what to expect moving around the site. Site wide navigation is a good idea rather than always having to hit the back button or the Home button so you can start again. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first, BUT we were all new to this at one time. Pat G.

    3. Kathie, I thought I'd try to tackle more of your questions. 1. You said you have an ancestry account. But put that aside---yes it is different from Freepages Accounts. 2. You said you DO have your Username and PW for Freepages... right? (don't type it here, I'm just making sure I understand). If you need your password, go here: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ 3. If you have Freepages (free web site at rootsweb.ancestry.com you wanted the File Manager address. First, if you lose this, just remember to Google freepages rootsweb.ancestry.com and it will show at the top of the list. The URL is... http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman/ 4. NO MATTER WHAT, this time you MUST save a copy of ALL your work on your harddrive, for your own piece of mind Never upload without having a copy on your PC...and a back-up, even on a Thumb Drive. That way, you will always have the "last copy". I made a folder called My Webs. Pat G can help you with this. 5. I know money trouble, but if you get a spare $100 you can buy REALLY BIG sizes (but they take up little space) of "Desk Top USB Backup Drive". Check Staples, Office Max, or Target... You can get like a Terabyte size for really cheap. A Terabyte would hold everything from My Documents and you'd still have a few years before you fill it up. USB drives are easy backup devices. 6. There are free What You See Is What You Get WYSIWYG Web Editors -- Again, read through Pat G's help pages to see what is available. 7. Look online for Filezilla (free). It is an FTP program--- it's sole use is to upload or download files. If you use this, people here can help you set it up. It is quick, easy. BUT there are other ways to upload too, so ask others. However, I would get away from rootsweb's Editor if possible--- it's nice to get used to uploading there, when beginning. But it's slow when you get more experience. 8. You mentioned Links that don't work. The List here can help you with those.. But... it might help to get all the stuff above ready first. It might take a few weeks of reading Forums online, comparing, asking for opinions (here) before you pick a Web Editor. But that time will be worth it. You need to feel you have a program you can trust and that is easiest to use. 9. I remember how hard it was to take itty-bitty steps... I wanted to do it "now". Well, I did.... and... a year later, I had to re-do everything --with Pat G's help and Barry's help and Heidi's help (and too many people to list here)! If I had taken a little more time to read online, read this list, compare programs, and grasp what folks were saying (which I didn't understand!), I would have worked more slowly than I did. 10. DO talk to Pat G about getting a Template started... It's like in dressmaking...If you have a pattern, it is easier to make dress after dress without having to make a new pattern every time. Pat G. had a lot of Templates (colors, designs) to choose from. You can even look online for Free Templates to find colors/layout you like, then ask people here to help you change the background color etc. Once you have a template you like and tweaked just like you want it, everything else becomes so much easier.. 11. You said you have a ton of data to organize. For my 1st web site, I took a paper notebook and listed the categories of data I had. Then, I tried to make an outline of how I wanted it arranged on my website... like, under Surnames? By Decade? By Topic?--such as Wills, Deeds... Writing myself some notes on paper really helped me have a better idea what genealogy to pull out first. I also typed data at night--- before I had my website ready--- so I could just copy-paste data onto the web. NOTE: Just do NOT type into MS Word, because it makes too much 'coding' and will NOT make nice web pages. On paper, I also tried to think/write what page should link to another page. Hope these points help as you get ready to enter into webmaking again. Judy

    3. Kathie, Take it one step at a time. This ( http://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/genealogy_html ) is a File Transfer Protocol Address... meaning, you don't click it. Instead, you put that address in to the program you use to "ftp" your pages to your website. Think of that address as if similar to a "human Postal Carrier"== He picks up web data from your house and 'delivers' it to your web site. Read this page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/wizards/ftp.htm I'll let others answer your other questions... Judy

    3. To second Pat A and Heidi: I, too, use FP2003 for editing pages and have found its publishing feature problematic -- especially active vs. passive mode. To work around that, I use a separate FTP utility; some FTP programs can be downloaded free. But, you must use the proper FTP address (not http://) and settings. "No longer supported by Microsoft" means simply that, now, FP2003 is what it is; there will be no program updates or Microsoft online help. It does not mean that the program no longer functions. -rt_/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2013 12:49:22 +0100 From: "W.E.Wardle" <wwardle@ntlworld.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] Cannot Access my freepages website To: <Freepages-Help-L@Rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <A037865D085B4EB0B050CC67F6591345@Laptop> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi, The last time I accessed the files on my website was in 2011. 3. Hi Bill, I know one gets used to a program but why not try the now Free Expression Web4? It is so helpful in pointing out coding errors. From MS description: Expression Web is a full-featured professional tool for designing, developing, and publishing compelling, feature-rich websites that conform to web standards. http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=36179 There are a load of free templates that come with the program and a whole lot more from Cheryl Wise, Pat Geary, and Tina Clarke. All templates are free and there is always excellent advice from these good ladies. 3. Pat A., That link you gave below, linked me to an http: http://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/genealogy_html (not an ftp) The above states this: We're sorry. The page you tried to access is not available The page may have moved, or there may be an error in the address. Please check the address or try one of the resources below.   So, I clicked this one below the above message: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ That's the page I'd used a lot.  My links were in red, that I'd last used on there.  The directory of freepages is fairly good.  I was able to at least change my Homepage name some long time ago, and had added some links and other data, but that was all before the pages URL changed to include the word "ancestry". http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lowery/ is my pitiful page.  I've also noticed that none of my old "ftp" links work for other sites I'd saved data from though. eg: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/bedford/taxlist/1774-tax.txt Not Found The requested URL /pub/usgenweb/pa/bedford/taxlist/1774-tax.txt was not found on this server. ________________________________ Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com Port 80 I'm seeing some references to the above link in a search of the link, but not that data.  Those ftp links were very informative, easily found, and once free. (Sorry the format changed since I copied that data above here; can't undo "italicize" at the moment).  I have some of that data copied from emails to myself, and have a massive WORD 2010 document as "Master File", as well as individual files in .docx format.  How can I upload those .docx files with census images and my notes, etc., or can't I upload them?  I haven't  tried to work on my freepage for a very long time, because once I did get signed in again to update my page/add data, etc, (via "File Manager"?  "File Man"?  I don't have bookmarks on this computer/my battery jack broke), I'd lost all of my many hours of work while "publishing",when using rootsweb's "on-line editor". (WYSIWYG)  So, I gave up.  I was using a Win XP/IE then. Would that matter? I'd been thinking about trying again, but don't know if I can do it correctly.  I don't know what went wrong with "The Editor" not publishing last time. But, I'm a novice at this, and cannot seem to learn <HTML> (although I had to write a Basic Program in college years ago, and did okay (How a Bill becomes Law).  I wish I could learn html but I try and try, and get confused, even with simple tutorials.  "The Editor" mentioned used to be easier to use, or so it seemed.  I don't know what I did wrong, but it didn't work out.  I, too, need to make some edits/changes, since I don't want any wrong data floating around out there, though.  Maybe just delete the entire page/site?  I'm using Mozilla Firefox on a Win 7.  Would I have to use Explorer to use the ftp, (file transfer protocol, right?  I barely understand what that means, but will look it up (again). Or, is something else needed for the 'ftp'?  Some of what many of you write about is beyond my scope of knowledge.  Esp. different kinds of (add-ons?) that some use to build their pages.  I don't have Google Chrome.  "Templates"... I know that some helped me here a long time ago with what to do, how to do (Pat Geary's free tutorials/templates, and such, right?  But, I got away from this page for lots of reasons, besides just the loss of the work.  And, I guess that I am stupidly still building my tree at ancestry, not rootsweb.  I don't even have a subscription to ancestry.com/  Can I switch over?  Should  I switch over?  My familysearch.org/ PAF got locked up with my puter dying.  I'd had that acct., but without needing a password until more recently.  I finally created an acct. and will try to re-download the PAF, and run that .zip.  My data is all over the place, and I must get it manageable.  But, I basically had to start over.  (Money is obviously a problem, so please don't suggest buying this or that to back up and what not.  Lastly, could someone please provide the "sign in" link to edit my page again?  I know that my rootsweb user name/ancestry.com (tree) user PW is different than the PW for my freepage.  I  have my password for my freepage.  Just can't find where to sign in to try again to edit/build it.  I know I asked a lot of different questions here.  I'd started to write before about the above, but didn't send.  Now, I have a ton of questions, again.  Thank you!  Kathie Buchanan ________________________________ From: Pat Asher <pjroots@att.net> To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 3, 2013 9:15 AM Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Cannot Access my freepages website At 07:49 AM 4/3/2013, W.E.Wardle wrote: >Hi,    The last time I accessed the files on my website was in >2011.    I have recently found the need to edit certain pages . > >I use Microsoft Front Page 2003 for my editing and I find that when >I try to upload changes    I cannot connect to >http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hartshorn >I have typed in the correct user name and password to no avail. >Could the answer be that my FP 2003 is no longer supported by Microsoft? > >I am not PC Savvy but it worked well the last time I accessed the website.
