    3. Hi Richard, The main reason is because of access to all for websites. So if you relied on a screen reader to view the internet, which is how a blind person would work, the screen reader scans the source code and the conveys the 'content code' to the reader by 'text-to-speech' or by Braille. Now if you look at your own source code, try 'reading' it to yourself and see what sense it makes to you and then think how a screen reader will interpret it. Not too well I imagine you'd agree? ;-)) Best wishes, Jill -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ralph Taylor Sent: 15 April 2013 01:43 To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] publishing Richard asked: "What is the matter with using MSWord and saving as an HTML/HTM"?

    3. Richard asked: "What is the matter with using MSWord and saving as an HTML/HTM"? If your pages are few or you're not fussy about and never want to change their appearance, it's fine. If your pages are many and you want to experiment with how they look, it will give you many headaches. The problems are (1) "code bloat" (more download overhead than needed) and (2) styling at the elemental level, rather than the site level. (An "element" is a paragraph, heading, list item, etc.) The bloat problem stems from the styling insertion problem; it takes more bytes to have <.p class=MsoNormal>text</p> Than simply <.p>text</p> If you wanted it in boldface, you'd see <.p class=MsoNormal style="bold">text</p> Rather than <.p><b>text</b></p> The class==MsoNormal refers to an insertion in the document's head section: <.style> p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Arial;} </style> The above makes up an "internal style sheet" which will over-ride any external style sheet you want to use for all pages. To change your pages' appearance and make it uniform, you'd have to remove this from every page. Doesn't seem like much here in this simplified example, but it snowballs. The more creative you get, the worse the problems. -rt_/)

    3. I use Expression Web 4 and I would like to recommend this to others as it is so good and far better than many other like programs, I think. There is such a lot of help with both Pat A's and Pat G's websites, to overcome the hurdles of learning CSS and HTML. Barry too is always willing to lend a hand and offers practical advice and often goes out of his way to show how to do something on his bristowe websites. EW4 gives clean accessible code which is surely the aim of us all? ;-) Best wishes, Jill -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nancy Fowler Sent: 14 April 2013 17:52 To: Freepages-Help-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [FreeHelp] message cannot connect to ftp server I previously uploaded html pages to my account at users.freepages.rootsweb.com with Fetch using their free trail. I thought, "Easy.. just copy and paste it to my webpages later." NOT. If I typed City, State, like John Smith was born in Allegheny Co., PA, then MS Word added in code around every piece of it! Word added long codes for just about everything, dates, fonts, paragraphs, etc.!! I spent countless hours cleaning up the code... it would have been easier if I'd never typed it in Word--- OR---just copy the text to Windows Notepad text editor to clean out the code... but then, you have to re-do italics, bold, etc. So it just is a waste of time to type in MS Word for a webpage. 3. FrontPage bills itself as a WYSIWYG editor. Expression Web does not. Neither does Dreamweaver as far as I know. One way to learn how your editor works and what kind of code it creates, is to work in Split Screen mode. Half of the screen will give you Design View and the other half code view. That way you can see what code is created when you push certain buttons. It really does not matter which editor you use, if you have a basic understanding of html and css, and look at the code view, you can create cleanly coded html pages. Even FP which adds all sort of "stuff" can create clean code. You just have to understand how your particular editor works. A plain text editor will of course work BUT you have to learn HTML and CSS in order to know what to actually type for the code. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm Resources for web editors as well as learning HTML and CSS. You might try FP Cleaner for EW for which I included the link in my last post. EW requires netframework which has been known to cause problems. Depending on which version of EW you are using and having a problem with, you might want to download and install the free versions which is available here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36179 Even though the download indicates it is a trial, it is not. 3. I use Sharepoint Designer which is a free from Microsoft I am on 2007 version <http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21581> I moved to it from FP2000 and found it fairly easy to adjust whereas when I've looked at Expression Web I realised there was a learning curve. But I use Filezilla to FTP my pages to Rootsweb Ron Lankshear -Sydney NSW (from London-Shepherds Bush/Chiswick) try my links http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lankshear/ On 14/04/2013 07:58, Heidi Utley wrote: > May have to find a different web editor, but have > trouble with Expression Web. Would you have any suggestions for something easier? ============= There are quite a few free web editors out there but I have only really used FP and EW since they were first released. Expression Web is a professional level editor and does require you to learn CSS and HTML in order to use it successfully. Many of the folks I work with who do web design professionally use both EW and Dreamweaver and move back and forth between the two. EW is easier to use BUT DW has better extensions/addins. That being said EW is now available for FREE since MS decided to drop support of frontend web development. Some of the free ones I have found are listed http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm Scroll down to web authoring software. As Ron indicated Sharepoint Designer 2007 is free and is the most like FP2003 than any of the others and will let you continue to use some of the features of FP2003 although it is based on EW version 1. Many of the tutorials written for EW will work with SPD. There are lots of resources/tutorials for learning EW which can be found on these sites. http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ http://www.frontpage-to-expression.com/ This is a companion site for the ebook BUT there are lots of FREE resources on the site. http://any-expression.com/ http://by-expression.com/ A tool I recommend for using with both FP and EW is Steve Easton's FP Cleaner http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and for using with EW4 http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/ew4.htm Pat Expression Web 4 Tutorials From Install to Publish and More Updated May 2012 to include changes with SP 1 and 2 - F REE http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ew4-tutorials-ebook.html
