    1. [FreeHelp] Websites Not found for Editing...Missing from listing, yet accessible via links
    2. Audrey Shields Hancock
    3. Listing of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/HANCOCK/ websites does not list two of my webpages which I am trying to find and access for editing. I edited them last October without any difficulty, but now they aren't even listed. Who can I contact to discover what is happening? I can get to the two webpages via links on my homepage http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grannyapple/HANCOCK/HANCOC K%20FAMILY%20HOME.html, however, I can only read them and they not accessible for editing. When I get to them, here is what shows as the URLs. Notice "grannyapple" is missing after ~: grannyapple/ Homepage Link gets me to: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hancockgroup3/Chart3-DNA-H OME.html Should read: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grannyapple/hancockgroup3/ Chart3-DNA-HOME.html Hancock Lineages gets me to: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hancockgroup3/Chart3-Genea logies.html Should read: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grannyapple/hancockgroup3/ Chart3-Genealogies.html Since I use basic HTML, and my basic HTML is changed evidently automatically by a robot to a more complicated HTML, these webpage links appear without http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/ etc. As you can see...it merely show the tilde ~ in front of hancockgroup3 etc. Can anyone enlighten me? How can I get access to edit these pages if they are not showing up on my Listing? Audrey ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I can get to these websites if I go to this website: HANCOCK FAMILY HOMEPAGE http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~grannyapple/HANCOCK/HANCOC K%20FAMILY%20HOME.html And then I click on the link for: HANCOCK-HANDCOCK CHART 3 DNA COUSINS by Audrey (Shields) Hancock DNA Relationships--Known and Unknown, Somehow DNA relatives connected to Benjamin Hancock of VA and his Descendants of VA, KY, OH and Beyond. Homepage Link gets me to: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hancockgroup3/Chart3-DNA-H OME.html Hancock Lineages gets me to: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hancockgroup3/Chart3-Genea logies.html

    3. It's obvious that there is a "hancockgroup3" site on Rootseweb Freepages. There is lots of pages on the site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hancockgroup3/ On 05/11/2013 10:24 AM, Audrey Shields Hancock wrote: > Listing of http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/HANCOCK/ > websites does not list two of my webpages which I am trying to find and > access for editing. There are two things you can do if you find messages offensive: either use the delete key which every computer comes with -or- complain *offlist* to the list admin at the following address: FREEPAGES-HELP-admin@rootsweb.com Abusing another list member is contrary to good netiquette. Could you please remember to take the advice given at the top of the digest: <quote> When replying to a digest message, quote only the specific message to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. Remember to change the subject of your reply so that it coincides with the message subject to which you are replying. <quote> -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

Perhaps you would care to enlighten me as to why you find my message so unsuitable for this mailbox. In my opinion you are NOT the right sort of person to be on a Helpline!!! Valerie Lirakis

The comment was not directed at you or your post. It appeared to come from someone who does not understand how a mailing list works. When you subscribe to a mailing list at RootsWeb, you receive a copy of EVERY post made to the list. Some may be about a subject in which you are interested, but others may not. This list has been quiet for a few weeks, so the sudden flood of posts and responses was unexpected by this subscriber. I have written to her privately explaining how to unsubscribe. 3. IMHO, another issue because new Freepages users are automatically subscribed in digest mode. inexperienced list users most often just hit "Reply" and their e-mail is configured to include the previous post in the reply. As things progress the messages just get longer and longer with the digest being sent and resent over and over. New users should be subscribed in individual e-mail mode. It doesn't substantially increase the number of posts and lessens the repeat issue. As a general rule the list is pretty quiet. For all those in digest mode, I suggest you unsubscribe from the digest and resubscribe to the individual e-mails. I did it years ago and haven't regretted it a bit. 3. Thanks to Pat and Billie for your replies. I have done as you suggest and created multiple pages with a hyperlink. That is the way I've done them in the past, but this time I felt I wanted something different. Can you suggest another software program that would be compatible with F.P. I want to transfer from my desk top to lap top, but unfortunately haven't got the installation disk for F.P. Having got used to that over the years I would be reluctant to change to something more complicated. 3. This interested me and I send the link below on this subject. It may helpful to do as suggested here in breaking up a long page of text. I don't like long pages and tend you move off the site, but that is probably the age of my old eyes. http://webstyleguide.com/wsg3/7-page-design/6-page-width-line-length.html My best wishes, Jill Glamorgan Mailing List's website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glamorgan/ -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Geary Sent: 08 May 2013 15:02 To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Headers and Footers At 09:54 AM 5/8/2013, you wrote: >IF it is REALLY important that your page have the page breaks like a >Word document or PDF there is a way to accomplish it. Extremely long pages - many thousands of lines - can take a very long time to load over a slow connection and if you are using word can sometimes cause a computer to freeze. Another solution is to create your pages and have an arrow or something at the bottom to indicate go to next page. Example: http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ew4/ scroll to bottom. What would be the next page in the ebook uses an arrow and next with a link to the next page. pat ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FREEPAGES-HELP-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Just to clarify/add to what Pat and Billie have already said. Your problem seems to be less with FrontPage than a conflict between MS Word's engineering and that of the World Wide Web, which relies on hypertext markup language (HTML). On the Web, each "page" is a separate HTML file -- though page files can be linked to one another with hyperlinks. For the sort of use you're describing, I'd suggest links for "Home", "Previous" and "Next". A way to have common headers and footers is to use an include command; the same header and/or footer files get called into each page as needed. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this: SSI (server-side includes) and FrontPage includes. Making a HTML file isn't Word's strongest suit. It often has the results you experienced and, also, bloats the file with inefficient code through heavy reliance on inline styling of each element. In particular, footnotes (at the bottom of each Word page) get converted to endnotes (at the end of the HTML document). -rt_/)
