Whilst I agree with the main thrust of what you are saying, I think it's also up to the person who's created the site and what THEY want, what THEIR purpose for the site is. If it's purely to keep a record of the family, then the title is fine. If it's to inform others researching the same family, then an appropriate sub title would probably be useful, something like *All in My Family* /The History of the <name> Family of <place>/ or *All in My Family* /The Life and Times of the <name> Family of <place>/ Not quite the same thing but along the same lines; I have a couple of blog sites, one of which is called Of Books, Bears and Bodies. It won't mean much to anyone else but it concerns my three main interests. I don't much care whether anyone choses to go there (there's nowt there atm anyway). It's more my musings. I am one of those folks who believes that every site should have sitewide navigation so that once someone gets deep into your site, they do not have to go back to the home page to look around for what they want. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/creating-site-navigation.htm Example: http://www.gravematters.org.uk/ no matter where you go on the site, you can navigate the rest of the site. If you are going to use a table to present your data (which is a good choice) make the column headings part of the table. Just change td to th for the heading rows. That will keep the headers with the appropriate column. If this is the main page for this section of your site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/edgworth_files/edgworth.htm I would rename the main page index.html so that a link to that section would be http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/edgworth_files/ and rather than edgeworth_files, I would name it edgworth-congregation-church which is a more descriptive name. The other suggestion I would offer is to change http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/ so it includes a better description of what your visitor can find on this site and links. Example: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ildewitt/ includes a brief description and what can be found on the site. If you navigate to any of the inside pages such as (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ildewitt/obituaries-name-ghi.html) the side navigation allows you to go where ever you might want. You also might want to consider adding a search function to your site. There are lots of free ones out there. See http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/adding-search-engine.html Anyway, just a few suggestions. pat Working With Rootsweb FreePages Accounts EBook http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/rootsweb-freepages-ebook.html Planning a Genealogy Website EBook 2nd Edition http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/genealogy-website-ebook.html

    1. [FreeHelp] "All in My Family" Re: FREEPAGES-HELP Digest, Vol 8, Issue 53

    3. Hi Rhonda , If nobody mentioned this yet... Unlike books or articles where creative titling are standard, the Internet // WWW need descriptive information. If you think about people researching, they will look specifically for X Family.. like Jones Family, William Jones Family, or these combinations: Xname genealogy Xname genealogies Xname family+location (specific, like X County, X State) Few people will Google the words "All in my Family". Your website will get "lost" among billions that include generic words "All" "in" "my" and "family". If you use an "on site" Search Box say from Google Webmaster Tools that will help, but if you want different web spiders to index your pages, you need descriptive words. As well, for the Rootsweb Listing, it would be *very helpful* to use some family name(s) in the title. Think about your primary research topic, let's say it is the family Allen. You'll help other researchers if you appear under A as "Allen family from Georgia and Related Lines" than any generic Title Tag. Drop the "My" ... it's assumed if you're doing all this work, it's "my family" (e.g. "yours"). Family, though very meaningful to each of us, is not descriptive for THIS Specific family/families. It leaves too much guesswork about what I'd find... so if I was just browsing RW's index, I'd visit more descriptive titles because I'd know better what I might find. Also under where you have your title tag, it would help to have a description. Here is an example from one of mine (leave out the dots before meta <....meta name="description" content="Index One-Room Schools, Primary (Grade Schools), Secondary (High Schools), Colleges / Universities. Research in Little Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania research and genealogy, newspaper articles, biographies, family trees, histories."> I used the wording Index One-Room Schools because that page was my "index.html" page. On other pages, I am more specific, like Wherry One-Room School, and I repeat that same wording ON my page as the on-page Title. So even though your Welcome banner is very, very nice, use a title on the page as well, like Samuel Burk and Related Families. Even though we all have numerous related lines, pick one to emphasize... that draws people who are looking for that family...then they'll find all the other families. A description can be short, like: Allen and Burke Families of xxx County, Georgia. I made mine long descriptions, with the 2nd half a 'baseline statement" to make sure I got in there "Washington County, Pennsylvania". Google for meta+keywords ... you should include that tag also. Go to different Freepages and look at View Source (code). Look at the top in the Source to see different meta tags, and Google meta tags to see the various types you can use. Don't get overwhelmed with all the new info... I didn't know this stuff either when I started. Do look at "Google Webmaster Tools" ... it's easy to set up and makes sure Google indexes your pages. 3. Oh...my gosh! I found my notes...I do have two accounts...I remember now! How wonderful of you to come to my aid and help me jog my memory. I am so sorry to have created more work for you. I am soooo embarrassed! Thank you both so much for your help. Your kindness is most appreciated. Now to try to access my account under "hancockgroup3".
