I am sure there is a way to add a background image using your WYSIWYG editor, but the specific directions will depend on the program you are using. Look for a menu for page layout/design. It is often in the same menu where you specify a font face, link colors, etc. However, adding it directly to your HTML is very easy to do. Just add the background attribute to your BODY tag. The directions are here: http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/basichtml.htm#backgrnd Pat A.

I started off with WYSIWYG i think that is how it is. As I got to working on the different pages. I is coming to me that I would like a Back Ground image that I would like to have. Now I understand that there is HTML way of doing it. But can I do this with WYSIWYG feature? If come one could direct me please I would appreciate. I am treating this as if I am a total beginner and lets face it I am.. Thank you so much Stan

    3. Kathie, FileMan (File Manager) at RW is a pain to learn because it does not address the learning curve for new webmakers. Let me tell you what I did... even though I quickly abandoned using FileMan for *any* actions. There are different Categories... Genealogy, Family, Miscellaneous (misc), Schools, etc. FIRST, change to one you have NOTHING in. At the top, you will always see which one you are "inside". Notice, if you never made a page for THAT category, nothing appears below. Let's use Schools, ok? FIRST, go to the bottom and just look at the different items you can do-- where you can take actions. Make sure you are "in" the Schools category. Create/make a page (just say Hi on it ). Save As index.html (all lowercase). If you made the page in FileManager, save it there. If you made it on your computer, go to the bottom of FileMan...Where you upload files. I think it gives 3 blanks, but you can increase that if you ever need to. You will click Upload, Browse to where on your computer you have your new index.html page. Click on the file name so it appears on the FileMan box. Click Upload. After, click F5 to refresh the web browser. Now you should see 1 file, index.html. Click the link e.g. the name "index.html" -- it will open, so you see your page just like anyone could see it. If it opens... you made "a page", saved it, uploaded it. Great. Now, hit back browser Arrow (pointing left, top of the browser). You will be back inside Fileman. Now, go to the bottom again, I think on the right... You will see a place to make a Folder. Make one called images (lowercase). Hit F5 to refresh. Check again at the top to be in the main directory "schools". You should see your index.html PAGE and your new images directory. Great! Now click the images directory.... Note, nothing there (no files). IF you upload images, you will need to be "in" the images folder FIRST. Go back to the main directory, so you see index.html and your images directory. Now, click the radio button (the blank circle) next to images directory. NOTE anytime you make a circle dark, you will make your next action happen "in or on" that item. Go to the bottom.... look for Delete Directory. Make sure images directory circle is dark... Make SURE you are still "in" the schools directory/website.. Now, delete that images directory. Remember, it has no files in it yet...we are simply "playing" for now. Delete it. NOTE it asks you to confirm. ALL action is permanent. That's why we are using an empty directory (images). Now, remember how you made the images directory? (see above).... Re-make the images directory. This helps you get beyond being afraid of taking actions using Fileman. Again, it has nothing inside. Click ON the "images" folder/directory so you are "inside" it (nothing there). Find a small image/picture on your harddrive. Go to the bottom of Fileman on the left and Upload, Browse to that small jpg, and click upload. Let it upload. Hit F5 to refresh. Now you should see whatever.jpg inside your images folder. Great! Don't worry, you can always delete it. But first... Notice that if you want a picture, a webpage, "in" a certain place, you must be in the correct folder//directory. People refer to directories as levels too. If I am at the index.html page, I am in the top level I can see of "schools" category/folder/website. Let's say I add a folder inside the images directory... each "folder" becomes it's own "directory" on the web site. If I link page in one folder to a page in another folder (like lacing my shoes), or if I put another folder inside a folder like images 2nd folder smiths inside images, I can "drill down" in the web site to new places. For this practice session, you might now say "But I don't want a schools website!" That's fine... you just need to delete what you made. Make sure you are "in" the images folder/dir... click it. Highlight the radio button next to whatever.jpg ... go to the bottom... delete the FILE (note FILE is the type of item you are deleting). Click F5/refresh. Next, get out of "images", so you see index.html and your images folder/dir. Highlight the radio button next to "images" folder/dir "in" your "schools" website (look at top, it tells you the http place you are in). Go down and delete DIRECTORY (images). Click F5/refresh. Now you have only index.html. Again, just to get in the habit, check at top... are you still "in" schools? If so, highlight index.html... go to bottom, delete FILE. Now, your schools website is empty again. You can "play" like this as much as you need, until you feel more confident with Fileman. Now, for your REAL website, ALWAYS make/save the files on your Personal Computer, under Folder called "My Webs" and if you use "genealogy" website, make a "genealogy" folder under My Webs. Put an index.html page inside the "genealogy" folder. After you get more comfortable with Fileman---OR with an Editor and FTP uploader, people can help you make/upload pages. Filezilla is a free uploader and easy to learn. Judy

If you want to change the contents of a file, you must SAVE your changes before exiting the program. If you simply want to view the contents of the file, you can open it to view, then close it when you are through viewing. No changes will be made. When creating a new file, again you must SAVE that file before exiting the program. If you use the WYSIWYG editor in File Manager to create a page, "saving" it will also publish it to the web. Save it with a new/different file name unless you want to overwrite an existing page. Pat A.

Create a folder on YOUR computer to hold the pages of your site. Select whatever editor you want to use, be it a WYSIWYG editor or Notepage of whatever. Create your pages on YOUR computer then publish them to the freepages server. You ca certainly use filemanager although I prefer using FIleZilla which is free or my web editor. If you are working within the filemanage using the ROotsWeb editor make sure you SAVE the page first then exit the browser. You should not lose any work. The only copy of your site should not be on the freepages server. You need a copy of your site on YOUR computer. This advice goes for anyone who has only the online copy of their site. As for learning HTML and CSS, there are many FREE resources. Take it slowly - a few bites at a time. There is a large list here http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm all I believe are free. To stop working on a site/page, just save your work and exit the program. To work with any of the templates, save them to your computer, unzip them to wherever on your computer you keep your website files. As an example I am using this one http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/css-layouts/april-daisies/index.html which unzips to a folder called april-daisies. I simply copied and pasted your content into that particular template. Your are currently using The Home Page of Kathie Buchanan as the title to your page. I would encourage you to choose something that is more descriptive of the page. Not many folks are going to search for that when they are looking for a certain family. There has been an ongoing discussion of naming pages earlier so look back through the recent emails and find it or I can send the link to Pat Asher's page. Change the links on the left side to link to other pages on your site. As the site grows just add to the links. If you don't need or want the top menu, you can remove that section of the template. The templates as well as the css are commented so you can tell where one section begins and ends. Always make sure to view your pages in a browser to see how they display as you work. Save the page often while you are working. The templates are meant to be edited to include your graphics and your colors. But to do that you need to understand both html and css. They are only meant to be samples of a certain layout or style. Any of the templates on the Expression Web site are meant to work with EW and are coded for that program. They will certainly work with other web editors or notepad but the download link is for an EW web package. If you want to use any of them, let me know and I can zip it up and send it to you or post it so you can dl it. I'll read through the rest of the email later this morning and try to answer the rest of your questions. pat

A style inserted "inline", e.g. <p style="font-family:verdana;color:red"> will take precedence over a style declared in the <head> of your page, and those by an external stylesheet. 2. A style declared in the <head> section, e.g. <style> p {font-family:verdana;color:blue} </style> will take precedence over an external sylesheet. 3. This leaves the external stylesheet, e.g. <head> <link rel="stylesheet" href="my-styles.css"> </head> which sets the "global" styles for the whole of your site. It can be over-ridden on a page basis by a style set as per (2), and on an item by item basis by that set in (1). Barry

    3. I was sure someone would have given an answer to your main question by now. I haven't used filemanager in forever [ I think I did use it one time back in the dark ages ], but I would not think that closing the browser window would cause you to lose anything unless you have told it, filemanager, to delete something. I would imagine that filemanageer is simply showing you a listing of what is in your sites directories and giving you choices of what to edit, delete or whatever. It doesn't do anything until you specifically tell it what to do. On 05/15/2013 02:25 AM, Kabe wrote: > Thank you, Billy. 3. Thank you, Billy.  I'm just letting the window in the browser open until I can find out if I can just close it w/o losing data, and copying what little I have there.   Saving all links.   I'm not using IE, so I wonder about that. (Bluefish) I have 'old arthritic hands' too, and a brain to match, it seems!  I'll wait for an answer about closing the window; stay signed in.   I found a bunch of emails off- list that explained more too.  Buried since April in emails.  I think I need to stick to Pat Geary's links, downloads, book, and (changeable) templates, then go from there, using IE, not Mozilla Firefox. Not so much to lose as long as I appear to have an acct. Otherwise, I could have a wordpress. Kathie Buchanan From: Billie Walsh <bilwalsh@swbell.net> I found somewhere a page that showed the main style elements and gave a kind of example of it's use. That is how I learned styles. For external style sheets I use a program called CSSED http://cssed.sourceforge.net/ You don't have to do it that way but I find it the easiest method for me. Basically makes it point-n-click to make style sheets. As an HTML, text based, editor I prefer Bluefish. http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/index.html It's a very powerful editor. You can do HTML and CSS in any text editor but I like dedicated programs because they make a lot of it point-n-click. That makes a big difference with my poor old arthritic hands.

    3. Hi again Pat, (and all)   I got my freepage PW & Username for same from my original acct. info email, and signed into my (2008) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lowery/  (Before, the email came from rootsweb alone, but seems to have me "in", even w/o "ancestry" in the original email addy. (something you mentioned in your book) I am signed in now, (fileman), and am afraid to move for fear of losing what I have there already.  (I lost a lot of work there several years ago).  I did look at the other directories, then went back to "Genealogy".  So, do I need to click "Refresh Directory" before closing so I don't lose anything already published, or will my work be gone?  (No new work added, but I did click on the other "helps" at top to "create a webpage", then closed it, since I didn't want to over-write anything (IF that is what would happen; probably wouldn't, I'm thinking, since I didn't 'publish'?).  Will I lose anything if I just close the page?  Do I need to click "Refresh Directory" so as not to lose anything (since I am not ready to make changes, but did 'look around' there?) before closing the page I'm signed into?  Nothing is showing that I am "Logged In" in upper right hand corner though.  But I am Logged in, and could work on the pages, it seems, or rather, shows that I'm 'in' and ready to edit, etc. since I see: Buchanan  (underlined in blue like a link; probably because I changed my page name a few years ago, and would like to change it again.  I didn't click it.) buchanan_lohr.html  (view) (link) index.html  (view) (link) (I didn't check any "bullet" on any of the above yet either.) (I did not click "Keep me logged in" when I signed in with my user name and password.)  Over the weekend, I read one of the links given with some 26? pages of how to write in HTML (Huber's page link, I think).  I learned how to write HTML (into a Notepad which told me to save the .txt as a .html NOT .txt) but learning CSS is another matter.  That one site wanted me to pay, so I looked at others, and got totally confused, even though it looks easier, but I still need to use HTML tags/attributes or no?  Argghhh! I read Pat Geary's book, and looked at web-creations Templates (and all links below, as well as others linked, but nothing tells me HOW TO STOP WORKING, (Safely close the browser w/o losing work, if I didn't do anything but sign in.)   I don't know how to incorporate a template if I already have a page, or even if I can do so:  I have "Homepage of Kathie Buchanan", without a template.  I'm thinking I'd need to start over?  I'm copying my webpage data to Notepad, but don't know if I should save as .txt or .html (I saw here NOT to use WORD (I have Word 2010 (.docx is what I usually use for writing, and can embed images)  But WORD causes a 'bloated" look, it was said in Free-Help emails of late.   So, I shouldn't use Word to copy my data on my site into, before I delete all and add a template?  Then using HTML: <html> <head> <title> Buchanan Genealogy  (since I want to change the name of the page "Homepage of Kathie Buchanan" on the page, but would also have to change the page name which would remain as a ~lowery link, which can't be changed) </title> </head> <body> (add what I have already written on my page for example, with change tags for Fonts, font color,  <br>, <p>, other tags, etc.) </body> <html> (Above would be correct, with using the 'edit' choices on page at fileman/rootsweb when signed in; what is already there to use, (without any downloads for other editors), but NOT "WYSIWYG HTML Edit"; Use "HTML Edit"?) I also created a "New Folder" in my documents.  (my_genealogy)  I'm pretty sure that I understand how the sub folders or those above, (and below) "my_genealogy" find the data files in html uploads (according to pagetutor.com/ who really did make building a website w/ HTML seem simple).  I believe that I CAN now write in HTML (had an 'a-ha' moment, and it all of the sudden seemed so easy.  I was hoping to try some now.  But have 'stage fright', for lack of a better word, and still don't understand how to choose HTML or WYSIWYG Editor at freepage.  I may have chosen BOTH/done that wrong before, when I lost so much data.   Choose HTML ONLY there right?  Before I do that, I'd copy data that is on 3 pages into Notepad ("page1.html", "page2.html", etc. or other titles as I create new data for the pages); recreate tags for hyperlinks in html), then upload the saved Notepad.html  docs,  right?) I also do not understand how or if the Templates would work if data is already there.  (No offense, but none of them are what I would want, unless I could change the pictures from say "Floral Inspiration" or "Tor House" to something more of my own; something that reflects me (not that they aren't beautiful!)  http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ew-site-templates.html  If I download a Template, am I just using the 'format' and then can change the images (I agree w/ keeping pages basically the same, and pics slow down, (eg: "1910_census_baker_marcellus.gif"  but all lower case, no spaces, right?)  Also, only a few of my (3) pictures are saved as .gif,  so I'd need to Image convert from JPEG, then think "resize"'. (and see even more downloads for doing that.)  http://www.convertmyimage.com/  any good?  It's a free download.   Does your program (below) do that for me?  I'd also need to download the program to download the template:  Expression 4.0, 3.0, or whichever listed.  Right? Some no longer work from Frontpage, correct?  (pagetutor suggested not using Frontpage, Netscape, or others when creating a webpage with HTML. For right now, I just want to get OUT of my site w/o losing anything.  (I had some problems over the weekend with this computer...long story short; this laptop was originally my son's and at my mother's house.  When we got High speed and wireless there, THIS computer was the "Homegroup #1" puter, and then mom got a desktop (computer#2).  The Belkin wireless needs re-set and the PW was changed, (while on my webcam w/ my son who wanted to set up a WEP (Personal-PSK) to play an interactive game on Nintendo DS;  we both got kicked off the internet, and I am dealing with Belkin tomorrow to get my mom's reconnected, and to get mine out of the Homegroup (since I am hooked into a LAN at my house w/ this laptop/Network), so I have to take this puter back to her house, plug hers into the router, then make hers the Homegroup, then "leave this Homegroup, BUT will all my documents and pics that are 'shared' be on this computer still?"  Double ARGGHH!  Lastly, I disallowed an update to Java 7.1 today, and see that was possibly a mistake since eventually I might need Java script to write 'computer language' with (according to pagetutor.com/), so I'm having a messed up time of things.  (Read the update was vulnerable and even magazines were saying not to ugrade and even uninstall Java.  But, I see that quite a few of my Word doc depend on Java.  My main worry was if the files would still be there since a clean install of Java removes the previous version, and I'm a writer/ don't want to lose my work).  I need an ftp (File Transfer Protocal)   and see that I have a File Transfer Program from Microsoft, version 6.1 (more numbers), (not an FTP, right?) but a using Mozilla Firefox, so hmmm... I see Mozilla has a download for "ftp".  Downloads are going to take up a lot of space and my computer is almost full due to this being my son's old puter with large files for computer games and such.   If someone can answer just one question for me:  Can I just CLOSE the fileman with all my page data ready to edit without it being deleted?  There is no "log out", since technically I'm not showing as "logged in" but am (I believe I have another username & PW for other rootsweb acct. besides freepages, which may or may not be the same as my ancestry.com user name & PW;   I know it's not the same as for a freepage.) And, I tried all the other links on freepage "Help", which is basically just like starting from nothing, but did I do "something" just by clicking those?  Do I need to "refresh Directory" if I only moused over the other directories?  (well, one might have gone into the "genealogy box", but I changed it back to "genealogy".  I'm definitely not ready to do anything!  Scared to death, really.  (I always used WYSIWYG, but it's been since 2010 since I'd updated anything, and Pat doesn't recommend, plus I lost all my work before when using that.)  Maybe I'm just too stupid to do any of this? Sorry so long.   Thanks for your informative book, Pat Geary. (and all of the many links).  I'm just overwhelmed, yet was feeling confident that I COULD write a bit of html or try.  But, you all seem to use use CSS, and I haven't learned that yet. ("Walk before you learn to run", then buy, pagetutor.com/ for CSS got in my way, but I found some others for free; still, confused now.  CSS looks easier?  But, one still has to know HTML, right?  I just don't want to waste what little time I have and wonder if I should just give this up and maybe try wordpress or something?  I have Legacy software, including extra disk (pay for/gift) but misplaced it, and this puter battery jack is breaking now too. )   Exasperated, Kathie Buchanan ________________________________ From: Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 6, 2013 8:22 AM Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] Cannot Access my freepages website/& more questions >Kathie, You are probably feeling a bit overwhelmed with information right now. Once you get the password situation straightened out, here are three resources to get you started: Working With Rootsweb FreePages Accounts EBook which is free http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/rootsweb-freepages-ebook.html Planning a Genealogy Website EBook which is also free http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/genealogy-website-ebook.html You can certainly design a website using a WYSIWYG editor, it is difficult to troubleshoot problems without a bsic understanding of both html and css. I encourage you to learn at least the basics. A good place to start is Pat Asher's site. Help for the Beginning Web Author http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pasher/ While the Rootsweb editor is available, I would select another program to create your pages with. Some of the free ones are listed here: http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/resources.htm the free ones are listed at the bottom of the page. There are lots of learning resources listed on the page. Quite a few folks will design a site with every page having a "different look." To my way of thinking, this is NOT a good idea. First it makes it much more difficult to update and maintain a site. Secondly, the same look throughout your site lets the viewer know they are still on your site and gives them an idea of what to expect moving around the site. Site wide navigation is a good idea rather than always having to hit the back button or the Home button so you can start again. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first, BUT we were all new to this at one time. Pat G.

    3. Thanks to all those who have replied with help and advice regarding my website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/edgworth_files/edgworth.htm There's a lot to take on board here, and it may take a while for me to sort it all out. However, one thing I forgot to mention in my earlier message is that I cannot get the font right on the index page. Although in the code it says Verdana color #993300 all the way through this is not what's showing on the screen, but a variety of fonts and colours. Any explanation as to why that is? Valerie

All styling is done via the external style sheet which is attached to the page, http://www.css-layouts.org/valerie/site.css To make a change in any of the font families, font size or color, you make the change in the style sheet. Clicking the arrow takes you to the next page although I would consider adding a link to the various pages on the menu. It is something you might want to consider for future use. pat

    3. I am seeing the Verdana font. So that is working. There are a few places in the document where the font color is specified as #000000, or black. What's weird is the places where the specified color is ignored. It might work in one line and not work in the next. This is a case where you have to be able to read and understand the HTML code to at least some extent In the first and third paragraphs where FP place this: <a style="text-decoration: none; font-family: style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> If you remove the first style element so that it reads : <a style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> That paragraph works properly. The second paragraph is a bit different. FP wrote: <a style="text-decoration: none; font-family:Verdana" style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> You need to remove the first style so that it reads : <a style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> For the date below your name: <a style= "&lt;span; font-family:Verdana" style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> Again remove the first style element so that it reads : <a style="font-family: Verdana; color: #993300"> On 05/14/2013 11:19 AM, Valerie lirakis wrote: > Thanks to all those who have replied with help and advice regarding my > website > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/edgworth_files/edgworth.htm > There's a lot to take on board here, and it may take a while for me to > sort it all out. > > However, one thing I forgot to mention in my earlier message is that I > cannot get the font right on the index page. 3. Thanks to Barry for your help. I'm not sure about this as I tried it out on one of the pages already uploaded, and it didn't work, so I've done without the symbol altogether and just stayed with the text. I've now uploaded my web pages and these can be viewed at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boltongenealogy/edgworth_files/edgworth.htm I would appreciate any feedback you can give me - I'm sure there will be shedloads! Is this because F.P. doesn't support it?" F.P. (FrontPage) DOES support the character symbols Barry gave. My basic advice is to worry less about what FrontPage supports and more about what HTML supports. It's HTML that governs what viewers see on your pages; FrontPage is simply a tool to make the pages. Proprietary features come and go; HTML is the standard. I tested the four arrow codes specifically with FP 2003, which has four view options: Design, Split, Code and Preview. The arrows appear as they should in all four. When seen through a web browser, they also appear as they should. However, I had to enter the HTML codes directly (in the Code window of the Split view). Had I typed "&uarr;" into Design view, each letter would have been converted individually -- for example, "&" would have become "&amp;". An alternative would be to use the Insert -> Symbol feature of FP in Design view. Click the Insert tab on the top menu bar, then Symbol from the dropdown menu. From the (lengthy) list of available symbols, choose one of the arrows and click Insert, then Close. Then inspect the results in either Code view or the top window of Split. But -- thinking about this -- you may not want any of these symbols. You may want a graphic arrow image instead. It can be more obvious on the page and the image can be used as a link. -rt_/)
