Since I have a large number of images this system works better for me. Files/folders/images are named using lowercase letters with hyphens rather than underscores. WHY? Cause that is how I learned originally. I think the important thing to remember is be consistent with whatever system you use. If you are handcoding, you need to be really careful when you are typing links. For me that is a non issue as I browse to the file and the link is created that way. pat (the other one)

    3. Judy, You may be thinking of index.html and the listing in the Freepages directory. That file name must be all lower case in order to be recognized by the indexing bot. However, all other file names may be upper or lower case, or any mixture thereof. Nevertheless, you should be consistent in your naming patterns. If you have files named robert-smith.html davisGeorge.html and SCHUMANcharles.html you'll drive yourself nutty when trying to remember how the link to the file should be written. I settled on upper case letters when a file name is segmented, e.g. davisGeorgeH.html and if I have a photo of George and his wife, it would be davisGeorgeH_Mary.jpg (I use underscore instead of the prohibited ampersand (&). Other George Davis files or photos might be davisGeorgeH-children.html davisGeorgeH-home.jpg davisGeorgeH-parents.jpg or davisGeorgeH_Parents.jpg My system means that related files sort together in a directory and makes them easier (for me) to find if changes are necessary. 3. Stan, Folder set-up on your harddrive should be: My Documents ---My Webs (with space) -----family (all these directories in lowercase) -----genealogy -----history -----misc -----(and any other category/directory, like school-alumni) IF you intend to only use one "website", just make that one directory/website name under My Webs. When you upload/FTP, Frontpage and Rootsweb "check" folders/directories against each other. So let's say you intend to use Rootsweb's "genealogy" category/folder/website, but under My Webs you make directory called "My Family" as your "web site folder", it won't match what Rootsweb expects to see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FTP_server_return_codes http://www.theegglestongroup.com/writing/ftp_error_codes.php 533 is "illegal file name" One thing I found was sometimes I downloaded a zip file right into My Webs>genealogy> before I unzipped it... then I forgot I had a zip file in my web directory. So look at ALL folder names first, and open each folder to look at file extensions. Note: you should use html OR htm Look for anything NOT htm, html, or jpg, gif. Temporarily move any odd-extensions to a different folder...when you try uploading, those won't be in the way anymore. Second, look at filenames... No MiXeD Case all_lowercase with_underscore-or-hyphen = OK NO SPACES -- even filename space dot extension (I used to get an extra space before the dot)... or "mySPACEfamily.htm" (When I was brand new, one time I had to temporarily move ALL files to a temp folder so I could find the problem... For your whole folder/web, then "move" everything out to a temp folder except index.htm or html ... and upload. Add one more file back...upload... etc. It took me a long while (an hour) before upload failed and I found the offensive file.) OR rather than any of the above... use Filezilla to upload--- you'll see what gets rejected. You can go back to using Frontpage to upload after that. 3. Hi Stan, Make sure that all your files that you want to upload are in lower case. You also need to upload all the images so they display on you pages. There are some easy to follow instructions to set-up your FrontPage FTP (File Transfer Protocol) at this URL: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~zuber/gentips/newsite/index.htm Scroll down on the page until you see the link to "Publishing" and click on it. First, make sure you have actually created a site in FrontPage and not jst a collection of folders and images. http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/creating-a-frontpage-web.htm Once you are ready to publish check and make sure that your Remote website properties make sure that you have specified the correct directory - genealogy_html or which ever one you are going to use. Once you connect, you should see the files in YOUR WEBSITE folder on the left and the files in the remote location on the right. If what you see is the list of folders/directories genealogy_html etc, then the remote publishing is not set up correctly. You can also highlight one file or folder and use the arrow keys located in the middle of the publishing panel to push the file/folder over. Make sure you are NOT trying to publish file types that are not allowed such as zip files. pat

You didn't mention the name of the WYSIWYG editor that you are currently using. However, those editors will have a way of allowing you to edit the HTML code that is created. If you want to insert a background image to cover the whole of your page, then it is best to select (from 1,000's available on the web) one that has been designed to be seamlessly repeating. There essentially three ways of coding to insert a background image, and they all involve 'styles'. The simplist method is to locate the <body> tag in your page and insert the following code:- <body style="background-image:#fff url('bg-image.jpg')"> NOTE: The default rendering is for the image to repeat - horizontally and vertically. If you only want to display the image once, then the url is followed by a 'space' and 'no-repeat',e.g. <body style="background-image:#fff url('bg-image.jpg') no-repeat"> The second method uses an embedded Cascading StyleSheet in the <head> section of your page:- <head> <style> body { background-image:#fff url('bg-image.jpg'); } </style> </head> While the third method uses a linked stylesheet:- <head> <link rel="stylesheet" href="mystyles.css"> </head> Where the the style shown in the previous example (without the <style></style> tags) is saved in your text editor as "yourfilename.css" I suggest you start by using the first method, and once you have that up and running, experimentation with the other methods can be done.
