    3. Hi, I am using Desktop Author for my genealogy because I can add multimedia. It also works for creating photo albums. It is flip-page and is customisable and has a search option when selected in preferences. No connection to DTA, other than a user. :-) rog AbA -----Original Message----- From: freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freepages-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jim Slade Sent: 05 June 2013 21:55 To: freepages-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FreeHelp] best method to display yearbook on website? Pat and James, Thanks for the great examples. 3. Jim, I have scanned and posted many school yearbooks on two of my websites. Very labour-intensive, but worth the effort. 3. If you have acrobat pro you can combine any number of images into one PDF file and then process the OCR to get a text searchable document. I believe the PDF file is easier to view given all the many options adobe reader has. Our website maintains about 10,000 yearbooks so I have tried many different options. Hopefully one day we will have the funds to get most of these digitized. At that time we'll probably go with PDFs. Right now I currently upload the individual images and then view them. Joomla requires a database backend, so this is not an option on the freepages, but only mentioned for example. It could be done other ways without a database. Here is an example of individual pics from a yearbook. This yearbook was unique in that the yearbook was a picture album with each student's photo on a page. I should include a pic of the album itself :-) http://www.itsallaboutfamily.com/j16/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1039:chadron-hs-class-of-1939&catid=1240:chadron-hs Donna On Thu, Jun 6, 2013 at 8:00 PM, Jim Slade <slade33@gmail.com> wrote: > Ralph, my thought on putting the images in Word first was so I could get > all the images into one PDF document, in order, like a book, rather than > a PDF for each image. 3. Ralph, my thought on putting the images in Word first was so I could get all the images into one PDF document, in order, like a book, rather than a PDF for each image. 3. HI So instead of people crazy with all my questions. I turned and asked a friend about websites and how to and all that. She let me know she has never done web sites. But she is proficient with paint shop pro. She is very creative. So she took my ideas and put them into her program and did me some drafts of what I wanted on my page. She said she can make buttons and some design items. So with that in mind and after looking at what she did some questions come to mind. I have gone back and re read the agree policy for having a web site. Maybe I dont understand some things. How much space do I have? How many pages am I allowed ? and How many can be branched off from one? Thank you Stan

    3. Afternoon group. I find the yearbook conversation interesting. I was wondering how to get my father's WWII 1945 patalon book on line. Originally I had scanned his company. Then edited each down to each person then I uploaded them onto Ancestry.com. I was in hopes to connect. I was left my father's foot locker. There is pictures of people I do not know who they are so I wanted to add a page to hopefully allow others to view them. When i finally get my tree up can I also add these pages of this book and those photos? But while mentioning scripting languages, Javascript ( a clientside executable language ) is used by a good number of users on Freepages, and camelizing is used extensively within it. Notwithstanding, I always create filenames for such scripts in the lower-case with hyphens where required. I have no problem with anyone creating filenames using the lower/upper-case differential as it suits them. My only concern is that users creating those filenames within the Windows O/S environment can and will overwrite existing filenames which have the same alphabetical/numerical format except for a camelized variable. For that reason my stated preference is for lower-case naming. Barry

I know I didn't start off doing it that way, but experience changed my habits. The mixed lower-upper case is also known in some web languages (e.g. Ruby - a Perl inspired language) as lowerCamelized or UpperCamelized. I prefer to keep camelizing for definition when writing scripts. Scripting languages differentiate between upper and lower case, as does the Rootsweb/Ancestry Apache server when parsing URLs and commands. The safe way is to adopt the lower-case format for HTML file naming, thereby ensuring compatibility with the Windows O/S (which treats lower/upper-case file naming as being the same file) and your remote host - the Apache server. Barry, you and your expertise in so many subjects are an enormous asset to the Freepages-Help list and its members; but I have to ask how many members of this list are or will likely be writing perl based (or any) scripting language? If they are not writing scripts, are mixed case file names still an issue; or is lower case simply a reasonable habit for someone who consistently writes perl programming? If user generated scripts of any kind, including Perl, are not allowed on the server, and Randy (the last I heard) prefers C++; and the Apache (unix) servers at RW recognize upper and lower case differentials in file names, why not use them? For example on my USGenWeb sites, I have a cemeteries folder with html pages for each cemetery AND an images directory for each cemetery. I find it easier to have a list of all the html cemetery indexes at the top level of my cemeteries directory. The images folders are named with my personal upper case convention, e.g imagesAllen imagesChapelHill imagesDeerfield etc. That way, if there is a Robert Smith buried in more than one cemetery, I have the image of his tombstone in the correct images subdirectory. OTOH, I might have only a handful of photos accompanying biographies, so I might not set up a separate images folder in the biographies directory. People are different. We each solve questions/problem in a way with which we are comfortable. Sites are different too. What works for one might not work for another. When it comes to organizing and naming conventions, there is no one "right" way. Choose what is comfortable, and as you said -- be consistent <g> Pat A.
