I recently downloaded Win SCP to upload my web pages to freepages. For the host name I input users.freepages.rootsweb.com. I input my user name and password and attempt to login. Win SCP tries to login, but after several seconds comes back with an error message "network error, connection timed out". I am using the correct host name? Is anyone familiar with Win SCP? Tommy R. I've had a look at what I can see of the website directory structure, and find that you do have a directory named "_themes" loaded, so you need to either FTP your folder "compass" and its contents into the "_themes" directory, or if you using the freepages file manager, open the website "_themes" directory and create a new directory named "compass" within it. There will now be 2 sub-directories; the other being "edge" which is already there. Now load the "background_compass.gif" file to the "compass" directory. Barry

To use a fixed size to design a web page is to assume most of your visitors are using a desktop computer to browse and research. While it is difficult to draw a page for every screen and browser (www.screenresolution.org tracks over 4000 different screen resolutions), there is an increasing number of people who use strictly mobile devices for browsing. Using a flexible design, and alt tags help keep your pages accessible to a wider group of devices. -----Original Message----- Message: 1 Date: Sat, 8 Jun 2013 10:47:49 -0400 From: Stan Wojcieh <stanwojcieh@gmail.com> Subject: [FreeHelp] page size To: freepages-help <freepages-help@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <CAEXQ3T0cCrp0g+S09M_oh2eeAD29FaZM8ENFFLHhCVzC-ggfnw@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 HI Sorry to be buggy on the weekend but if some one could please tell me what size my web site pages should. My crafty person is asking. So that she can design according to the page size. I know down at the bottom of the page on FP it gives you a selection. Right now its set for 1128x312. Then my next question is. When I change the size will this adjust what I have already made? Many Thanks ------------------------------
"When I change the size will this adjust what I have already made?" Easiest answer: Make several copies of your page. Rename one with the letters ORIG at end, that's your original file. Rename another with TEST at end. Using TEST, change the size setting and see what happens. If it screws up the page, no problem...Reset to your old setting on TEST and see what happens. You can't screw up the original but will answer your questions. Copy back in your ORIG, rename it back to the name you had before. Google web page sizes http://www.iteracy.com/resources/build-a-better-website/size-and-layout-of-a-web-page/ "The average size of these web pages is around 960 pixels, which is what you would expect as the most screen resolutions are 1024x768 or larger. W3Schools data from January 2011 found that around 1.1% of users had a screen smaller than this, a number which will continue to decrease." https://forums.digitalpoint.com/threads/standard-webpage-size-web-2-0.1685526/ "The standard width for a website should be 960px unless you have a flow style layout" "The standard width for a website should be 960px unless you have a flow style layout Which is the only type of layout worth doing since given the wide range of screen resolutions that are out there. Fixed width is ALWAYS a miserable /FAIL/ at web design... and it's not like fluid is any harder (Hell, I find it SIMPLER since you don't have to go nuts declaring widths on EVERYTHING)" "I would say that the majority of users now have a screen res of atleast 1024x768. Which you would probably be designing using the 960 based grid, if you design off a grid that is." http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/best-screen-size/ At the bottom it says: "It’s impossible to design a website to look the same in every browser, platform and screen resolution, so don’t bother trying. Instead, use a fluid, layout without tables for your design, with % widths that expand and contract to fit a visitors browser setting. Consider – design for 1024×768 setting and ensure it contracts properly, or ‘transforms gracefully’, to the 800×600 setting." When I change the size will this adjust what I have >already made? that a search engine can read. ============== One thing I would caution you against is not to have a website that is all images with no actual content Search engines can NOT read text that is an image. The width of your page is specified in the actual html or hopefully within the style sheet. And when finished you should view your page in more than just your default browser. pat Working With Rootsweb FreePages Accounts EBook http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gearyfamily/rootsweb-freepages-ebook.html Planning a Genealogy Website EBook 2nd Edition http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/genealogy-website-ebook.html
Text will generally flow to fill whatever space is available on the screen, unless you specify a width for the whole page in the HTML. It's graphics that are the biggest issue on web pages. Big graphics are usually large in terms of bytes. Large graphics take a long time to load. IF someone has a slower connection it can a a REALLY LONG TIME to load. There are even a few instances where the viewer will be limited in terms of how much they can download in a certain period of time. [ viewing web pages means the viewer has to download all the data on the page to their computer. ] If that limit is exceeded it can cost more money or they throttle down the viewers speed to less than mediocre dial-up speeds. The best way to look at it is to be thoughtful to your visitors. Someone else will have to address any Front Page specific questions. I've never used it and have no idea how it works. The following tutorial by Pat Geary will help get you up and running with one. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/create-rootsweb-guestbook.html Barry
With recent interest to present a yearbook of photos (my mother, class of '26), my ideas leaned toward Pat's, using names as a link to the image. Another used a list of names, and a link to the entire page of photos. Less labor intensive than individual photos. Talk of converting the book to a PDF document so the "casual visitor could browse" would be of the least interest to me. I want to find a specific name, not wander an entire book. Simple HTML text with a jpg image seems easier. Just my opinion.
