When I look at what they told me to copy and paste, following the The gb = is the number 10911. What relevance does that have? Should I replace it with the name of my guestbook website. I really do no know why I am having so much trouble with this! Here is the code that was on the page that they told me to copy and paste relative to Pat Geary's red highlighted area on her instgruction page. <a href="http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_guest book.cgi?gb=10911&action=view"> <img src="view.gif" border=0></a> Also where do I paste it? On a page by itself? Or On the actual Index page? Sorry for appearing so dense here, I just can't understand what to do. Barbara

    3. In names like McKinney the small "c" is traditionally at the top of the line. Using the "sup" tag places it partially above the line of text. Is there some way to move it to the top of the line without going above? -- “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein "A great moral force is a bayonet on a gun and a web-belt full of cartridges." -Colonel John S. If you have placed it into another directory, the link above on your index.htm page should be changed to take account of that fact, e.g. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine/new-directory/Guest Book.htm I have also found that you appear to have created a Xenu sitemap / Google sitemap, and broken links to those also show up when scanning your site. One word of caution when using the Xenu Sleuth utility; it can only follow links, and will not find those files that have become "orphaned", i.e. without links. Also, when naming your files, it is best practice to avoid using spaces as they show up as %20, and don't aid in the readability at all. I suggest you resort to standardizing your naming conventions to either of the following:- (a) guest-book.htm (b) guest_book.htm (c) GuestBook.htm If you have had difficulty with creating the guestbook page, I suggest if you haven't already done so to take a look at Pat Geary's comprehensive description at:- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/create-rootsweb-guestbook.html Barry

    3. Barbara, I'm not sure where you got this URL?? < http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine/index%20with%20gue stbook_files/filelist.xml > The link to your Guestbook is put on your index.html page And inside the code for the index.html page you put the coding. So I originally named my guestbook page --the file--- as this:: life_gb_march-16-2008.htm<http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/life_gb_march-16-2008.htm> in my "family" RW category/directory. which becomes: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/life_gb_march-16-2008.htm The above has the boxes where people can "Sign", e.g. enter the items, in the boxes I designated. If I'm not mistaken, RW then assigns the URL to view the guestbook, so for mine, that is http://resources.rootsweb.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_guestbook.cgi?gb=6338&action=view So the index page ... and the Guestbook Sign and Guestbook View... are 3 separate web pages... and you actually make 2 of those pages to initiate the View Page that RW makes. Is that how you made your Guestbook? Judy On Fri, Jun 28, 2013 at 3:32 PM, Barbara F Cozine <bfcozine@ptd.net> wrote: > I used Rootsweb to create a guest book. Note:: We use the term "directory" on the server, and "folder" on your computer. The genealogy_html directory is the one you are currently using and is represented as:- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine in the URL used to address it. Likewise, all the other folders are additional root level directories that you may use as you see fit, and can be addressed in the same manner. The only difference is that the misc_html directory is the default directory, and the following URL will address it:- http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine or http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine I think it would be a good idea to use a FTP utility to access the files on the server, as you can configure the FTP to go directly to a directory of your choice, and match it with the same folder on your computer. That way, confusion is avoided. Barry

    3. Everything others said is correct, but... no account should have 2 of any of the basic RW categories/directories/webspaces. So having 2 of Folklore_html is a problem. As an aside, other than as a 'top folder' on your computer, you should not use "same-name_html" as a folder name when it is the same as the online directory. For example, RW offers "history_html" as a directory/category/web space, but you shouldn't make "history_html" on your computer as that web category or under that web as a sub folder. On my computer, I might have My Webs ----history ---- This folder will "match" the online directory "history_html" sub folder _includes (with a _ before it) ---sub folder images ---sub folder families -----------sub sub folder mcgary -----------sub sub folder mcdermott --sub folder maps But it'd be really confusing to have this... My Webs ---history -- matches "history_html" directory online --sub folder images -- sub folder history --- Not good in the "history_html" web. Instead, name this folder "historical" or even "hx" to keep it clear for yourself and visitors. 3. Hi Barbara, If I understood right, these are duplicates of the actual website, correct, that the former webmaster uploaded? Can you see if they are actually under the parent which is _genealogy (for that web / category you're using). If they appear "above" the parent, OR if below but too stubborn to delete, contact the Help Desk and ask if they can assist you. By any chance, if they are duplicates the old webmaster uploaded, can you re-name them? then delete? Or are they just 'dead'? Whichever, the Help Desk should be able to help. Nostalgia_html, religions_html, school-alumni_html And in the Genealogy folder Are the ones I use, including another Folklore_html. My reason for wanting to remove the first ones above is because there are two Folklore_html folders. I was getting confused between the two Folklores and different levels. If I could just rename the one in the first level. I would be fine. Barbara

    3. Judy, I followed all of what you shared. I copied the folders to another location before doing anything with file manager. All the folders were empty. When I went back to File Manager and tried to delete them I could not. File Manager would only allow me to do actions with the Folders and Files in Genealogy and sub directories of Genealogy. These are all fine and I do not need to do anything with any of them. The ones I want to delete/rename are at the entry level with the Geneaology folder. My Lite Core FTP is similar to the program that you mention. It does have a feature to rename and delete but it would not work with these empty folders. I will try the program that you suggest. 3. Could you please give us the names of the folders you wish to delete? I have a feeling your wishing to delete "folders" that cannot be deleted. Any folder with a "_html" in it is not deletable. On 06/26/2013 06:58 PM, Barbara F Cozine wrote: > Judy, > > > > I followed all of what you shared. 3. Hi Barbara, I took over 2 sites and integrated the pages into my site... so I know how confusing the tasks can be. There are ways to delete files/folders. BUT, I strongly urge you to FIRST download it ALL to your computer. Why? 1. "Just in case." 2. Just to be extra extra safe until you sort out for sure what you want/need. The easiest way to download ALL of it is to use Filezilla. Easy to set up. Pat G I think had an E-book about it. WITH FILEZILLA Connect to the server. The LEFT side shows YOUR Computer's Files ---so be careful ! The RIGHT shows parent directory - genealogy - the files/folders already online. To DOWNLOAD, you would highlight the files/folders on the RIGHT... If you right-click it will show "Upload" or "Download". You can also get to the same actions on the menu bar in Filezilla. (I think you can also delete from your online web using Filezilla. But you might want to use File Manager instead. ) So after downloading it all to your computer.... If you know how to get to Rootsweb's "File Manager (File Man), all you need to do is go to the page showing those files/folders. BUT you might want to experiment first. Find a small image file on your computer---upload it to the site. Refresh your screen-- click F5. Now using the instructions below, delete that small image file. Next, make a TEST folder (pr some weird name that stands out). After it is made, hit F5 to see it in the list. Click on TEST folder to open the folder. Now re-upload that small image... hit F5 again to refresh... highlight the radio button (see below)... and go down the page to 'delete' that image. Hit F5.... TEST folder will now be empty. Click the top-level 'folder', so you're back in the main folder (web) "genealogy" ... Now highlight the radio button next to your TEST folder--- go down the page to where it says Delete. F5 again (you always must do F5 in Fileman to see your changes. So on the duplicate files/folders, it's the same thing.... Click the radio button beside the item. Go down the page and look for Delete this File/Folder. ***** This action cannot be reversed. It will ask if you are sure... if so, click OK and poof--it's gone. Repeat for each file or folder you want to delete. Note: You can 'play' as much as you want with uploading single items and deleting... or with making/deleting test folders. I did this when I was new, so I could see how File Manager works and get over my fear of messing it all up. Just as an FYI.... it is easy to upload wrongly and be "above" the parent directory... or to duplicate existing files/folders. I think when I was new I had to ask the Help Desk to help me delete what I uploaded outside of my "web". I made a big mess--LOL! No matter how many times you visit your own site, the counter will not change until someone with a different IP address visits the site. After a visit from a different IP address, you will be counted again -- but only once -- until another different IP address visits the site. Bottom line -- you can not run up your own visitor count by repeat visits. Pat A.
