A webmaking program should not over-write or remove web page files when a user uploads a new file with a different name. So, index.html only gets over-written if it is different in size or content from the previous index.html If ancestry's old program is removing or overwriting files when you don't want it to do that, it would be more than enough reason for me to switch programs asap. 3. Judy, I know you and others on this list learned the hard way, that a little time spent mastering the basics of HTML will save you many grey/gray hairs in the longer term. As a recent example, the basic index.htm page generated by MS Word and posted at:- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cozine/ comprised 30KB of code, and that is excluding the Rootsweb Banner code. The same page in HTML5 is a 20th of the size, coming in at 1.5KB. It really is a "no brainer". You are the only person who can fix the broken links on your site. In the case of your Guest Book, if you go to File Manager, enter your site by selecting the Genealogy community and click on the Enter File Manager button. You will be presented with a list of files in your Root Directory. At the top of that list will appear any sub-directories (they will appear as links) and to find your missing Guest%20Book.htm file, (a) select the radio button to the left of the first one (b) click on the link to the directory, and its contents will be listed. (c) if there are further subdirectories listed, repeat (a) and (b). (d) to get back to the root directory, click the Up One Level link until you get there. Now repeat the above on any other directories/sub-directories linked from the root directory. If the Guest%20Book.htm file is found, make note of the directory it is in with reference to the root directory and change you link on the index.htm page to reflect that, e.g. My Guest Book The organization of you computer Folders and website Directories is best kept "relative", i.e. if on your computer the Cozine website folder contains your index.htm file and your Guest%20Book.htm file is located in the sub-folder guestbook, then the link on your computer should appear as:- My Guest Book Create the same sub-directory on the FreePages website and load the Guest%20Book.htm file to it. Now upload the changed index.htm file to your root directory and the link will work. P.S. Those %20 characters represent a space, and I wrote about that yesterday. Barry

    3. Barbara, I found your guestbook. It is located at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine/Guest%20Book/BEGIN%20GUESTBOOK.htm However, you have uploaded the page as code instead of a web page. To change that, you need to paste the guestbook code you were given into the "source" for the web page. 1) Open your text editor. I assume you are using Notepad. 2) Type, or copy and paste, the following: <.html> <.head> <.body background="images/BROWN1.JPG"> ***** Paste the guestbook code you were given here ***** <.body> <.html> 3) Save as: guestbook.html 4) Upload to the subdirectory "Guest Book" 5) On your index page, change the link to <.a href="Guest%20Book"/guestbook.html"> and upload your revised index. I have used leading dots in the html tags to keep email readers from executing the code. You will need to remove them when creating the code for your web page. Pat A. I have just put together a rough example at:- http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bristowe/test/gaelic-mc.html ... and that example allows you to try 3 separate fonts and sizes. To save mark-up, I've used a very under utilized <s> tag in lieu of the tag, and you will be able to see for your self the styles used. Barry

    3. Also where do I paste it? On a page by itself? Yep, yep. The "sign Guestbook" must be a page/file you create, just like any other web page. Except, on this page, you will make "a form" using text boxes. Each text box is up to you. As an example for Visitors: Your Name: Box Your email: Box Your Primary Surname: Box Your Family Surnames: Box Your Research Concern: Box Your memories about xxxx: Box Comments: Box Each "text box" must be given a size/shape -- you enter numbers into the coding to make a tall-wide box, or a short one line box. This is your "guestbook.html" page. The "guestbook.html" page is "linked" to your index.html page. BUT it must also be identified in your "guestbook code". The "guestbook.html" name goes in one spot... the number assigned to you goes in the line that says resources at rootsweb. Go line by line in the guestbook CODE, the one that has form method at the top. Judy

    1. Re: [FreeHelp] GUEST BOOK
    2. JFlorian
    3. First, creation of forms trips everyone up in the beginning. Don't think you can't do it--- it's just new info to learn. Second, you wrote: "The directory that the guestbook is in is correct when compared with all the other items on my index" This is great IF all the other items are in the SAME Sub-folder. If you have the other items loose under "genealogy" then that isn't in a sub-folder. It would be easier if you have the guestbook.html page "loose" under the genealogy folder, like the index.html page must be -- NOT in a folder. Then you don't have to worry about how many directories you need, each with a / slash before and after. When writing a relative (short) link by hand, you must include the right number of /directory/directory/before the web file...so it's very easy to mess it up. I used to sit taking out ../../ until I thought I'd cry, just trying to get the right number of .../directory/ in a link. (I'd wonder, is it 2 of these .../.../... or 3 of these .../.../.../ to get to the right directory!) Go back to the beginning and go step by step. Rename your guestbook with no spaces in the name, get rid of that percent20percent. (it's much better without spaces in file names). Next... Look at the code given for "the guestbook"... make the Guestbook page. Next, link from your index page to the guestbook.html page. Remember, you need a Sign Link and a View Link on your Index page, if you want people to Sign ... and View (one without the other doesn't do much good...giggle). To give you an example of link coding for this, on my index page I put my links in a table... (and minus any dots you see in this) align="center"><...a href="../life_gb_march-16-2008.htm" target="_blank"><....font size="2">SIGN "Life in Washington Co PA" Guestbook
<....a target="_blank" href=" http://resources.rootsweb.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_guestbook.cgi?gb=FOUR-DIGIT-NUMBER&action=view"><....font size="2">VIEW GUESTBOOK
NOTE: "Life in Washington Co PA" is what I named the gb ON the Guestbook Sign page as a title. Do you see this part? a href="../life_gb_march-16-2008.htm" target= See how it has href=".../filename.html" That is where your file name for Signing Guestbook will go -- the page with your boxes. See where it says a target="_blank" href="with a http web address to resources at rootsweb" --- that is RW's place to View the guestbook. (If you want to see the entire code for mine, I can send it separate. I'm just showing pieces below.) NOW... on your page for Sign Guestbook -- the actual file, the code should start with (IGNORE DOTS) <....a name="guestbook"> <....form method=POST action=" http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_guestbook.cgi?gb=FOUR-DIGIT-NUMBER&action=submit "> Does your form method line look like that? But with your number in the line where it says Four-Digit-Number. Your next lines should say <....INPUT TYPE=text name= This is where you assign names for the boxes for info. Like if you want a visitor to give their name, your Input name would be Name: For Surnames the Input name is Surnames. I have some inputs I named "personal1" "personal2" "personal13" for longer text titles, like: for, as an example, "What is your favorite area/town in the County?" After all your boxes are finished, the last line of the code looks like this: Type "End": <....INPUT TYPE=text name="End" size=28> The problem is undoubtedly an error where you put the guestbook name in the coding, or in how you linked from Index to your Sign guestbook file. The other three places in red are where you insert the questions you want to ask your viewer. I think that I did not understand the "saving" instructions correctly. I added the link to the guest book web page to my Index file. I saved the Guest Book into a sub Folder and uploaded it to a sub directory. The link is broken and will not work. When I open the "Guest Book Html" it does not open up like a web page but opens as page full of text. Thus I believe the problem is with the Guest Book Web page. I ran Xena and it said "http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine/index%20with%20gue stbook_files/filelist.xml" not found. So I originally named my guestbook page --the file--- as this:: life_gb_march-16-2008.htm<http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~flo rian/life_gb_march-16-2008.htm> in my "family" RW category/directory. which becomes: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~florian/life_gb_march-16-2008 .htm The above has the boxes where people can "Sign", e.g. enter the items, in the boxes I designated. If I'm not mistaken, RW then assigns the URL to view the guestbook, so for mine, that is http://resources.rootsweb.com/~guestbook/cgi-bin/public_guestbook.cgi?gb=633 8&action=view So the index page ... and the Guestbook Sign and Guestbook View... are 3 separate web pages... and you actually make 2 of those pages to initiate the View Page that RW makes. Is that how you made your Guestbook? Judy On Fri, Jun 28, 2013 at 3:32 PM, Barbara F Cozine <bfcozine@ptd.net> wrote: > I used Rootsweb to create a guest book. If you have placed it into another directory, the link above on your index.htm page should be changed to take account of that fact, e.g. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cozine/new-directory/Guest Book.htm I have also found that you appear to have created a Xenu sitemap / Google sitemap, and broken links to those also show up when scanning your site. One word of caution when using the Xenu Sleuth utility; it can only follow links, and will not find those files that have become "orphaned", i.e. without links. Also, when naming your files, it is best practice to avoid using spaces as they show up as %20, and don't aid in the readability at all. I suggest you resort to standardizing your naming conventions to either of the following:- (a) guest-book.htm (b) guest_book.htm (c) GuestBook.htm If you have had difficulty with creating the guestbook page, I suggest if you haven't already done so to take a look at Pat Geary's comprehensive description at:- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/create-rootsweb-guestbo ok.html Barry ------------------------------ To contact the FREEPAGES-HELP list administrator, send an email to FREEPAGES-HELP-admin@rootsweb.com.
