Hi Jeanne, On your submit under your form, it goes to an oops page on RW. The two RW banners there are squished to the top. On your page for the guestbook, make sure it has its closing body / closing html in the right places, to push the bottom RW banner to the bottom. Jeanne, w3 validator has become my friend lately, e.g. I've actually understood what it said LOL. When it didn't make sense, I looked down to the "tidy" section it gives, and compared its output with my and Frontpage2000 code. Have you tried running the page through the validator? Webmaking sure is maddening at times. Judy
It is a waste of time to disable right click. You still can see the source code if you click view/source. You are right about the guestbook image, it needs to be uploaded. Also like you said, the links don't work. That is just my two cents worth. Have a nice day and a great Holiday weekend. I'm sorry I went to be on you last night. I was bone tired. When I stole your page last night, for testing purposes only, the graphics were taken as HTML pages rather than the jpg, gif or whatever. When I went back and "saved" the graphics individually they were right and I could get them to show in Firefox, except fr the ship one. That one would not save because Firefox said there was something wrong with the format. Some fault in how it was done I suppose. I don't have IE readily available because I use Linux but another browser I have, Rekonq [ don't ask ], shows everything just fine. I have found over the years that in some ways Firefox is less fault tolerant that some of the others. I do like the current background much better than the valley one from yesterday. The page looks very classy. Rawls Family asked about Open Office problems with RTD files produced by PAF5, specifically how to get PAF to make a PDF file without going through OO. We have to remember that PAF5 is way long in the tooth. Back when it was written, things were done differently than now. Acrobat (PDF) files were then made by installing Acrobat as a "printer" (a device driver) and selecting it from the print menu. So, we didn't "save as" PDF; we "printed" to PDF. So, go into your control panel and see if you can install Acrobat as a printer. When selected from the Print menu, it will make a PDF file of your report directly from PAF. BTW, there is no update to version 5 of PAF, which was downloadable for free from FamilySearch.org. There's a whole new application licensed by the LDS called Ancestry Quest. -rt_/)

Hi Ralph, Your writing, as always, is excellent. You provided clear 'steps' . I had just told Barry, off-list, that I was working on simply getting the pages into order and linked, and figuring out just how to 'switch' from tier to tier (level to level). As everyone knows, making lists or outlines in MS Word is fairly easy-- Enter, Tab makes an indented 3rd tier in a List. But it isn't like that in Frontpage2000. My biggest problem so far is going from say a 3rd level/tier back to Level 1 or 2 (e.g. going back "out" after being in an indented level). Obviously, once I get a level to work, I can repeat it, but making the switches back "out" is hardest. As to image on a UL from CSS, I like it when used sparingly as I have on some pages. But on the site map, an image becomes hideous and distracting. Right now, it doesn't stop rendering -- it still picks up the Ext CSS even though Barry's script should override it. But as I told Barry, I'll work on the actual list first, and worry about the style or CSS and the image later. One thing that I still question -- Just how far should a site map go? Xenu gave an entire "every page" listing for a site map. I like Pat G's Site Map, so links go from Map to another page. As an example, let's say I have 20 directories in one site and each has an "index.html" with all the pages listed in that directory. Should the Site Map just have Name of This Directory linked to that directory's index.html OR should the Map have listed a couple actual pages for each directory? In just one directory, I might have upwards of 50 pages (ex. cemeteries). To put ALL that on a site Map gets unwieldy... kind of like listing every page in a book. Is there any standard solution? I would like to add $0.02 into the discussion. Gramps is an absolutely fabulous program. It has features that almost no other program has unless they are extremely expensive. BUT, it has a dark side also. If you have more than one computer, a laptop, or small portable computer of any type, that you usually take to the library or on research trips the come home and "share" the database with your desktop, you can't do that with Gramps. [ Well, you kinda can IF both versions are EXACTLY the same version on both machines or you export your portable database and then import into Gramps. ] If you use Gramps to generate a website for, say, Freepages, it is not really human editable. If you nee to make any changes, update a person, you have to generate a completely new site. I used Gramps for a few years and finally decided that it was way to complicated and powerful for my needs and I came back to PAF [ and have been playing with Ancestral Quest lately ]. I use something called Dropbox to store my PAF database and share it between all my computers. [ something like five computers and one database. ] When I come home from the library and connect my laptop/netbook to the home network, or even an internet connection from a hotel when away from home, the database automatically updates on ALL my computers, or the next time the computer is turned on and connected to the internet. The question wasn't a Freepages question, so my apologies to the list for answering. But the answer may be of interest to a number of you, because it relates to PDFs from any application. What I do, and find easy, is to use the free Primo PDF software. This installs a "virtual printer", which ANY program, including PAF, thinks is a physical printer --- but turns out PDF files instead of printed pages. I do it all the time with PAF. I don't check "Print to file". Instead, I just go to the Control Panel for printers, and designate the Primo printer (which appears along with the physical printers) as the default. PAF sends the report to Primo which then asks me to select a file name and location. It also pops the report on the screen with an Adobe reader, which I usually just close without reading. When I'm finished with producing PAF reports, I then make my "real" printer the default, and that's it. I've e-mailed the PDFs from PAF to lots of people, and no complaints so far. But because GRAMPS offers so much more flexibility than PAF --- and is free too --- I plan to switch to GRAMPS, even though it has a steeper and longer learning curve. In addition to much more flexibility about the relationship between the two parents of a child, or recording same sex couples, GRAMPS has a "real" database, not a proprietary file management system as most genealogy packages do. (BTW, Primo isn't the only package, others offer such functionality too.) Dear Judy, Let's go back to Barry's principle: 'You really need some basic nested list mark-up to help you understand the associated CSS. A small case of "don't leap off the cliff before you've learnt to fly!"' I fear you may be getting too far ahead of yourself. I'd recommend this step-by-step approach: 1. Crawl: Build a simple nested list in HTML. Start with no styling changes whatsoever; use HTML defaults. (This means NO external or internal CSS style sheets or inline styling.) Simplify; don't try to do it with the whole site map list. See how that works for you and validate. If OK, implement nested lists throughout the site map page without special styling. 2. Stand: Bring in your site-wide external style sheet. Again, see how it looks and validate. 3. Walk: Start to make some styling changes (margins, padding, etc.) with an internal style sheet in the doc head. Do one at a time to see the effect of each. Keep what works; discard what doesn't. 4. Run: Experiment with list style types (discs, circles, squares, etc.) These are governed by list-style-type statements in the CSS. 5. Fly: Substituting graphic images as list item markers is, IMO, an advanced technique. Save it for the final experiment. Basics: * Both internal and external style sheets are handled in the doc head between <.head> and
, above the <.body> statement. A style is first created in the head and then used in the body. ("Inline styling" is placed within an individual HTML element.) Styling is not technically a "script"; it usually has little viewer input. * Internal style sheets are enclosed by the <.style> and statements in the doc head. * External style sheets are called by statements in the doc head like <.link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="misc-web.css"> <.link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="misc-web2.css"> You may have multiple external style sheets; just call them. * The closest CSS takes priority: Inline styling gets highest priority; Internal style sheet next; then External style sheet. * A div is defined by a leading #, e.g, #div1; more styling options, but use limited to once per page. * A class is defined by a leading dot, e.g., .class1; can be reused many times. * HTML elements are defined when named. Re: 'How do I tell the Site Page special script "don't use any UL image here, override the External CSS"?' Actually, it's more a matter of "turning on" than "turning off". With Pat's CSS solution, any list item within the "sitemap" div will have a graphic. UNLESS, your create a class in the style sheet (e.g., ul .no-img {list-style-image: none; /* comment: removes image /* list-style-type: square; } /* comment: adds symbol /* Then, turn on no-img with HTML code: <.ul class="no-img"> BUT the simplest way -- if you don't want ANY images -- is to remove (or comment out) the list-style-image statements in the CSS. -rt_/)
I know nothing about PAF. But an alternative to MS Word is "AbiWord" < http://www.abisource.com/ > It will even open docx files for people who have an old Word version (which cannot open docx files). Just right click a File and select Open With to choose AbiWord. Or set AbiWord as your word processor. It might be worth trying Abi -- it's free and might work for your needs? Judy
Judy, The problems re the validator can be fixed. The list mark-up has an error (mine) where the 3rd list has been inserted. I failed to insert it into the preceding li - being too hasty [:-). Now change the styles for the 3rd UL to these:- .sitemap ul ul ul li { list-style: square; margin: 0px 0px 10px 20px; } (Note the change to the margin-left value.) Other things the Validator said relate to me using the HTML5 doctype, and you using HTML4. The above changes will get you going. Having changed computers after a crash I decided NOT to install MS Word and thought I had no problems using Open Office however I have found a problem with .RTF files. As PAF5 produces reports in this format its a major wrinkle for me. The PAF5 reports print fine and view fine in preview but when using 'print to file' in order to share such reports OO overlaps the text boxes and relationship lines, OO compatibility with RTF files is apparently a known issue so its not really an issue with PAF5, some folks have suggested using PDF files but I cannot see a way to directly produce these from PAF5. Ok, I think I did that right. Thank you. It still is picking up the swirl-image, though This website http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11759961/inline-list-style-type-not-overriding-external-style-rules says to use style="list-style-image: none; list-style-type:circle;" But when my novice eyes look at your script Barry, it looks to me like you specified "none" in the styles. So why won't it stop doing that swirl image? Q: Are each supposed to 'match' for disc, circle, square? Q: Lastly, is there an easy instruction for how to know when to "open" and to "close" the nested sections? For right now, I labeled in text each "Level" --- Level 1, Level 2, Level 3... Then I copied your section from Level 2 / Level 3 and pasted it to make another set and make the whole list longer... but I want to make sure I know when to "close" the ul / li like you did in that section. When I get more done, I'll upload the page. Thanks again, Judy

A small case of "don't leap off the cliff before you've learnt to fly!" ----------------- LOL, at least I'm taking a stab at learning more CSS! I got your script put into the page. I had to experiment where to put your (html) into the HTML page, because each place I put it in the code resulted in in being in the top section, or in the nav section. So now I got it into the "content" area Pat G specified before. I have a few questions. Though Barry's in-page style didn't have an image anywhere, the Site Map renders by picking up the image Pat G. specified before in the site's External CSS for H1, H2 for UL LISTS. How do I tell the Site Page special script "don't use any UL image here, override the External CSS"? I ran the page through w3 validator. It reports 2 errors for this. Here is the code -- I'll number only the reported lines. I only changed background color and font size. Did I mess up something in copying Barry's? Thank you Barry for the script. Thanks Ralph for the added explanation. Pat, thank you too. I'll keep what you wrote in case I chose to add the change to an external CSS. Would that go into my existing CSS, or a second CSS file?? Judy
